What makes your game "meaningful"?
The game represents the mixed feelings we all have about 'going back to how it was', and the bittersweet aftertaste of childhood rememberance, and returning to the place you grew up in. This game was our first introduction to gameboy assembly, and to working together as a team. For us its a big step in our game dev journey, and we put our hearts into it.

Did you use any third-party assets?
Music by objetdiscret, from Fabulous Classical Chiptunes. And wasmboy GameBoy Emulator Library for HTML for the browser embedding.

Congratulations on your first group project together - achievement unlocked! :D

Wow, did you really write this in assembly!? Damn, that's low level. Is there a plan to continue to use it?

The story is interesting and the design of the levels has double meaning - higher elevation and higher intensity of the emotions. That's good design!

A couple of objects in the house trigger sensitive moments from the past where the protagonist may have been motivated a certain way but hid the truth from self and the sibling. The player is presented with a choice - continue the fake narrative or face the truth. Mechanically this is simply a choice. This is a widely practiced narrative device but I believe it underutilises the unique nature of video games.

I do have one suggestion for an improvement which is really a challenge. Here is the challenge - can you present internal struggles in a way which tests the skill(s) of the player in a meaningful way?

I'm working on "solving" this problem in one way - presenting the emotional regulation. You can check out my submission to see what I mean. I hope you take up the challenge and maybe find more solutions.

Good luck!

Thank you so much!! Yes we wrote it in assembly and it was a journey haha. We're all programmers so we thought it was a good challenge and, well, it was certainly challenging. We still have a lot to learn about GameBoy assembly but we're very glad for the opportunity to begin learning the inner workings of it. Thanks for the feedback, lots to think about :)

Pretty amazing game. Loved the old school look and overall nostalgic vibes of finding items around exploration.
