Concept: very creative stuff, I really like the weird town with all these surreal characters. Combined with the game boy aesthetic it has a very uncanny yet charming vibe to it that I just adore! Feels like you've been expecting the fever dream theme more lol.

Gameplay: I really like how it's basically a big puzzle that's not too complicated but still really engaging. The writing is really really clever. The zombies feel a bit too punishing, they are quite fast and hard to pass by if they happen to cross your path, but their main issue is that if they catch you it's start all over which can be really discouraging, especially when nearing the end. Also it took a while until I figured out what I was supposed to do as I just happened to not enter the first house that I spawned at so I just wandered aimlessly talking to random people. Something like a map that at least shows the location of the houses, or some more distinguishing features around the place would be nice also as it was kinda hard to know where I was when the background is just a solid color and the houses are kinda identical. I did mostly manage to build a mental map by the end though which was really fun to keep track of.

Art: I really like this aesthetic feels surreal and dream-like. It's also simple but nice and polished.

Audio: it's also simple but gives a lot to the atmosphere to the game, I really like it.

Personally, this game is one of my favourites this jam. The puzzle and mental mapping aspects are really good, supported by the dialogue, and the weird surreal vibe of it is very on point. Awesome stuff, congrats!

Thank you so much for playing and for your exhaustive, detailed review! I realized that entering the first house wasn't obvious for the player, although I later added a sign next to it. I was limited by the Game Boy's memory, so I couldn't add all the landmarks and roads I wanted (but in the end its seems to make the place more eerie haha). Thus, I was in the hope that players would make a mental map or draw on the maps shown in the screenshots, like we used to back in the day. I'm really glad you liked it!!!

Couldnt play it as a .gb ...

Developer

Oh, I'm sorry it wouldn't work on your end 😮 I used VBA-M on PC and Pizza Boy on Android for debugging. Thanks for trying to play it, let me know if I can help in some way!

Bonjour! The cast is delightful and feels very quotable. I didn't end up finding the necromancer, but I did have a lot of fun talking to all of your creations and dodging the zombies. As I type this, I can see an answer key in the screenshots, so I'll come back to give this another go later! Also, very cool that this would run on a Gameboy. It really has the feel of a Gameboy game.

Developer

Bonjour ! Congrats for noticing the little screenshots clues 😁 I'm really glad you enjoyed the characters and their backstories, thank you so much for playing and your review!! 🎃

This wouldn't start for me in the browser even after refreshing a few times. Maybe I can try and download it to play in the GB emulator on my phone or something, and will rate it once I get a chance to play.

Developer

Oh, I'm sorry this wouldn't work on your devices 😮 Thanks for trying to play it!

I actually got it worked when I tried on mobile! I couldn't find the necromancer, but I did love the color cast of characters you created!

Definitely a neat little game and having it work for the GB is impressive too!

Developer

Thank you so much!! 🎃 Yes I’m glad this gave me the opportunity to make good use of all the original characters I created for past Inktobers!

I really like this idea of a GameBoy console rom and the original artwork. The game is a little difficult though! Maybe the zombies could just go in a straight line and not follow after the player to make it easier to move from house to house - or a way to shoot/freeze the zombies or something. Nice job though!

Developer

Thanks a lot for playing and for your feedback! 🧟‍♂️ I reduced the number of enemies and added neighborhood signs for clarity. I wanted to add a feature that freezes zombies with projectiles, but I didn’t have time. Have a nice jam!
