The Bell That Remembers Adventure Module

here's a village on the coast where an old bell has been ringing for generations. It warns sailors away from the rocks, calls people home before a storm, and reminds the living of those they've lost.

At least, that's how it used to be.

Now the bell has gone quiet. The sea is getting rough, strange voices are carrying across the water, and the people of Bellwether are starting to hear from the dead.

Some of them want those voices to stay.

Others just want them to stop.

And somewhere beneath the old bell tower, a woman is trying to hold on to the last thing she has left of her daughter.

The Bell That Remembers is a fantasy adventure about ordinary people caught in an extraordinary situation. There's a mystery to solve, a village to explore, secrets buried beneath the cliffs, and a storm that won't wait forever. But the heart of the adventure isn't about finding a villain and putting an end to their plans.

It's about figuring out what happened, understanding why people are willing to risk so much, and deciding what you're going to do about it.

What's in the adventure?

  • A complete adventure designed for roughly 4–8 hours of play.
  • A coastal village full of people with their own problems, secrets, and reasons for disagreeing.
  • A mystery that rewards paying attention, asking questions, and putting clues together.
  • Exploration through flooded passages, forgotten chambers, and an old bell tower.
  • A puzzle that can be solved through observation and reasoning.
  • An optional combat encounter, with other ways to handle the situation if your group prefers talking or thinking their way through a problem.
  • Multiple endings shaped by the choices your players make.
  • Guidance for the GM, including clue alternatives, pacing advice, encounter suggestions, and a player handout.

A little more than a dungeon crawl

I wanted this adventure to be about people, not just a problem for the players to fix.

The bell-keeper isn't trying to hurt anyone. She's grieving, and she's convinced that keeping the past close is the only way she can bear to live without her daughter.

The harbor-master wants to protect his village, but he's carrying guilt over something he may not fully understand himself. Other villagers have their own reasons for wanting the bell saved—or wanting it gone for good.

Nobody has the whole truth. Nobody has a perfect answer.

Your players might agree with one of them, disagree with all of them, or come up with something nobody in the village considered. That's part of the fun.

Made to run at your table

This is a system-neutral adventure, so you can adapt it to the fantasy RPG your group already plays.

It's written to give the GM room to breathe. The important clues don't hinge on one lucky dice roll, the puzzle comes with hints and a clear solution, and the climax can play out through roleplay, problem-solving, combat, or a mixture of all three.

You don't need to build a campaign around it. Bring your players, give them a reason to visit Bellwether, and see what they do when the truth comes out.
