Heres my play of the tournament. thanks for hosting.
This is a neat twist on pinball! I really like the way it builds and gets more hectic, and the upgrades are a fun touch I played it with a friend, but I imagine it would be more exciting with extra people. Even with just the two of us, I really felt the competitive spirit.
I'm not sure if I like that you can't use both bumpers at the same time - part of me understands this for balancing purposes, but switching back and forth between the two bumpers feels a bit unresponsive, like sometimes you'll try to flip a bumper and it just won't flip, because you've used the other one too recently.
I played the game a bit on stream around 1:42:50. I was having some browser issues so the game tragically lagged a bit - I didn't have hardware acceleration turned on. I tested the game again and it was running fine, so I'm sorry about that!
Hi there! Thanks for playing, I will be returning the fav later into the night.
I'm sorry you had hardware acceleration off, both for the game presentation but also for your own enjoyment. But hey, something good came out of this - I've made an autodetection based on browser that shows and gives you steps to turn it on. And there's another option in firefox and brave where Canvas is blocked too... so thank you for that one!
You can use both flippers at the same time, A/D, arrow/arrow, ctrl/ctrl or controller L1/R1. It could have been browser related too.
Also ITCH was out of date, because I was afraid to break the build for some discord FQ9 competition we had. Fixed in between, all cards have tooltips and lots of info too. And the Leaderboard is more detailed than before (with what builds each player had in case anyone is curious about the 'meta').
Thanks again and gl hf!
Hey! With FQ9 ending soon, I wanted to let you know that I won't be able to cover your game until after the event. If you're okay with waiting, just keep the game on the event and I'll be getting around to it over the next couple of months or so. :)
No worries mate, you had so many games, so little time. And you did push hard days in a row, so kudos to you and the entire FQ9 team.
<3 take care
Feel like the game is a lot of fun, very chaotic. Visuals and sound are appealing, controls felt really good. One of my main issues is the scoring is just unclear. I was really trying to figure it out and it never clicked for me, even after playing the tutorial. I still really enjoyed it and had a lot of fun, great job.
Thank you so much for your review, I will return the favor later when I finish work. I wouldn't be here w/o everyone's feedback <3
-----------
Regarding what scores from where, the game is roguelike-ish with 10 waves, and I do run some small tournaments in weekends and adjust the META. I know it sounds overcomplicated for a 'pinball game' but this was my twist, deep behind the simple gameplay the BUILD you do is often more important than anything else, and it's something players learn in time or they can go on leaderboards and check them out.
W/o you needing to play another game, if you just go main menu -> lederboards, you can open every game. After 10 waves I send the game data into a cloudflare database and I have many end points tracked, from build history to each type of lane, to bonuses that come from various cards. This project started as an experiment with BIG DATA in mind, and it was some PONG multiplayer that slowly took the shape of a pinball arena game.
Also I feed this data to some python scripts that simulate it and helps me take balance notes and even teach BOTS what is good and what is not, so they are more competitive. Even if the game is PvP focused, the bots do a half decent job.
But the most important thing is -> you score goals -> you steal land -> you score higher in your land. Then you slowly learn the meta.
Is it overengineered? YES. Is it still unbalanced? YES. But I'm on 3rd season and with every game I get more data that helps me balance it more. A bit TMI but I think your observation was very good: I can't see super ez how deep the rabbit hole go :D
Thanks again, will be back later tonite <3 GL HF!
You have a really good system for tracking data and balancing, that is awesome! That lack of clarity on what scores points and how much is pretty much the only thing I really didn't click with instantly. I'll keep watching your progress on this, great job.
There is a bug where one flipper gets stuck.
Another one, not sure if it's a bug: sometimes although my flippers touched the opponent ball, it did not change color and neither did it add the score to my side.
Love ❤️ the game!
Thank you very much! I'll investigate the flipper bug.
Also on mobile I wanted to force landscape and fullscreen when Wave1 starts; if it didn't, well, that's another mobile bug to look into. But game looks good portrait, so I might just give you the option to play it however you want it.
About the color change, that's intentional. You have to hit the ball with a bit of force to own it. If you just touch it or stop it, it won't become yours.
The flipper stuck bug should be fixed. Ty for bringing it up!
The visual presentation is definitely the strongest part for me. I really like the overall look of the arena and the way everything is presented on screen — it immediately caught my attention.
Unfortunately, I had a hard time understanding the controls and never really felt like I was fully in control of what was happening. Because of that, the gameplay itself didn't quite click with me.
Still, the visual side is genuinely worth paying attention to, and with clearer controls or a more straightforward introduction I think the game would be much easier to get into
Thanks for playing! <3
The game was made for PvP, especially 3-4 players, steal their land, make good choices after each wave, look at leaderboard and see what abilities and builds score better etc. It has a bit of depth behind the 2 flippers and one shake ability. If you had more control, then you would have guarantee goals and you would pick up exactly what you want.
But this is super good feedback and if there's something that is clear - I should add a tutorial. Now there's only a 'how to play' page that's a lot of info, all at once and quite cold unless you visit it AFTER you played the game once. And the question is, how would you know how to play it the first time, since nobody starts with 'how to play' :D
Thanks again and gl hf!
