  • This is a great start as a first game, and if I was giving suggestions I'd say to focus on the new player experience. The game was a little confusing at first, and control was unclear. As a fellow web dev, I like what you've done without an engine :) Seemed to fit the theme.
  • The game works well with what you have, it's not too complicated to get used to, and you did a good job of informing the player how to play the game quickly without it breaking the immersion. It was an enjoyable experience overall. I would work on sound mixing a bit more, as some of the effects were a bit oppressive and jarring. Adding in some different attacks from enemies would add layers of difficulty because once you level up yourself enough the game becomes pretty easy. Though good job on adding some variety to enemies. Some form of indicator to let the player know they are being damaged would be helpful to provide a visual cue of damage.

Did you include your Game Design Document as a Google Drive link?
Yes

Seriously... did you include your Game Design Document?
Yes

Is your game set to Public so we can see it?
Yes

Tell us about your game!
It's a top-down survival where you kill monsters, upgrade your character and survive for as long as possible. Default controls are WASD & Mouse, but keybinds are bindable.

Extra Notes
This game was made without an Engine, I used my Web Dev knowledge to force Web Dev tools into Game Dev.

Once I got the hang of it it was a pretty fun experience trying to get a high score! The acceleration in the player movement was the thing I would change the most, I kept bumping into monsters and losing HP. Also please add zqsd as a movement option. As an AZERTY Keyboard user, this was a really challenge to adapt too :)

Crazy you made this without an engine man, nice job!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback <3

I do think you missed the bind-able key-binds in the settings! ;)

Holy! I'm so used to game jam games not caring that I didn't look! THANK YOU (wish I knew it sooner)

Feels like the monsters are too fast to evade effectively. It also seemed like they were spawning very slowly. Seems like there's more game here but I can't get past the beginning. Good job though! keep making games!

Developer

Thanks for playing!

You could grab some speed upgrades early on to evade the monsters more effectively. :D A regeneration also help a huge amount!

Mob spawning chance is also based on amount of upgrades * distance from spawn, When in range of the crafting portal no new monsters spawn.

I do agree this should be communicated more clearly! (Currently there's only 1 line mentioning it vaguely.) I plan on adding all feedback in after the judging period ends. <3

Amazing what you were able to do using only web technology! The game feels really good to play and the graphics and ambient sounds really build an atmosphere. Great job!

So I got the laser beam. Killed 2771 monsters. Was told to go outside.

Honestly, this is a very fun game. The style is great, the mechanics are easy to understand and give the player the best kind of overpowered feeling as you gain stronger and stronger buffs. A ton of fun.

What really holds this back for me is that, at a certain point, you really have to TRY in order to die. The game doesn't have a lot of content besides killing the same monsters over and over, and at a certain point, that can get boring.

On a purely technical evaluation, this game is a marvel. A game made without an engine for a game jam is something I never expected to see.

Overall, I thought the game was very fun, and would love to see more added content in the future.

Gave it like 10 tries but it gets so hard so fast I could not gather even 10 coins to buy another upgrade.
I see the idea but rn its in a rough state at least for me, sorry...

Developer

I Appreciate the attempts anyway.  :D

Difficulty currently scales on distance from the portal and amount of bought upgrades.

If you have any suggestion to deal with the difficulty balancing let me know, I've had comments on both ends of the spectrum.

I plan on continuing it's development after the judging period and am taking all feedback into account. <3

Ohh!
Let me try staying close to the portal then :D

There is no indication that being further away from the portal makes the game harder but that would help a lot!
Maybe some kind of slider with the danger icon on top (eg. Elite Monsters in WoW have that dragon frame)?

Edit.
Ok staying close to the  portal made me realise one more thing.
Since there is no background I did not know I am moving slower backwards. (that is was was killing me)

+Cool visuals +I really like the base system for upgrades.

-There is only a game for like 2 minutes, after that you get so overpowered that there is no actual interactivity beyond that. No bigger monsters, no end goal.

It feels like a good alpha for a bigger project, all the ideas are solid but there isn’t much to do(especially compared to what people have come to expect from this kind of game).

I can't even begin to imagine the stuff necessary to create a game like this, with no engine. The performance is stellar, too. Despite there being literally thousands of enemies being spawned all on the same map at the same time, I didn't suffer lag a single time!

