ROB & ROLL 0.3.0 — learning the job, and a city that reacts

I'm working on ROB & ROLL, an early car-combat game set in a small Phuket city. Three gangs have one night to make money: intercept convoys, fight over loot, load it onto your vehicle and get it back to your car wash. The money you carry is still at risk; your position at dawn depends on what you actually bank.

For 0.3.0, I worked on explaining that loop and making the streets react to what happens around them.

The new offline tutorial is split into five episodes. It introduces driving, combat, your partner, collecting and delivering loot, and the bigger objectives. Short camera shots point out what each lesson is asking you to do. I'd particularly like to hear whether this makes the first match understandable without reading a separate guide.

Residents now walk the pavements, dodge approaching cars and can report nearby trouble to the police. Your partner can rob residents from a rival district, but the cash still has to come back to the car and then to your wash. Witness calls depend on seeing the incident, rather than magically knowing where you drove afterwards.

Food carts and market stalls close when there's danger nearby. Road crews come to rebuild damaged street objects, and breaking public property now costs your gang money. I also revised the night and rain effects, engine sounds and driving feedback: body movement, wheel blur and clearer damage effects. I moved some first-match loading work out of the action, though occasional hitches and slower performance late in a busy match remain known issues.

You can try 0.3.0 free on Windows: download ROB & ROLL. Start with the tutorial, then try a match against bots; you don't need other players to get going. The game has English and Russian text. This is still an early prototype, and I'd welcome feedback, bug reports and suggestions.

  • Where did the tutorial or the loot-to-car-wash loop first become unclear?
  • How do driving, aiming and collisions feel?
  • Do the police and street reactions make sense to you?

Please reply here or in the game's itch.io comments. For bugs, include the version, what you were doing, a screenshot if useful, and steps to reproduce it if you can. Performance reports are more useful with your PC specs and graphics settings.
