Secret Garden

How did you implement your chosen Theme in your game?
The garden in Resting Cure is the world beyond the barred window: the outside, the growing, the free — everything the narrator is forbidden. It is a secret garden in the literal sense that she can only glimpse it, never reach it, and increasingly isn't sure she's seeing it truthfully. The inversion is the point. This is not a hidden refuge she discovers and escapes into; it's a freedom sealed behind bars that she watches curdle. Across the fourteen letters the garden slowly takes on the same sick yellow as the wallpaper indoors, until — at the end — the two surfaces, wall and garden, resolve into the same blank plaster. The secret garden was never a way out. It was the same room, seen through glass.

There is a second garden, too: the letters themselves. Forbidden to write, she writes anyway — a hidden, tended, secret thing she keeps alive in the dark. That's the garden the game is really about.

Did you implement any of your Theme's Bonus Challenges, and if so, which ones?
Bonus challenge — The Secret Keeper
The narrator is entrusted with a secret: her own mind, and the record of it. Under the rest cure she is forbidden to write, work, or think too much — so every letter is an act of concealment, kept from her husband, her doctor, and the housekeeper who between them manage her care. The whole game is the keeping of that secret, and the cost of keeping it. Two moments let you look back at an earlier letter and find a line that wasn't there before, in her own hand — the secret keeping, quietly, its own counsel from you.

(Not claiming Greenhouse of Horrors or Flower Power — there's no greenhouse creature and no plant mechanic; this is a text-and-sound piece.)

Love this story! Game does an excellent job of capturing the sense of isolation.
