Hello torture fans,

My name is Sluggy, I am a writer, music maker, photographer,  and admirer of torture. Originally my friend Sinx told me about this torture jam and I have been interested in telling a story through the medium of a video game, however, I have never made a video game before (besides messing around with rpg maker). Mainly I would like to know if there is a preferred game engine we should use, one that's good for visual novels, or a game engine that is "user friendly". I want to try to do as much of it by myself, but If you have any experience in game development, or just want to help / chat about the game please let me know and I can send you the discord link.

If you've read this far you should know at least something about the game;

"NoWheresVille" is a game about living in a city that has been twisted and distorted beyond human comprehension. Rituals and dread plague the residents, their disfigured forums of something recognizable are covered in something.... something. You are just trying to survive and check in on your friends, help them or not, they will continue to live without you. Exploring this broken city will be the only way to make sure your friends are safe, potentially finding answers to what happened here. Maybe you will be able to make this world better, don't stare though, it's considered rude.

If you want something like a visual novel, RenPy is pretty user friendly. Something like GoDot or Game Maker or even RPG Maker could also work. But also, programming can be hard work. Something that would be game adjacent is to make something like a choose your own adventure book/pdf. Could also add in sections where you make a choice and say "Roll a d20. If you get 15 or above, go to page X, otherwise go to page Y". World is ultimately your oyster.

I am a writer kind of person, so writing is the easiest thing for me to do. If you have programming experience, you might like godot. RPG Maker and Game Maker Studio have some easier code and some drag and drop options iirc, but doing that stuff makes the game run worse. This is only an issue for large games though.

Be mindful of what you can do in the time period, and play into your strengths. I've subscribed to this topic so if you want any more advice, I am happy to offer it.

 Thank you Fisher for the advice, you are very sweet <3. I really like your PDF adventure book idea, but I would like to challenge myself and learn a new medium for story telling. I know it will be tough and frustrating but in the spirit of torture I welcome the headaches! Whatever oozes out of my brain will, at the very least, make me happy I am able to share a story with everyone here :D
