how do you get wood I have an axe and went through the green rock and got the flowers but can't get/find the wood for ether the tavern or the paint stuff? What do I do?

so the only guide in the game from the gnome, is to go the south of the map where the train is, but you still can't cut the trees. so I assumed you had to get a permit from the Drow girl, only there is not permit and I can't cut any fucking wood, therefore can't get my wood off from the gnome lady. Sadge, where's a guide for this game?
