About this event

The GMC Game Jam is a 5-day game jam: a competition that tests your game-making skills by giving participants(solo or team) a limited time to create a complete game based on a theme. As this is our flagship semester-ly game jam there will be prizes and industry judges!

Fun

Is the game enjoyable and engaging to play? How much are you entertained when playing the game?

Creativity

How well does the game play off of the theme? Is there anything that feels unique in the game’s idea or execution?

Aesthetics

How effective and appealing are the game’s graphics and music? Does the game have an established and consistent style/theme?

Gameplay/Narrative

How intuitive and smooth are the core mechanics of the game? Are they cohesive when put together? OR Is there a compelling narrative?

Immersion

How well does the sound design and music match gameplay? Do you feel like you are able to fully immerse yourself in the world of the game? Is there anything in the design, UI, or general feedback that breaks your flow?

Rules

Basic Rules

  • Game Submissions are done through itch.io
  • Any game engine can be used
  • Any art assets, audio, and code can be used, as long as you have a legal right to use them.
  • Generative AI art and music is not allowed.
  • Games must follow the theme, but it can be interpreted in any way you'd like.
  • If you are found cheating (including tampering with ratings) you will be disqualified.
  • The game should be suitable for a general audience, so please avoid strong language and excessive gore. And your game should not contain nudity, or hateful language or visuals.

Voting Rules

  • Once the deadline passes, submissions will be ranked by players based on the given criteria.
  • Only players who have submitted a game can participate in ranking other games. (Be sure to add all team members as contributors on itch so you all can vote!)
  • Voting continues for roughly a week before results are finalized in our showcase.

Prizes

  • Judges' Choice: $100 AUD
  • Judges' Most Creative: $50 AUD
  • Peoples' Choice: $50 AUD

Theme Submissions

  • Date & Time: Monday, 27th July
  • Info: Submit your ideas for the game jams' theme in our Discord!

Theme Voting!

  • Date & Time: Thursday, 30th July
  • Info: Vote on submitted ideas.

Opening Ceremony

  • Date & Time: Monday, 31st July, 5:30pm to 8:30pm
  • Location: Malaysian Theatre (B121), Glyn Davis Building
  • Info: We will start off with a presentation going over rules and how to submit. After that we will begin the theme announcement which is decided by spinning a wheel of the top 3-4 voted community submissions.

Jam Starts!

  • Date & Time: Monday, 31st July, 6:30pm
  • Info: Theme announced and you can start developing your game! Free food will be served at the opening ceremony.

Saturday Work-In Spot

  • Date & Time: Saturday, 1st August, 12pm - 5pm
  • Location: Room 101, Alan Gilbert Building
  • Info: Come in to discuss you game with your teammates and develop collaboratively!

Sunday Work-In Spot

  • Date & Time: Sunday, 2nd August, 12pm - 5pm
  • Location: Room 101, Alan Gilbert Building

Jam Ends!

  • Date & Time: Tuesday, 4th August, 11:59pm
  • Info: Submission deadline for games! There will be atmost a 1 hour grace period for submission or compilation issues.

Voting Period

  • Date & Time: Wednesday, 5th August to Sunday 9th July
  • Info: Vote on all the games in the jam

Showcase and Closing Ceremony!

  • Date & Time: Monday 10th August, 5:30 - 7:30pm
  • Location: Room 158, Chemistry West Wing
  • Info: Come and show your games for everyone to play as you play everyone else's game! Our judges will give a few honourable mentions, and then we will announce the winners and there will be food for everyone!
