What did you revive? What was your inspiration?
I revived an old idea I had abandoned: a war-themed chess game inspired by Chess Battle, where the pieces are soldiers instead of classic chess pieces. The game has three eras (Napoleonic Wars, World War I and World War II), each with its own two sides and its own set of pieces: infantry, cavalry, officers, artillery, tanks, leaders and civilians. Every capture is meant to play out as a small animated battle. The jam theme gave me the push to take the idea out of the drawer and turn it into a playable game.
How do you play your game? Is controller required?
No controller needed. The game is played with the mouse only: click a piece, then click one of the highlighted squares to move or capture. Standard chess rules apply. From the main menu, pick an era (Napoleonic, WWI or WWII), then choose your side.
What asset packs did you use? What, if any, content is AI generated?
The code and the Art AI generated

Great fun! I must confess I struggled with the design of the pieces. It's a challenge to steer away from a design that has such a recognizable pattern
Interesting idea! I have two questions:
Firstly, I'm curious how you implemented the chess computer. Was it something you had to manually intervene to implement or is there some library doing it for you?
Secondly, I wonder had you ever thought of implementing new pieces maybe. To me when I hear a war-themed chess game in three eras i thought it would be a cool idea to build on the mechanics of chess maybe, like in WW1 having some squares be trenches or having some aerial pieces in WW2.
Nice chance to take a known game and use it to really practice and flex your pixel art and animation skills.
I'm not good at Chess, but I'm pretty sure I ran into a bug where the game killed my king, but I'm not sure how the move was allowed to occur. The game had done a good job of not allowing me to move into check prior to that point so I think the movement/attack validation code might have given a pawn some extra movement for the kill.
It felt a little weird to me that the bishops specifically had unique character sprites between them while the other more significant pieces didn't follow that pattern. I'd say that it's probably better keep unit type visuals uniform for all units of that type, but unique bishops may just be a specific case from other Chess games that is a standard that I'm not familiar with.
