The torch-as-light idea fits the jam well, and putting the story in inscriptions you stop and read along the path suits a dark, quiet platformer.

One small bug, checked on the live web build: keys pressed while the game is paused go off when you resume. With the pause menu open, one tap of Up (or W/Space) and then RESUME, and the thief jumps right away with nothing held (vy -580 on the first frame back, 2/2 runs). Tapping F while paused turns the torch to DIM on resume the same way. The keydown handler sets jumpQueued / torchToggleQueued in every state, and togglePause() doesn't clear them when it sets gameState back to PLAYING. Your scene code already clears all three queued flags in closeScenes(), so the same line in togglePause() would fix it. (The intro doesn't leak; I tried the same taps there.)

Thank you for testing The Ember Thief and for the detailed feedback! I'm glad the environmental storytelling worked for you. I'll try to look into the pause-related bug when I can.
