Underlode – Development Update

Hi! Underlode is a sandbox game I'm developing, inspired by games like Minecraft and Terraria.

Version 0.8a is coming out very soon, so I thought this would be a good time to share some insight into its development, what I've been working on, and where the game currently stands.

There's been quite a lot of progress lately, and I wanted to give everyone a look at what's coming!

New Boss & Dimension

The first major addition in this update is a brand-new boss, along with a new dimension called The Overgrowth.

The Overgrowth is where you'll encounter the boss, or more specifically, where you'll summon it. You'll have to explore the dimension, prepare yourself and eventually fight the boss. Defeating it rewards you with some of the strongest gear currently available in the game.

New Armor & Ores

This update introduces several new armor sets, including Iron and Gold armor, with each set offering better protection than the previous one.

There's also a new ore called Aetherite, which is used to craft the latest armor set. However, obtaining it isn't quite as simple as mining it. You'll need to defeat the boss first before you can properly access this new resource.

Aetherite armor will be revealed soon.

Inventory & Equipment Changes

The inventory UI has also received some changes, including two new equipment slots: the Offhand slot and the Accessory slot.

The Offhand slot lets you hold items in your other hand, such as torches, so you can use them while mining without constantly switching between inventory slots.

The Accessory slot is for a new type of equipment that grants special abilities. You'll obtain your first accessory by defeating the new boss. I won't reveal too much about what it does just yet!

Other Changes & Improvements

Finally, there are quite a few smaller additions and improvements included in this update.

These include a new weather system featuring rain and wind, a new enemy (Zombies), and water, which is still a work in progress and has a few bugs.

There are also several new blocks, improved lighting, and various technical changes aimed at improving performance.

That's most of what I've been working on for version 0.8a. There's still plenty more I'd like to add and improve, but I'm excited to get this update out!

Thanks for checking out Underlode!

The Offhand slot for torches is a really nice quality of life touch, since constantly swapping between the pickaxe and a torch is one of the more tedious parts of games like this. Gating Aetherite behind the boss is a good way to give the fight a reason to exist beyond its own loot drop.

One thing I'd be curious about is how the boss gets summoned, because a hint somewhere in The Overgrowth about what you need usually saves players from having to look it up. With water still being a bit buggy, it might also help to mention the known issues in the patch notes, so people report new problems instead of the same ones. Rain, wind and the improved lighting should do a lot for the mood, both on the surface and underground.

Good luck getting 0.8a out, it sounds like a big step for the game.

Hi You need runes to summon the boss, which can be found throughout The Overgrowth. Ill explain the summoning process in more detail in the release notes

As for the water, it works for the most part, but it's not quite what I originally had in mind. Ill hopefully be able to improve it in future updates

Thanks for checking out the game and sharing your feedback.

Having the boss summoned with runes you find across The Overgrowth, and Aetherite locked behind beating it, gives the new dimension a proper purpose. Since Terraria and Minecraft comparisons are what people will bring in, I'd make the first line of your page about what is different, for example the boss gated progression into new armor. For the top of the page, a short GIF of a player using the Offhand torch while mining and then entering The Overgrowth would show off both the lighting work and the quality of life changes in a few seconds. Keep the water bugs out of that clip and list them as known issues further down.

Oh i didnt think of that, thanks for suggesting!
