My name is Daniel Serrano Robles, and I'm a master's student from Mexico participating in an academic research project on video games and history. Beautiful choice of music! Lots of nifty features hidden in the nifty UI - I just couldn’t figure out how to rotate the boat! Some instructions would have helped (adding different values into the different control inputs didn’t do anything for me). The different things you can toggle was really nice. What especially felt cool to me was that I could see what Franklin’s route was on the same map, and the different things you could toggle to see or not see, if you wished to. Great work, thanks for the entry!
Yeah lack of prompting is really bad... Anyway, to change the direction, first, left-click on the ship to select it (a box bound the ship), then press D to enter the direction selection mode. When the unit is selected, click on a point on the globe, and the ship will point towards that direction (the arrow will change). If this direction is blocked by land, the ship will not move even after changing direction.
It's crazy that you used the entire globe to map the arctic! I like the gameplay, really feels like you're exploring an unknown part of the world. Only realized you don't seem to actually crash into things halfway through, and it made the game less challenging. Would be cool to get some hazards. Nice that you can name the ship, and how much control you have of the experience.
This was cool tech experiment! I think the actual controls need to be a bit more touched up though. Making sure the ship is selected, pressing D and then clicking somewhere to set a new direction felt a little over-engineered. I also didn't have the best conception of the space my ship was occupying, which became less of an issue through trial and error. Neat project overall, and cool seeing other people inspired by Sebastian Lague's fantastic projects :)
Your use of the map was really nice touch. At times the game wasn't responding the way I felt it should. I was spamming D trying the get the direction to move, and it did eventually, but I don't know why it worked then and not before. Congrats on finishing.
Do you select the unit before pressing D? In the original game design, the map will contain numerous units (ship and land teams). Therefore, direction command will only be issued to the currently selected unit.
I think so, it has a solid red box around the ship when I was clicking D. I'll try it again later and see if im doing anything wrong.
Maybe my control description is too ambiguous... To be explicit, pressing D will enter the "finding destination" state. Then, left-clicking on the map will determine the "destination," while the previously selected unit's location determines the "source." The great circle arc is determined between these two points, and the initial direction is given to the selected unit (it's the initial direction of shortest path on a globe).
As professor of geospatial data science, I greatly appreciate the use of GIS :) I really like how you have taken the theme of the jam on board (no pun intended) and delivered a historical well-accurate submission.
