Hello everyone, AxleByte Studios here!

Sorry for the ugly cover art but it's the best I can do right now. If any artists or illustrators would like to help me with it, let me know!

What is this all about?

After a bit of brainstorming, I decided to follow through with my new game jam idea, and it is set up in February. This gives participants ample time not only to set up their working environments, but also to learn how to use ASL—my game engine.

Because ASL is modular (i.e., games are built from self-contained and executable units of code), it is possible to create mega projects where multiple teams develop their own modules and, once they are ready, these modules can be joined together through an integration process.

What about the game jam?

The objective is to create a community project similar to WarioWare in which teams create at least one module, each of which lasts between 6 and 8 seconds.

Through a non-competitive voting system, the modules that are the most creative, funny, and engaging are linked together to create a game that is posted on Itch.io under the name of IUWare: Orange. Not only that, but if there are a lot of submissions, it is also possible to make multiple games under the same name.

Teams who gets their modules integrated in the final game(s) are credited. Still, any team can post their own modules to their personal pages, even if not integrated in the final game(s).

Finally, the game jam's theme is published two days before the jam starts.

How does it work?

When the game jam starts, I provide teams both the "main" function and the basic game structures. Each team has 18 days to make one or more modules, for a maximum of three submissions per team.

Modules are accepted only if they meet the following requirements:

  1. It is a mini-game and lasts between 6 to 8 seconds.
  2. It does not feature any content that is NSFW, illegal under EU laws, break Itch.io TOS, gore, and other content alike.
  3. The mini-game does not adhere to the theme, it is not fun to play, it is a low-effort work, or does not pass basic debugging/QA tests.

Teams can only be made of, at most, four members and, while AI is not allowed, AI-as-LSP are still allowed. The game organizers are up to help any user in need. However, questions that are easy to search up won't be answered.

The game jam uses the Go programming language and the ASL library can be imported using the "go get gitlab.com/axlebyte-studios/go-asl" command. To be able to use it, teams must download the SDL2 library which can be found in the GitLab repository in the ASL's README file.

Developers can only use the ASL game engine, Go-SDL2 bindings, the Go's standard library, and any library in https://gitlab.com/ilzrkr group. Using any other library is not allowed and will invalidate the submission. If an external library is needed for whatever reason, it must be approved by the game organizers.

You can find the game engine here:

https://www.gitlab.com/streamforce/libraries/asl

Lastly, the most voted/liked module is picked to be the game's boss mini-game.

If you'd like to join as a member, feel free to do it. I also need to set up the game jam so, if any artist, music producers, or others would like to help with cover arts, game assets, music, SFX, and others, let me know!

Of course, people who contributes to the game jam are not allowed to join the game jam as a member to avoid conflict of interest.

But that was for animators, I want to make one for game devs.
