1. Hi there! What's your name? Want to introduce yourself?

I'm Cam. I'm an ex software dev (Procreate for iPad/iPhone) trying to get into making games. I have also worked as an animator on a TV Show called Pixel Pinkie. I'm an artist learning to program so I can have a better shot at making games.

2. Did you participate in the last jam we held? If so, what do you plan on doing better this time? If not, what's your reason for joining?

I did participate and I made something pretty bad. That said, my goal was to submit something and that I did. I want to do the same thing again, but this time I want to focus on nailing a core game loop and actually making it fun. I'm not sure I'll achieve it but I'm going to upload it anyway.

3. What games are your favorites? Did any of them inspire you, or made you want to make your own?

I'm a big fan of Nintendo (in spite of the face palm inducing decisions they sometimes make) and Shigeru Miyamoto's influence on gaming is probably the main reason I want to make games.

4. Do you have experience with game development? What did you do/with what engine?

I've been dabbling in Unity for a few years but I haven't done a great deal because the time I get is pretty limited. Slooooow and steady.

5. Tell us about something you're passionate about!

I live by Shigeru Miyamoto's quote:

A good idea is something that does not solve just one single problem, but rather can solve multiple problems at once.

I hope to one day make a game that successfully practices this belief. Games like Splatoon, Mario, Downwell, Luftrausers all use this and the simplicity of the mechanics really gets me envious.

6. What are your goals for this game jam?

  1. Create a (fun) core game loop
  2. To submit my progress at the end

7. Any advice to new jammers (if you're a veteran)?

I always just say to think small, then divide that by half and then cut it in half again and you might actually achieve that. Oh, and submit your work at the end no matter what state it's in. There's a YouTuber Jupiter Hadley that plays many (if not all) of the games uploaded for this Jam and whilst it's super embarrassing to see my "games" appearing in her videos it's also great for feedback. It also gets you used to being in that uncomfortable spotlight that a real game dev will be in one day when you release a game for real. I've learnt some important things from those few seconds she's played my disasterpiece.

Super-duper thanks for sharing that YouTube channel. Always cool to see what everyone else makes, especially when you have no idea what you're making yourself. Which I don't think anyone does. At all. Why are we here again?

You're welcome! Hopefully  you'll see your game on there after the jam ends. Good luck! :)

Host (1 edit)

ughh i love games like that. and this is probably the best scope advice i've seen in this thread haha! it's great to have you back and best of luck this round cam!

Thank you. I'm pooping myself right now so close to the start date without an idea!

1. Hi there! What's your name? Want to introduce yourself?

Hi, I'm anomaly. I'm a programmer though my current job is not related to video games.

2. Did you participate in the last jam we held? If so, what do you plan on doing better this time? If not, what's your reason for joining?

I didn't participate in any of previous jams, though I participated in one Global Game Jam event as a part of a team (that was made up at the event). This time, after getting better in Unity, I feel that I can enter jam not as a part of a larger team, but to make my own game.

3. What games are your favorites? Did any of them inspire you, or made you want to make your own?

It's really hard to choose my absolutely favorite games, but if I have to I would say:

  • Ori And The Blind Forest - Cute protagonist with story that's both beautiful and sad. I love both the gameplay, the graphics and how they seem to blend into each other.
  • Crypt Of The Necrodancer - Awesome combination of rhythm game and rougelike. It doesn't suffer from early level dullness like Binding Of Isaac or Spelunky, and the feeling of quickly making decision to the rhythm of great music is just fantastic.
  • Undertale - Great story with both funny and sad moments. IMO this game is showing the direction where future games should go. It's one of few games that really utilized games as a different medium than movies or books.
  • Night In The Woods - 2D exploration adventure game with great soundtrack, many hidden stuff to explore and a great story with many themes that I haven't seen explored in video games before.
  • Heroes Of Might And Magic 3 - Great old time classic, one of the games that probably would never get old. When I'm stressed and want to relax I start map on knight difficulty, turn on music or podcast, and enjoy the slaughter of computer's armies.

