Edit: I found the artist

Hello,I'm Deki, and I make games for fun.

A month or so ago, I participated in Godot Wild Jam #95, where the theme was "Retro." Together with two other people, we decided to make a point-and-click game because we thought it would be easy, but due to technical difficulties, we didn't finish it in time for the jam.  Now I'm left with a prototype filled with placeholder art. But I think the idea was pretty cool, so I wanted to finish it and upload it to itch.io for free once it's done.

This would be the game in a nutshell:

Gameplay:

The character has five games hidden somewhere in the apartment. Each game represents a different era of gaming:

  •     80s – Mario-like 2D platformer
  •     Late 90s – Low-poly, PS1-like adventure (but in 2D)
  •     2000s – Some racing game (because even a simple RTS is surprisingly complicated :))
  •     2010s – Maybe an FPS, or some indie gem
  •     Modern AAA era – Something kinda epic, like God of War (2018)

(Naturally, each game is quite simplified—featuring very basic 2D graphics and a single, simple mechanic—purely to represent that era of gaming, something most gamers will instantly recognize.)

The main character solves relatively simple puzzles throughout the apartment to find the games one by one. After finding one, they return to the TV and console to play it—a short 30–60 second level. Once it's beaten, the game is placed on the shelf beneath the TV.

We also came up with a basic story and a reason why the character is gathering and playing these games, but that can definitely be expanded or changed. (The main character also has a funny parrot companion that constantly talks to the player and comments on what's happening.)

Because we originally planned this game for a jam, we came up with the idea of making the mini-games simple—one mechanic, retro-themed (that was the jam theme), and in 2D pixel art. But that can also be modified.

For the main game, though, we were aiming for a non-pixel-art style—some chill 2D hand-drawn art with expressive characters.

I haven't played a lot of point-and-click games, but a few months ago I played "Deponia"(because it was given for free on steam :)), and honestly, I really liked it. I loved the humor, and especially the art—hand-drawn, expressive, colorful, and full of charm.

I'm not looking to copy Deponia's style, but that kind of relaxed, humorous adventure feeling is the direction I have in mind. (Although there are probably better examples in the genre.)

If you have ideas that fit the project better, I'm absolutely open to exploring them together.

We'd work on the game at our own pace, hoping to eventually finish it. The prototype is already mostly done, so we're looking for someone we can talk, create, and learn together with throughout this journey.

It doesn't have to be perfect—it just has to be made with love for games and for creating something.

If it helps, here's a basic description of what the environment would look like. We're still figuring out the puzzles and everything else, so there will probably be more interactable items, like, a key to the attic...

(This is the sketch I made while we were planning the jam, along with room descriptions that may still change.)

Description of each part of the apartment (from left to right):

  1.     Balcony: It doesn't play a major role in the gameplay—it's mostly there for atmosphere. When the player steps outside, pigeons fly off the railing, cars can be heard in the distance, and maybe there's laundry hanging from a line above... you get the feeling of a big city. The player can sit on a chair or smoke a cigar. A possible mechanic here could be messing around with the TV antenna...
  2.     Kitchen: There's parrot food in the drawer under the sink; if you feed it to him, he'll give you a hint. There's also a microwave, a refrigerator, and a few drawers that could become part of a puzzle.
  3.     Living Room: This is where the character returns most often, and where the game both begins and ends. It features an annoying parrot, a sofa, a shelf, a TV, and a console. Whenever the player finds a game, they come back here to play it. During those moments, the scene switches to a separate TV gameplay scene.
  4.     Bedroom: There's a bed, a desk, and maybe a few posters on the walls. Dusty boxes under the bed could become part of a puzzle. In the upper-left corner of the room, there's an attic ladder in the ceiling that can be lowered later.
  5.     Attic: Lots of old forgotten stuff, maybe a secret or an easter egg... On the far left, there's a box slightly illuminated by moonlight coming through the window, and inside it is the final game.

This can all be adapted, of course.

So who I'm looking for

I'm looking for someone who'd enjoy creating this together at a relaxed pace.

  •     No deadlines.
  •     No pressure.
  •     No commercial expectations.
  •     Just making a small game with love for games and creativity.

The prototype already exists, so this isn't just an idea on paper—we'd be building on something that's already playable.

If needed, I can even help with pixel art for the mini-games, but I'd love to have someone who wants to give the main adventure its own visual identity.

If this sounds like something you'd enjoy, I'd love to chat

Hello Deki, this project genuinely sounds like a fun one to work on. I’m a 2D/3D artist and I would love to help turn the apartment, characters, and environments from placeholders into something with its own personality and charm. I also like the idea of experimenting with the different gaming eras and building the visual style together. I’m comfortable working at a relaxed pace and would be happy to chat about the project and see how I can contribute. Discord: [kenith0886]

Hey! Just checking in are you still looking for someone to help with this project? I’d be happy to help and can get started right away. If you’re still looking, feel free to add me on Discord: [richyluck]
