Great great game !!!!

Amazing job with the level design! I liked how you would come across areas where you'd have to remember to come back to later once you got more jumps. The small hitboxes and the sliding corners on platform edges were nice touches in addition to the smooth controls! The art and music were fitting too!

I managed to beat the game after about a dozen deaths haha. I was going to suggest a checkpoint, but after reading Fredspipa's feedback below, I appreciate your level design even more. There was really only one ledge near the end that I found really difficult, so maybe if that area was closer to the starting point, that would make dying there less punishing.

Overall, awesome platformer!

If you get complaints about the difficulty, that doesn't mean there's something wrong with your design. This is top grade level understanding of platforming and level design and all that's needed IMO are small tweaks and tricks to make it a little less frustrating to spawn back at the beginning. Because you should keep spawning at the beginning, that was actually a great choice.

The only thing wrong with the difficulty is the curve, it's just a short game condensed in a short time so how can you avoid that? The world did an amazing job at teaching the mechanics and there is thought to every aspect of the character movement. This is proven in the level design, as there's a puzzle for everything in your skillset. You don't always need to be "nice" to the player, some of the best games ever made thrived on the sense of achievement after a lot of work, they thrived on being "tough but fair".

What many may not notice is all the small things you did to make it easier for the player, the very lenient hitboxes, the super-predictable jump length and height, the order in which things were introduced. Saving moving platform for late in the game, which is such a common and spent mechanic, was also smart. Those were one of the most difficult things to deal with in the game, they threw off your rhythm and forced you to react and improvise, and would only be in the way early on when the player was learning the skills.

There's some butthole-tightening hard areas to get through, but for some reason I rarely died in this game. The controls were airtight, it was 100% down to your own skill and no jank. I have no idea how I managed to get through that "hell" part, but after that I had to walk away from it for a bit.

I love how your own jump becomes the "skip" mechanic, the further you're into the game the faster it is to get back to were you were, even though it's further away and full of dangers. Learning the map was an engaging part of the game, it could have needed some slight variations to the visuals to distinguish the areas (for memory), but nothing too crazy. I don't think you should add checkpoints, but try finding other creative ways of letting the player skip with their skills, , at least only do so if you increase the scale of the game.

I'm going to say that the theme works as well. It's not so much the character that's evolving, but the world and how you traverse it. While nothing has physically changed, it's a completely different place when you're zipping through it on a streak of blue light.

Can't tell you enough of how impressed I was by your design decisions, and I'm tempted to tell you to ignore some of  the comments you might get about your choices in pacing/difficulty/design and go with your guts. They seem to be working.

Thanks you so much, I can say that originally I was planning for optional check point and ability to re:set check point.

But still again thanks you.

You could segment the world into a few key areas and have the player spawn to the closest, just be careful with too much convenience or you lose that sense of being in a hostile world.

This is awesome feedback! I personally had difficulty because 2d platformers are not my kind of game. But of course these design decisions would be great for others interested in more difficult platforming game play!

This was fun and addicted. Nice that you just stuck with the jumps. I tried to make a similar game but did not come near as fas as you. Great done!

Nice little platformer.

It's interesting that you made the upgrades focused on the jumps and ran with it all the way, in a sense this kinda made the level feel like a puzzle cause you have to remember how high can you get with your current number of jumps and backtrack accordingly to find the paths you can reach.

I feel one thing that's missing would be to have the upgrade shrines double as checkpoints, cause it was a bit of a pain to go back all the way to the start and find where you were to progress.

Though i gotta say it's nice that you let the player keep the upgrades after death so that you can indeed find some shortcuts ^^

Other than that, overall it's a fun game and the platforming felt very precise.

Well done :)

For not being my type of game, this one turned out really well. I enjoyed the mechanics and a very nice take on the theme! I am not one for difficulty, so I only got to 7 jumps and got stuck in the diagonal moving area. But honestly very well done!

Thanks you,

I always fear if people can found path after 4 jump.

It is for sure difficult, but I really liked the puzzle of that nature. I found the first couple of jumps to be a bit slow and boring, but the rest were pretty fun.

Some of the spikes had me worried that I will fail the jumps but I was pleasantly surprised about the responsive controls and managed to go past without problem :)

With different abilities, it could turn into a metroidvania :D

Well done!

pretty good platformer, i really enjoyed that one, i didn't get past the moving platforms because the third one that goes upwards is too unpredictable and often not there. the enemy that crosses this platform is also too fast.

and if you make any updates to the game, try to change the player collision shape from a capsule to a rect ;-)

It's a really cute game!

The jumps were very responsive and it was fun to play! However, it's hard to know where to go sometimes and there's a lot of backtracking.

Simple yet fun. The art is really well done.

the game is really good , good art ,good  controls, but the jump is littel heavy i couldn't pass the triple jump  :-:

Developer(+1)

sorry about that,

I already try increase the jump a little and then I ended up can do something that should not be able to

The concept is very simple but is actually very fun to keep getting more and more jumps. Really nice art and music too.

Developer

Thanks you, I really enjoyed making this.

The art looks really good and liked the jumps increases to making different parts of the map accessible like a key to a door but with jumps!

It's the art if you want.

And thanks for playing

I like the mobility, but the difficulty is a little challenging because dying sends you back to the beginning.

Nonetheless, a good game.

The game is hard. Even the ability is not reset but its annoying to have to go back to retry. The control is nice by the way.

I love it! The best, hard, explorable, evolution game. Would be good to see more stories for each piece :)

Developer

thanks you,

And of course,

To be continue . . .

Excellent gameplay! The difficulty ramped very well! Cool that you made this in a week or so!

Developer(+1)

thanks,

I was making the movement on my laptop,

While I designed the platform on my phone every time my laptop died 😂

This was delightful! Beautiful and really well put together tiny Metroidvania, and some really great difficulty scaling. Felt great every time I cleared the next hurdle.

Only suggestions I have is:

  • Could have pushed the "Evolution" bit by having the character grow wings when getting the double jump (perhaps they get bigger with more jumps?)
  • A little indicator on how many jumps I had left.

Fantastic work!

Developer

thanks for the suggestion.

At first I was thinking of wings as well, but I just not sure how to make the wings animation.