I general I think that my ideal game is 2D games with non-human protagonists/NPCs and story set in crapsaccharine world.

Though I think that the most inspiring for me were countless of freeware games on rpgmaker.net. I played a lot of them as a teen. Their quality varied from masterpieces from Lysander to first projects of 12 yo. kids that were quickly forgotten by the them. These games introduced me to the idea that everyone can make a game. Even if sometimes they probably shouldn't.

4. Do you have experience with game development? What did you do/with what engine?

I experimented a little with RPG Maker 2k3, but it was a long time ago. I still have the project backed up, even if only for the nostalgia.
I made some simple games with XNA and Unity in the past. Currently I'm making simple arkanoid clone in Unity.
Also I've made Unity Certification on last Unite Europe.

5. Tell us about something you're passionate about!

Games. Both playing and making. Duh.
Science. I love reading popular-science books, when I'm more experienced in writing games I would mind to try use games as edutainment like Colobot, etc.
I'm also interested in AI, especially in games. I've made poker bot as a master thesis.

6. What are your goals for this game jam?

I want to:

  • Make something that is in working state. That would be my first game published to the whole world (Unless I finish my arkanoid clone before jam).
  •  Learn how to make 2D platformers in Unity. I experimented a little in unity with them, but effects were sloppy.
  • Have fun. ^_^

7. Any advice to new jammers (if you're a veteran)?

I only was one one game jam before, and it was 48 hours jam, so I don't know how much applicable this advice is to itch.io jam but...
If you're working in a team make sure that everyone has the same version of the engine before the jam starts. Also make sure that everyone knows how to integrate source control with the engine. Synchronizing with pendrives when the clock is ticking is not fun.

Host (2 edits) (+2)

ok i'm gonna be selfish and introduce myself for newer jammers

1. Hi there! What's your name? Want to introduce yourself?

hey friends! my name is j (yeah, like the letter. no, it doesn't stand for anything). i'm a baby technical artist.

2. Did you participate in the last jam we held? If so, what do you plan on doing better this time? If not, what's your reason for joining?

sadly i don't really have the time to work on a game this round because i'm producing an independent game project in addition to hosting this jam! (and working fulltime at a game studio...!) i would love to work on more personal game stuff maybe after this project i'm currently on.

3. What games are your favorites? Did any of them inspire you, or made you want to make your own?

my favorite games include: kentucky route zero, we know the devil, hyper light drifter, fire emblem series, dishonored, prey, and a bunch more i'm not remembering off the top of my head. krz inspired my senior thesis that i want to return to sometime!

4. Do you have experience with game development? What did you do/with what engine?

i have experience with some 2D, 3D, unreal engine 4, node based shaders, and a liiiittle bit of shader languages.

5. Tell us about something you're passionate about!

i'm passionate about making game development more inclusive + accessible! i've already yelled a lot about it but i think it is really important for people to see dev as something that can be done as a hobby. i also want to see games tell a broader range of stories.

7. Any advice to new jammers (if you're a veteran)?

you will scope down! and that's ok. two keys to project management for me are being honest and forgiving myself.

Pardon, but what does "scope down" mean? Does it mean just like. ... narrowing your focus on your broader idea to get some smaller specific things done?

Submitted(+1)

Yes. It is to cut things from the original scope to get the project Done. Because DONE is more important than perfect (at the beginning) hehe

(+1)

Thank you for confirming!

Thankfully I do already know that, even though I didn't know what scope meant, haha. "Perfect never finishes," is something that someone said to me when I was younger, and it's something I think about every time someone asks me how I know when an art piece is done.

It's never done, it's just when I stop working on it, laughs. You can noodle with something forever and never ever finish it.

Submitted (1 edit)

Awesome phrase ! "Perfect never ends", thanks for that :)

And this is a good way to describe some work, there is always something to be done, but if you do not stop, you will not start other things...

