Romance System explanation? *Spoilers*

Hi, So I've just started the VN and I absolutely love it! However I'm having a pretty hard time with the romance system...

I don't mean it in a rude way at all but I feel like it's not very well worked out so far, my issue is with the lack of clear choices or system/explanation to figure it out. For example when we meet the characters we get three separate choices Friendly/Flirty/Uninterested yet even if we choose the friendly options we still get multiple flirt options (Which is fine I'll just not click them if I don't want to flirt) But then even if I never choose a flirt option I'll still get characters trying to sleep with me one after the other or initiate 'Intimate scenes' (The doctors one seemed completely out of left field but I tried to convince myself that was just 'we're gonna die, wanna bang?' kinda thing)

So that left me confused as to whether or not the friendly blue options were more like a 'slow' romance? And the only way to lock out the romances completely is to choose the red options (Which some I found kind of rude so didn't like picking)

It confused me more with the Commander as his romance system seems completely opposite,  we only have one or two scenes with him where we can slightly flirt but then suddenly when we're in the MedBay (Which is I think the 'actual' start of his romance) Our only romance choice is to suddenly be "Falling for him" which both seems way too fast but also makes my character act all giddy and completely at odds with their personality.

After reading a few thing's on Patreon / Other community post's I would also have to agree that the romances do feel rush, I think they're very cute scenes and I love going through them all (Khalil and the Commander are currently my favourite) but considering our character only enters the story properly in Chapter three I feel like it's far too soon to have them have intimate / falling in love options, especially if this story is going to planned for several episodes that span for a few hours as the description says.

I do understand that the romances aren't the main focus of the story, (Which is completely fine, the main story is incredible on it's own! :) ) I just hope this doesn't follow some other visual novels as some out their simply add romance for the sake of it which ends up bringing the story down as a whole

Alright! There's a lot to unpack here! <3

So yeah, the options can be broken down to friends, friends with benefits/lovers and kind of "meh, it's you."

The characters should NOT be able to trigger intimate scenes if you never flirted with them, and you're absolutely right: The "we're going to die, let's live without regrets" setup was an intentional and plausible reason to remove any relationship obstacles to intimacy without having it feel rushed. (–In my opinion. It's interesting that you mention it feels rushed to you, several people have voiced the same opinion, while several others have claimed that it's way too drawn out, and then several others have mentioned it feels perfect. Such is the ways of internet feedback.)

The friendship option still shows the flirting options to simulate the whole friends to lovers dynamic, but if you never pick a flirt option, you should remain JUST friends and intimate scenes won't/shouldn't trigger. Initially the not interested option functioned the same, but I had to change it as some players were legitimately frustrated, especially when they were doing a playthrough as a straight male for example, and continually kept seeing the flirt options despite choosing "not interested."

If you have any specific scenes that felt out of place for you character's personality, please let me know (you can do so on our discord server), along with how you feel your character would have reacted in the situation. It's not always possible, but sometimes it is and I love to add fixes like that, even if they are done retroactively. You can talk to several of our other fans, adding choices/content like that happens more often than you think!

The romance options were added due to market demand. I've always believed that Infinite Stars should have a strong story, even if you were asexual and not interested in any romantic options, and I feel I've achieved that to a sense. I also feel that the romance options are little stories on their own, running parallel to the main story, and that the free version of the game (without any intimate scenes) should be able to give a full and wholly enjoyable experience without having to pay anything, while still rewarding the super fans willing to support the development of the game with something special and extra (the intimate scenes.)

Part of my original design document states that there will never be any crucial main story plot developments that occur ONLY during an intimate scene, as free players won't be able to experience it.

I'm quite excited for the content we're currently working on. I hate building hype, as it's so easy to overhype something, so I'll try to cone across as unexcited as possible: With Veera's intimate scene(s) we've been working on, she has a whole story arc how she changes as a person, with each intimate scene slowly chipping away at her masks and revealing the woman inside the assault armor. Veera will still be Veera, but you'll have a better connection and understanding of her after going through her various intimate scenes. There are also some scenes which are 100% fanservice scenes that aren't taken as serious. (Sometimes it's just fun to write (and play) silly yet hot romantic kissing scenes to take a break from the tension of the story!)

There aren't any professional aspirations when it comes to writing Infinite Stars. I break TONS of writing rules deliberately because it shouldn't be a chore to me, and it's not trying to be anything else than what it is– a fun hobby. It started as a hobby, and I sincerely hope it stays that way. There is so much planned story in my head, and the day when there are no more new ideas or if it's no longer fun to write is the day that I'll neatly wrap the story up.

Apologies for the ramble, it's been a day and a half for me! <3

Yeh, it was also a bit weird for me that this somewhat stoic, confident person that arrived on the ship turns into a stereotypical schoolgirl when observing the commander in the generator room and then even more in the medbay. xD  I guess part of the disconnect may be that, regardless of your personality and core tendencies, you can act different with different people?  Like I felt like the captain kinda steamrolled me when I left the medbay to get me to the meeting, and I figure it was because I had done "submissive" actions in private moments with others, but how you act with certain people can be different, you know?  Or even just how you act at work.  Or just because I thought the doctor had a point, that didn't mean I was necessarily submissive otherwise.  This is probably extremely complex to simulate, though!

I always loved the way things worked in the "Our Life" games, but those always had so many choices and ways of responding.  Not sure if that's even feasible for a more plot-based game like this.  Maybe it's just the choices/choice nexuses?  There do seem to be a toooon of personality traits.  It's bound to get tangled.

I did enjoy the more "natural" fliting options, ones where you were just kind of sensing if the other person liked you, too, but I felt like not every route had those.  I don't really think you can determine what kind of relationship you want to have with someone just upon meeting them. xD  May be more accurate to ask if MC finds them attractive?  That could help with a more gradual and natural ramping up, for people who want that.  I mean, I'm sure there are people who jump into things immediately, but I feel like people kind of go for the vibe check first. xD  I also did find the fact that the commander was "confessing his feelings" over comms was a little intense for how seldom the characters had spoken up to that point.

Enjoying a lot though, thanks!!
