HUNDRA: Porting my Game Boy dice game to PC and Android, now with roguelike mode

What

Hundra is my take on the classic dice game Pig. Roll as long as you dare, every roll adds to your turn, a 1 wipes it, first to 100 wins. Nine cards bend the odds and five AI rivals each play with their own personality. I made it in GB Studio during this summer and autumn. It runs on real hardware and there's a small batch of physical cartridges.

Why

I've taken the Game Boy version as far as I can. I wanted a roguelike mode and more customization. So I'm rebuilding it in LÖVE 2D for PC and Android. This topic follows the port from here to release. I'll keep every update in this one thread.

Change log/New content for PC & Android

  • The Gauntlet: a roguelike run of 15 matches with coins, a card shop, perks and boss rules that change the game. Lose once and the run is over.
  • New looks and colors.
  • A tutorial match against Jo.
  • The original cartridge runs inside the PC version, on the title menu. (In the demo you choose it on a separate screen).
  • Customizable character looks and names for the players.

What's left

  • Fine-tuning and bugfixes.
  • Adding new content.

PLAY IT!

Project page, with a free browser demo: HUNDRA.
If you want to be told when a new build is up, follow my itch account rather than this topic.

Help me!

  • The game is basically done, so the question I really want answered is: is it worth it? Would you pay for it, and what would make it worth it? I was thinking $4.99 for all versions.
  • Feedback on the original GB game is just as welcome.

Short answers are fine.

I use music from Yogi (Tronimal).
Portraits based on assets from Penusbmic.
Claude helped me with the Lua code.

I got asked to make a custom dice for a player and I think is a fun way to make the game connect with the players.

So right now I'm making a cat dice that the player will name and decide how to unlock.

Fun!

It's hard to make the cat fit the dice frame and still look good but I'll get there. It's a great exercise in pixel art.

YUJI

This set of dice is made for a player who wanted his cats to be in the game. Fiji (the black cat) and Yuko (the tabby cat). To play them you have to beat "first to 100" 99 times, so it's rather exclusive!

CHANGELOG

In the upcoming PC/Android game:

MENUS

  • The title screen has five entries: PLAY, GAUNTLET, SETTINGS, EXTRAS, QUIT GAME (QUIT GAME on desktop only).
  • New PLAY screen: VS COM, 2 PLAYERS, TOURNAMENT, MODE 100/PIG, GOAL, BACK, with the dice and the goal in a panel on the right.
  • SETTINGS is split into GAMEPLAY, VIDEO, SOUND, PLAYERS, LANGUAGE, BACK. Music and sound effects live under SOUND.
  • New EXTRAS screen: GAME BOY, RECORDS, RULES 100/PIG, CREDITS, BACK. The Game Boy emulator and the records return here.
  • The version number moved from the corner into the credits.

CONTROLS

  • Gamepad is now fully supported
(+1)

I would show progress toward the 99 wins next to the locked cat dice. That is a long goal, and seeing how close you are could make it feel less distant

Thanks for the post and idea!

Right now you can see how many wins you have. But you mean like a bar or something inside the "choose dice" option? That's actually a really neat idea.

This is how it looks in the settings menu today:

(+1)
yes, right in the dice picker next to the locked set. Even plain text like 43/99 wins would do. Then the player can see the goal without leaving that screen to check settings

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT

Online matches will be a thing when the game drops! You can play 1v1 or start a tounament with 4 or 8 players. It will work on both Android and PC and you can play against each other from different platforms.