Good thoughts

Hey everyone!  Thought i'd introduce myself

1. Hi there! What's your name? Want to introduce yourself?

My name is Chris, I've been a indie developer for some years now. but actually started having the 'will' to actually start releasing products

2. Did you participate in the last jam we held? If so, what do you plan on doing better this time? If not, what's your reason for joining?

First time hearing about the Jam.  My reason for joining is to network.  Make some new friends above all.

3. What games are your favorites? Did any of them inspire you, or made you want to make your own?

I love sandbox games. Mainly Minecraft (modded) but more importantly I love RTS games such as Command & Conquer

4. Do you have experience with game development? What did you do/with what engine?

I work in multiple engines. from Construct 2, Unity3D, RPG Maker MX.  I've created a few games. Got them ported on the Nintendo Wii U (Sketch Wars, Cube Blitz). Used Unity3d to make a few android games. Currently working with Xbox (Microsoft) to get 2 of our newer games ported (See Wizards:Home in my profile)

5. Tell us about something you're passionate about!

I love telling a story through games.  My first passion is Cinematography and Post Production but requires good cameras and crew for that.

6. What are your goals for this game jam?'

I'm mainly here for networking

7. Any advice to new jammers (if you're a veteran)?

Dont be afraid to release something.  If you keep polishing it you'll never release it. Also. Look up Extra Credits on youtube. it'll save your life.

1. Hi there! What's your name? Want to introduce yourself?
Hello pumpkins! My name is Noel, and I Make Art to survive. Not games though. But maybe that'll change someday, who knows!

2. Did you participate in the last jam we held? If so, what do you plan on doing better this time? If not, what's your reason for joining?
I did participate in A jam - I dont know if it was the last one or the one before. I didn't end up finishing my game because I was hitting a wall of what the program I was learning was able to do. I did learn a lot about the program, but mostly what I learned was that it wasn't for me, which is a-okay.  So we're trying a new one this time! Maybe this time I'll make something that someone else gets to play!

I don't think I'll ever really fully be happy until I learn a coding language for myself, so if my program cant do something for me, maybe I can make a plugin, but that's a bit further off of a goal.

I specifically joined this jam because a friend of mine went "Hey Noel, are you gonna join the game jam this year" and I went "what yeah when is it happening" and she goes "in like ten days." WELL. Guess I better get ready!!! I also, in general, just really would love to make games. I've got a lot of stories in my heart that I'd like to share!

3. What games are your favorites? Did any of them inspire you, or made you want to make your own?
My favorite games are Threads of Fate, Legend of Mana, also pretty much every Harvest Moon type game ever.  An eventual goal is to learn how to make that sort of living your life sim. I really love games where you interact with the world, and it interacts back. Peacefully, quietly growing your own home, changing the world around you, shaping it on what you do. Not like minecraft or the other voxel games - very specifically I love the peacefulness of the more story driven type sim games where you can do whatever you do or don't want. It's okay. Build a town, build a world. I love it.

I'm also a big fan of silent hill ( one and two. Get me started on one at your own peril - I know it's the lesser loved of the games, but I can talk for a solid hour about how I think removing its lore from the franchise - specifically removing Alessa from the franchise - makes the entire thing weaker. Be still, my heart, storytelling.), and I've been playing the zelda games for. Uh. Ever. The first game I ever played was The Legend Of Zelda as a wee bab. Granted, it was my dad's save, and he didn't want me to mess anything up, so all I did was run around in the fairy fountains but wow, did I love it. The last of us, disgaea 2, final fantasy (nine and five, in particular.) I just really Like Games, haha. I can list things for as long as you keep reading them, I think. (Up to and including less story heavy things like tetris - fight me in Tetris, I'm a beast. I'm not even kidding.)