It's a simple and fun roguelike where you can become the eldritch horror of the eldritch horrors with your all powerful laser beam and past-light speed movement. It was fun just collecting a bunch of coins and pushing through the numbers, seeing them get higher and being able to simply delete enemies out of existence. Though it did get a little bit loud, so eventually I had to stop because I got scared of blowing out my earphones.

If anything, I'd suggest some sort of power up or trait where the character is able to act like a magnet and gather the coins that are around him in a certain range. It felt sad to see so many coins lost after I destroyed so many monsters at the same time.

This is really nice for a first jam game. No softlocks, no game-breaking bad glitches, and the game-breaking that you CAN do is really fun to do and experience. The one detail I'll mention is that, once I was done with my run, I wanted to reset my character but a couple of odd things happened:

- My character started walking on their own, almost as if they were being pulled by something;

- The reset button didn't work.

So I guess that's my life now. An immortal, all-powerful, eldritch horror of the eldritch horrors, wizard.

Cool game!

This was fun! At first I was confused by the movement mechanics but then I realized mouse position also matter for how the guy moves. Once you get used to it, you can really zoom around! The are can get pretty disorienting once you get away from the portal, since it is kind of empty, but it is also cool/trippy. It would be nice if the shot started to look more powerful, or have a bit for feedback on hit.

Still, well done!

This is a really fun game! Even though it's a simple premise, the atmosphere is very tense and claustrophobic and the rumbling growls in the darkness are terrifying. I love the variety of powers - and if you survive long enough, you can become strong enough to hit a turning point and power through the enemies. Well done.

Managed to create a black hole of enemies, Definitely a fun play :)

stunning visually, cant imagine the dev process was fun w/out an engine XD

The game is really fun to play, but only if you understand that you move faster in the direction you’re facing (I got it thanks to the commenter below).

Without understanding this, the difficulty curve is very steep at the beginning, since you most likely will fall into a trap of shooting an enemy and running in the opposite direction. And most enemies will outran you like that. If would be easier to get if there was some visual feedback like dust particles, or at least if the background didn’t move with you.

I think it would be better if enemies with more health, especially the biggest blob enemy, spawned less frequently in the beginning. In my first ran I got the big blob as like second enemy and just couldn’t outdamage it.

Another thing that I wish was improved, or better yet added as a stat in upgrades, is pickup radius. It’s quite hard to pick up coins in the beginning because mobs stand over them, and in the end because there are just too many coins and they despawn too fast.

Overall, once you get a hang of it, the game becomes incredibly fun, and you quickly become unstoppable.

At first the "enemies spawn away from the portal" and "you move faster in the direction you are facing" mechanics are confusing, but once you get used to it it becomes really fun. The game progression is a bit too exponential though, after just ~28 upgrades I became a enemy-deleting-fire-laser, and after 80 I became practically immortal.

A cool and fun game nonetheless.

Finally got to sit down for a proper playthrough. I think the first time I never realized how you move faster in the direction you’re facing xD

Genuinely super fun, well balanced (up till you get that broken build point, which I always enjoy) smooooth performance, seriously well done.

I think you could have max level for powerups and then have synergies at the top so getting the broken build feels slightly harder but just as insane and rewarding. Lean into your amazing performance and make that the spotlight by doing crazy vampire survivors stuff!

its a good game, i liked it! there are several upgrade options that can be obtained from time to time, and i like upgrade games

Submitted(+1)

Sounds fx a lil harsh, but otherwise a neat game that's easy to get into.

also, protagonist name reveal - he's literally a  "magic-dude")))

Submitted(+1)

Its a really fun game with interesting concept. What is most impressive to me is that it was built with Web Dev tech. As a Front End dev who also loves TS, hats off to you on the game. You did an incredible job!

Submitted(+1)

Fun game, nice work, I'm Godlike.

I got virtually immortal by picking only speed movement, so to easily fix my immortality you could put a faster enemy after a while.

If you work on the background to give some sort of reference, and enemy speed you have a good going game ! GG

Submitted(+1)

Great game, played it way too long 😄 Few things: background offers no point of reference for where you move, early game is a bit tough with coins despawning so fast, late game get easy fast - but it’s very fun & rewarding to get that powerful! Overall, well done!

I heard this is how you’re supposed to play it… 🤔

Hey, it's crazy you made it with JS, I bet it took a loot of work and it's very impressive for what it is in a technical level.

That said, if you were going to stick with JS, probably an interface based game would work better, like an idle, a clicker, a management game, etc.
