Lined up on the runway

Hi all! I'm Joris from the Netherlands, and this is the devlog for Hangar Valley: a calm flying game you play in VR on Meta Quest, or on a screen on PC and Mac. No combat, and no clock unless you pick a timed job. You start in your own hangar, climb into a small plane and fly a quiet valley of rivers, a lake, forests and snowy mountains.

This topic is the running log: what got built, what broke and what comes next. I'll post here at least once a week.

Quick facts

  • Engine: Godot 4.6
  • Platforms: Meta Quest 2 and 3 (standalone VR), PC and Mac
  • Status: pre-alpha, free demo for PC, Mac and Quest on the game page
  • Languages: English and Dutch

What works in the current build

  • Start in your hangar, climb in, release the parking brake and roll out onto the apron
  • Work the cockpit by hand: switches, knobs, throttle and radio
  • Fly by sight, or switch on the autopilot and let your copilot take over
  • Radio calls on the tower frequency
  • Passenger and cargo jobs, a career and your own registration
  • Fuel up at the pump
  • Open the door, get out and walk around the airfield

The free demo is free flight in the small plane: hangar, cockpit, autopilot and walking around. Copilot, talking to the tower, jobs and career are not in the demo. The full game is not out yet: it is headed for Early Access, no date yet.

On the workbench

  • The instrument panel at real scale. Every gauge in its real spot at 1:1. The goal: read it in the headset without leaning in. A reading test in the headset decides if it ends up slightly bigger.
  • A second, much bigger aircraft. A twin jet airliner with a walk-through cabin in the works: seat rows, signs, doors that open and overwing exits.
  • The test hangar. A rig that loads a wing until it bends, then until it breaks. The break point depends on how fast the load builds; the airliner wing bends 5 to 6 metres before it gives. VR controls for it are still to do.
  • Calmer birds. The old flocks were far too busy. The new version has fewer and smaller flocks, with softer calls.

None of this is in the demo or a release yet; it lives in my dev build.

Roadmap

Next updates: morning fog, low cloud, rain, sunset, and night with your lights on.

Later: an airfield that grows with you, upgrades for your plane, the test hangar, more aircraft, new places in the valley, a wider map beyond it, and talking to the tower with your own voice.

No dates. When something is ready, it ships.

How it's built

  • Godot 4.6 with the Mobile renderer, so the same game runs standalone on a Quest.
  • A painted look. No real-time lights or shadows: light and colour are painted in the shaders. That keeps it fast in the headset and gives the valley its soft look.

  • What would you want to do in the valley, besides flying?