4. Do you have experience with game development? What did you do/with what engine?
I have a lot of experience with a whole lot of different programs! Just enough experience to learn "this isn't what I want either." I'm not quite goldilocks here, expecting perfection, but I do enjoy sticking my hands in different methods and finding out what I do and don't enjoy. Some have been "maybe later" or "maybe for another type of game, but I'm not feeling it right now."

5. Tell us about something you're passionate about!
Oh gosh I think I maybe answered this one above without realizing it. If you didn't read those - I'm passionate about stories. I'm passionate about games where you can relax and be yourself and be in the world and not have to worry about anything else. I'm passionate about stories with families of choice, finding your own home, finding where you belong in the world. I'm also Super Into fairy tales, laughs.

6. What are your goals for this game jam?
I want to make a game (a "game") that at least one person enjoys. I don't expect it to be much of a game. I don't expect it to have a lot of things in it, or to be very long. If I can get just one mechanic in it, that's probably a win. I don't expect to even make a GOOD game, laughs. I'm not here to make a masterpiece - I'm here to make SOMETHING, and then learn something from it. But I do hope that, however clumsy or awkward it might be, I hope that I finish something that lets someone else enjoy their trip into my space of the world and creativity. I hope to finish something at all - even if its just two maps and one encounter.

1. Hi there! What's your name? Want to introduce yourself?

my brand name is PrownieBrownieSoft (real name is Hamza Salih),

2. Did you participate in the last jam we held? If so, what do you plan on doing better this time? If not, what's your reason for joining?

no i didn't join the last jam. the reason i wanted to join the jam is to give myself a challenge to churn out a game, an meet new game devs i suppose.

3. What games are your favorites? Did any of them inspire you, or made you want to make your own?

i have a number of games i really like, mainly SNES games even though i was born after the 90's.

4. Do you have experience with game development? What did you do/with what engine?

i have 5/4 years of experience of game development.

from 2011-2015 i used scratch https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scratch_(programming_language (which many of the games i made, i did not finish and in 2015 i only made game projects as a joke). i mainly didn't take the game projects i made seriously because i wanted to make the "game of my dreams" in C++ and take THAT seriously (even though i never bothered to teach myself C++).

in 2016 i was trying to decide if i wanted to use unity or game maker, which i settled on unity.  after i created my first finished game on unity https://prowniebrowniesoft.itch.io/bownty-hunter i dropped my "dream game" idea in order to make other games. i think that was one of the best decisions i've made.

from then on i started to make more simple games that i actually finish, gaining skills and experience in the process. i am also learning a bit of C++ on the side which unity made easier to learn.

5. Tell us about something you're passionate about!

gaining new skills from game development.

6. What are your goals for this game jam?

to make a simple and fun puzzle game, meet other game developers and gain a bit of  a following (maybe).

7. Any advice to new jammers (if you're a veteran)?

i've only joined one other jam, so i can't really advise you. i suppose you shouldn't avoid jams if you are new to game making, they force you to make simple games with the time constraints.

1. Hi there! What's your name? Want to introduce yourself?

Hi! I'm Nic. I'm currently a university student with dreams of being a game design someday!!

2. Did you participate in the last jam we held? If so, what do you plan on doing better this time? If not, what's your reason for joining?

I did! I didn't end up submitting a game, though. This time I'm going to try to actually submit a game.

3. What games are your favorites? Did any of them inspire you, or made you want to make your own?

I really love the Dark Souls-es and Undertale because of their themes about friendships/relationships. I also really love games like Hotline Miami and 30 Flights of Loving for how stylish they are (and how wonderful their soundtracks are!)

4. Do you have experience with game development? What did you do/with what engine?

I am an expert at half finishing games! I have about 4-5 unfinished projects on all sorts of engines - Unity, LÖVElua, Gamemaker, Stencyl, etc.

5. Tell us about something you're passionate about!

Uh, Videogames, of course! Also loving your friends and tipping your waiters!

