Welcome to the DIY Engine Jam!

This jam is for developers who want to build games from scratch, write custom engine code, or use lightweight, non-mainstream frameworks.

If you prefer coding your own render loops, wrestling with framework math, or avoiding commercial engine bloat, you're in the right place.

Banned Engines (The Big Commercial Tools)

To keep the playing field focused on custom tech, you cannot use major engines:

  • Unity
  • Unreal Engine
  • Godot
  • GameMaker
  • Roblox Studio / Construct 3

Allowed Tech & Frameworks

Anything custom, self-made, or lightweight is fair game. Examples:

  • Custom Engines / Code: C#, C++, Rust, Zig, Python, Java, or D (DirectX, Vulkan, OpenGL, WebGPU).
  • Libraries & Frameworks: Raylib, MonoGame, FNA, SFML, LibGDX, LÖVE2D, Bevy, Macroquad.
  • Niche Engines: CopperCube, Cocos, DragonRuby, PICO-8, TIC-80,and other.

Rules

  1. No AI-Generated Assets or Code: All code, art, music, and audio must be made by human creators. Generative AI tools (ChatGPT, Midjourney, Copilot, Suno, etc.) are strictly prohibited.
  2. Platform: Your game must run natively on Windows (.exe), Linux, or in the browser (HTML5/WebGL) so everyone can play and rate it.
  3. Pre-made Assets: Non-AI pre-made models, sound effects, fonts, and textures are fine as long as you have the license and credit the original creator on your project page.
  4. Teams: Solo devs or teams of any size are welcome.
