Project Game Phoenix is looking for 2 to 3 programmers to help modernize and maintain an existing licensed 3D MMORPG.

The project is already running and in active development. This is not a greenfield project. Most of the work involves understanding an established codebase, fixing issues, modernizing older systems, and helping implement new features alongside our lead developer.

The codebase includes both Java and C++. You do not need to be an expert in both, but you should be comfortable reading and working in at least one of them.

We are especially interested in developers who enjoy working with legacy systems, debugging unfamiliar code, game or server systems, networking, tools, build systems, or engine-related development.

This is a flexible, part-time contributor role. We currently offer a one-time stipend plus a profit-sharing arrangement rather than a traditional salary. Specific terms will be discussed with selected applicants based on experience, availability, and expected contribution.

Requirements:

• Comfortable with Java and/or C++
• Comfortable using Git and working with an existing repository
• Able to read and understand unfamiliar code
• Good communication and ability to complete scoped tasks
• Interest in game development, legacy systems, or MMORPGs

Professional game development experience is not required. Personal projects, open-source work, modding, engine work, or other relevant experience are welcome.

Applications are reviewed by the project lead and development team. Selected applicants will have a short introductory conversation and may also have a brief technical discussion with our lead developer.

Applicants selected to join the team will review the contributor terms, including the stipend and profit-sharing arrangement, and complete an NDA before receiving access to project materials, source code, and repositories.

If interested, please reply or send a short introduction with your programming background, availability, and any GitHub, portfolio, or project links you would like us to review.

Hi, I'm Vess, a student developer working in C++ and Java. I'd like to contribute part-time to modernising and maintaining the MMORPG — I'm comfortable reading unfamiliar legacy code and debugging. Happy to sign the NDA before repo access. Could you share the stipend amount and terms for selected applicants?

Project Phoenix caught my attention because working with an established MMORPG codebase requires more than just writing new code it takes patience, problem-solving, and the ability to understand existing systems. My background in game development and C++ programming makes this opportunity particularly interesting to me. I'd be glad to contribute to maintaining the project, resolving technical issues, and supporting new development alongside your lead developer.