6. What are your goals for this game jam?

I get hung up a lot on worrying that  whatever I'm working is "not good enough". I want to just make something and publish and have some people play it for once!

7. Any advice to new jammers (if you're a veteran)?

Here's one: buy some pens and a notebook! Pen-and-paper game design ahead of time will save you a bunch of headaches in the "what-direction-do-I-take-this" department down the road! ALSO! Don't worry too much if your game is good or bad! Those are subjective categories! Just make something and get it out there!!

1. Hi there! What's your name? Want to introduce yourself?

I'm Maxine, I'm going to college in the fall. I love games but I'm also a bit of a jock who loves biking and snowboarding (a jamer if you will)

2. Did you participate in the last jam we held? If so, what do you plan on doing better this time? If not, what's your reason for joining?

Nope, I'm just really interested in making games (it's basically one of my dreams to be a game dev)

3. What games are your favorites? Did any of them inspire you, or made you want to make your own?

My favorite games are probably the Mass Effect and Dragon Age series, but really any game inspires me if it's doing something I think is super unique and cool! My favorite thing of all in a game though is great characters and powerful emotions!

4. Do you have experience with game development? What did you do/with what engine?

A little bit, most of my experience is in Ren'Py and RPG Maker.

5. Tell us about something you're passionate about!

Video games! I love playing them and I love talking about them, if you get to know me you'll find that the more I criticize something the more I like it, because I think it'd be great if something that's already okay or pretty good became great!

6. What are your goals for this game jam?

Make a game? I'm not really sure.

1. Hi there! What's your name? Want to introduce yourself?

Hello, my name is mira. Nice to meet all of you.

2. Did you participate in the last jam we held? If so, what do you plan on doing better this time? If not, what's your reason for joining?

No, actually, I've managed to watch each one of these pass by, as I follow the tumblr page. I think there's been like, 2? or 3? that I've been to scared to participate in, just preemptively getting down on myself for failing to follow through. I finally joined this time bc I want to silence those voices that keep me from trying.

3. What games are your favorites? Did any of them inspire you, or made you want to make your own?

The WindWaker is a big favorite of mine. The World Ends With You changed everything I thought I knew about RPGs. The Metroid Prime series features some of my favorite visual and written storytelling, and I loved that you had to go looking for it. Similar to the Soulsborne games now, Bloodborne being my favorite, that and the Dark Souls lore/worldbuilding/story as a whole are just...fantastic.

4. Do you have experience with game development? What did you do/with what engine?

Nope.

5. Tell us about something you're passionate about!

Shoot, uh,

...shoot.

6. What are your goals for this game jam?

To produce a short story told either visually or through one of the various VN/interactive fiction software.

1. Hi there! What's your name? Want to introduce yourself?

Hi! I'm Michelle. I'm a software developer from WI.

2. Did you participate in the last jam we held? If so, what do you plan on doing better this time? If not, what's your reason for joining?

No, I didn't.

3. What games are your favorites? Did any of them inspire you, or made you want to make your own?

The first games I played when I was a kid were Eternal Daughter and Cave Story (probably because you could get them for free on your PC). I was impressed that they were made by just one or two ordinary people, and that definitely inspired me to try to make games. Nowadays I'm into TF2, the Binding of Isaac, and the Tales games- but I'll try pretty much any game.

4. Do you have experience with game development? What did you do/with what engine?

I don't have that much experience with game development. I took a college course in designing virtual worlds for education, and I made a virtual world in Unity for learning about outer space, and that's the only "real" thing I've done that's related. Sometimes I make really small RPGMaker games.

5. Tell us about something you're passionate about!

Obviously programming and video games, but I have a lot of other interests as well! I love sewing and crafts in general, and I have a small business selling my own stuffed animals. I also really like music, and I like making simple songs with MIDI.

6. What are your goals for this game jam?

To make at least one playable level, and to submit it at the end of this game jam!

