The unique graphical style and presentation is first class.
Unfortunately I am rubbish at platform games and I could not get past the first roof in the fire of london (about 1 screen width to the right). I couldn't get my jump to land on the roof and after about 10 attempts I had enough.
I then tried the plague one and did manage to run across some rooftops but this one was even tougher due to the insta-death rats everywhere.
At that point I wanted to punch the screen which probably means you got yourself a pretty good playformer there :).
One small thing - great idea to have the historical test in game - but it needs to be in quiet bits so that there is time to read it.
It's so ambitious two split the game up in two styles and I think you managed to do that with great success! The look of the game is very unique and it fit this dark part of history perfectly. The only thing I disliked with the actual look of everything was the fact that it was a bit hard to know what was collidable and what what not. There was a fair few times I avoided obstacles because I didn't realise they were actually not - only to attempt to jump through them next time and realise it was a solid. The biggest issue I ran into here was during the top-down sections where I got stuck for quite some time running from the flames before realising I could actually run through what I'd thought was walls.
I managed to complete the fire-part, but I didn't get through the plague-part, where I never managed to get through the first top-down part. I think sadly that the controls during top-down took a lot of pleasure away from your otherwise nice and fun game. As stated earlier, holding "W" made the slippery feeling go away, but for some reason this only worked good enough to play through when escaping the fire, but I never got it working in plague. So sadly, that was very frustrating that the character suddenly acted like it was on ice and slid away into a skull. :< I tried a lot of times but eventually just had to give up. :<
I think overall that the plague-part felt more unpolished than the flame-part, in both ways I've already mentioned. The rats were also a bit hard to know the status of - like the white rats on the roof killed me a ton of times, and therefore I tried so hard to avoid them in the sewers(?) before I realised they were not dangerous there.
But I loved the look on both sides, it felt dark, saturated, old and "uncomfortable" (in a good way! I don't find the exact word I'm looking for here. xD ). And I loved how the story was written as you ran. I think a great addition to that would be to have the text follow the player for a slight distance somewhat, because it was a bit difficult to read when running and trying to time those jumps!
So gameplay-wise, a bit frustrating sadly, mostly in the top-down part, but in all other areas I think you did a great thing here. :D
The artsyle is amazing. It's a proper platformer game. I was surprised you added top-down gameplay too! That was awesome. Great game!
thanks for the feedback. I agree the speed of the flames stops u seeing the facts of the event. They clash abit in terms of what the game is trying to do. Are u susposed to read the facts or avoid the flames? Both can rarely be done. It's a fair point. I think when I was testing the game I got really good at it and it now remains abit too difficult rather than just abit tricky. Really thank you for the feedback and although I like the music I am unsure of it suits the game as well as I first thought! If u get time please check out my other games on my page :) would love to hear more constructive feedback π
Certainly a very good looking game, with a good mood to it. Also, like the thematic contrast between the plague and the fire. I'd say maybe make it a bit easier? Maybe make a hard and easy mode. Might be just me, but I found it tricky to the point of frustration. Also the text on the rat level is quite hard to read so maybe add it as something on the screen after you die? You don't really want to slow the gameplay with text, and after someone dies they can use the moment of downtime and read the interesting facts. Just a few suggestions!
thanks for the feedback. Like the idea of having the facts on the retry page. Such a good idea and may well change that if I get time. Like the idea of a hard and easy mode also. I think I got very good at the game during testing and it's probably harder than I wanted for people who are new to the concept. If u get time. Would love your feedback on the other free games on my page. Thanks again!
Very fun game , your art style is very unique and the fact that you can play 2 stories too.
I can see you have a lot of experience with game dev.
Good job!
I just went and played a bit of Scuba and InkyBoy. They were both very fun and great art styles, I loved the pixely beaded art style of Scuba. I kept blowing myself up and touching the sea urchins in mission 6 on Scuba. In InkyBoy I read the part where it says pizza shows you the way and then don't fall down the gaps. I immediately fell down the gap... Obviously I'm not very good lol
thank you for playing. Inky boy is quite an old 1 and works better on mobile. Good learning for me from that . The night stage of scuba 'darkness' is pretty cool. Enjoyed making that level :) M island took me ages but you'll need an hour ish to get through it all πΉβ₯οΈ thank you for playing tkmπ
It's so beautiful ! The fact that you can play 2 stories is really great ! Visually, one of my favorite so far !
enjoyed playing! the art was unique and awesome! the gameplay is straightforward but challenging, it gives a good arcade adventure vibe, it has great replay value, overall the game was great! congratulations! keep it up!
The presentation for this game was really good!
The gameplay was fairly straightforward. I'd recommend fleshing it out a bit more.
Nonetheless, I loved the theme, art, and music for this game!
Had a lot of fun with this game, I liked how there were two different games in one almost, and the style is nice too, I'm digging the "paper" look of it. It was a bit hard but hey a challenge is never wrong, right? :)
Well done!