1. Hi there! What's your name? Want to introduce yourself?

my name is Yann, i'm french (baguette), i'm a student in electronics and IT.

2. Did you participate in the last jam we held? If so, what do you plan on doing better this time? If not, what's your reason for joining?

I want to find out if i can work in Game dev, if i'm good at it, i'll enjoy it for sure.

3. What games are your favorites? Did any of them inspire you, or made you want to make your own?

i like games that have depth. it can be his story which is interesting and immersive, or his game mechanics that are really complex, i like most games, but for example i will say Zelda, Kerbal Space Program, Minecraft.

4. Do you have experience with game development? What did you do/with what engine?

i'm not that experienced in Game dev , i worked on a game by making my own game engine, this is how i enjoy to do stuff, think about how you can do it, before using something already made.

5. Tell us about something you're passionate about!

Computers, from early i lived surrounded by them, they are facinating, how theses thing have changed the world, and how they are still changing it.

6. What are your goals for this game jam?

find out if i want to make Games for a living, i will be starting new studies next september.

7. Any advice to new jammers (if you're a veteran)?

i'm not vetaran, however even the fool can give forthy advices. don't work alone at a game jam, this is made to enjoy your passion with others before even making a competition.

Bonne chance a tous, Joyeuse Game Jam

(good luck to everyone, happy Game Jam)

1. Hi there! What's your name? Want to introduce yourself?

My name is Samuel Allison, born and raised and still living in England. I'm still in school, but not to cool though.

2. Did you participate in the last jam we held? If so, what do you plan on doing better this time? If not, what's your reason for joining?

No, just heard about this jam from a friend. My reason for joining is that I want to test myself and make a game and have an excuse to show it to everyone on the Internet.

3. What games are your favorites? Did any of them inspire you, or made you want to make your own?

Kameo. The best game on the Xbox 360. I'm hoping I can reference it or use mechanic ideas explored in that game.

4. Do you have experience with game development? What did you do/with what engine?

I have minimal experience. Mainly messing about in GameMaker: Studio (which I will be using) and Unity.

5. Tell us about something you're passionate about!

I'm passionate about getting addicted to lore, and geeking out over computers and anime.

6. What are your goals for this game jam?

My goal is to make a thing that does things. Honestly, I'd be stoked, even if that is all I get done.

7. Any advice to new jammers (if you're a veteran)?

I'm no veteran, but I once heard this on a YouTube video: 'A good dev does not hold all knowledge there is. They know where to find said knowledge'. Basically, if you don't know something, don't be afraid to search the Internet. Don't give up on an idea or mechanic just because you don't know how to get it working, or don't know the code needed.Someone out there will know, and will help you out.

1. Hi there! What's your name? Want to introduce yourself?

My name is Joel McDonald and I'm very into video games and technology

2. Did you participate in the last jam we held? If so, what do you plan on doing better this time? If not, what's your reason for joining?

I haven't participated in any of the MFGJ Jams, but I did participate in a small jam earlier this weeks. I joined because I felt like I fell under the category of a beginner developer, and I felt this would be a great way to better my skills as a game dev

3. What games are your favorites? Did any of them inspire you, or made you want to make your own?

I really enjoy sandbox and RPG games. I felt like Undertale (don't hate) really inspired me to make a game due to the amount of success it got with its minimalistic and, honestly, terrible and inconsistent art style. Minecraft was a big inspiration, too, for the same reasons. It was just one person that turned a small game into something amazing.

4. Do you have experience with game development? What did you do/with what engine?

I have a small amount of experience in game creation, and I use Unity. I have a general understanding of the engine, and I've made a few things in it based on tutorials and such.

5. Tell us about something you're passionate about!

I'm very passionate about music and technology! I feel like both are a good combination when it comes to game development

6. What are your goals for this game jam?

I just want to make something that works and is at least a little bit fun to play.

7. Any advice to new jammers (if you're a veteran)?

Not a veteran by any means :/
