I really like that the health indicator is shown through the feathers on top of the chicken’s head—it’s a creative touch!
That said, there are a few things that feel frustrating. Bots can shoot through walls, and there doesn’t seem to be a cooldown for player's shots, which makes combat feel overwhelming(in bad way). Enemies can also shoot from offscreen, which can be hard to react to. The arrow key controls don’t necessarily make movement easier since you can also jump with the Up arrow, which feels a bit unintuitive. You could make A W D movement keys, and SPACE to shoot will be much more easier to play. Additionally, in the last stage, enemies fire shots while falling (respawning or whatever the mechanic is), which feels unfair. Also add menu key, so player can restart game without refreshing the page.
Overall, I don’t think this game is very beginner-friendly. I did manage to defeat the boss, but I didn’t quite understand what changes in dark mode. With some balancing tweaks and clearer feedback, the game could be much more enjoyable!
Thanks so much for playing until the very end! And thanks for noticing the feathers as a life indicator heh.
This and other quality feedback is what makes submitting to these jams worth it — adding all of these to my todos! (a) cooldown for player shots, (b) enemies can only shoot while onscreen (I used distance as a proxy and that turned out to not scale well with different screen sizes), (c) AWD movement + space to shoot, (d) enemies can only shoot when they touch the ground, (e) menu key.
Ran out of time for the dark mode haha — the rough idea was that once you know you’re a robot, you unlock upgrades, more weapons etc. as a starter, I’ll probably just change the default weapon to something more powerful once you beat the game
Sounds awesome! Glad to hear my feedback was helpful.
This is amazing, most original idea, most fun gameplay, most polished game overall. and you did this all by yourself. It even has cool story. This is amazing.
now to the nitpicking.
I was stuck for quite some time on the last checkpoint because i did not realize enemies were respawning, so i was trying to clear them before getting to boss
enemy bullets feel very unfair, first they go trough walls (so does players but still, feels unintuitive) second and this is what makes them very hard to avoid, the camera is centered so there is not time to react. it is considered a good practice to move camera ahead in direction of movement to give player reaction time
and game hanged after i tried to start it after beating it.
but that is really nothing compared to how good this is.
Really appreciate the kind words, annd thanks so much for playing until the very end!
These are great points, and I added them all to my todos: (a) I’ll make respawning clearer (eg they pop in with some animation, (b) I’ll stop bullets at platforms so it’s not as crazy and more sensible, (c) I’ll advance the camera to be slightly ahead of where the player is going, hasn’t realized this was happening in most platformers but now I can’t unsee it! (d) I’ll look into the hanging restart. I haven’t seen this before but given how jank my code is, I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a glaring issue LOL
Thanks again, this is invaluable feedback.
Great game. I love it when a game lets me have an infinite amount of something so that I can try to break it.
LOL lemme know when you break it — I’ve never seen how far you can go…
One among the best games in the jam, very well made game.
Thank you! :D
Very well-made game!
Thanks so much! LOL yeah I spawned a biiiiit too many enemies near the boss, thus the bullet hell. And good point! I initially wanted the ghost army to build satisfaction but I’ll have to consider ways to make it necessary to strategize. 🙏
Thanks so much to everyone that's played!
Good graphics and visuals. It was fun to play and think how best to go and sometimes you just had to go and spam the attack. But there is 1 minus to shoot at x is not very convenient)
Haha yeah, spamming attack is the way to go. And that's good feedback :P Will have to change shoot to space and jump to up/W!
Good job. Especially the graphics. Very stylish!
Thank you! :P
Nice game , nice art. Wishing I could shoot with another key other than x because the players arms are occupied with WASD keys. The position of the shoot key made it difficult to finish the game but the game is awesome.
Thank you! :D And yeah, good feedback -- I'll have to change movement to AD, jump to W, and shoot to space. 🫡
Tackling the boss as a swarm of my dead ghosts was a really cool concept that I hadn't seen before. Visuals are clean but still convey personality. Nice work.
LOL thanks so much! That's a pretty fearsome swarm of dead ghosts
The game can be interpreted very deeply on philosophical level. Loved that about it!!
It would have been interesting to see how the gameplay would have changed, if you went crazy with the idea of your past selves helping you.
For example, say you need to fly to a platform and you can jump once. But can you let your past selves stack on each other and then climb. idk, just thinking of random ideas xD
But all in all, such a nice game! Loved it!
Thanks so much! Haha that's an awesome idea -- and I will definitely think about that more deeply, about how to use ghosts in more clever ways. :p
In case you haven't played it, you should try Celeste's mirror temple mechanic. It might give you some inspiration for the upgrades. But again, really loved the concept. If I can think of more ideas, I will definitely share haha xD
Cool idea with the past incarnations of the player. A little uncomfortable shooting on X, but so very cool.
Thanks so much! Haha yeah, Ima make space shoot and up arrow jump instead
Had a great time playing.
The art is really well done and fits the game perfectly. Awesome work!
Thank you! :D
Neat little concept, there's another game with a similar concept but the shooting platformers takes it into a different direction. I had trouble with x being the shoot button as opposed to LMB but i got used to that while using the arrow keys as opposed to A/D. Super Polished & the really dig the monotone art style. The take on the theme is also interesting as the general conspiracy is that pigeons are not real but robots but this is like reverse conspiracy haha
Thanks so much for playing! And controls are a recurring oops, heh. Based on your feedback, I'm thinking I'll (a) say to use arrow keys in the tutorial and (b) use space for shooting. Reverse conspiracy indeed LOL
That was really fun to play ! :D
i was able to beat the final Boss (the father ! xd)
i love the art style, and the sound effects, reminds me of the game cup head ! :3
Though i noticed that if you jump while moving directly into a wall, the bird will get stuck on that wall.
And if you died fighting the final boss, but your clones killed the boss, the game will spawn hundreds of robot birds and get you a massive lag for a few seconds, till the game clear the area, and you won't be able to replay the game as well because of the lag (require refreshing the browser page).
Not a big deal but worth mentioning :3
Overall, great job !
Thanks for playing to the very end! And comparing it to cuphead is a very big compliment :P
Many thanks for the feedback too -- the wall is something I need to fix (maybe you slide down instead?) and I had no idea you would spawn bajillions of clones hahaha oh my goodness (maybe I check that the player is alive when the boss dies). Added to my todo list, and will fix both of those!
It was a really fun game.. Enjoyed playing this one...
The past selves helping you to take down enemies was a good addition....
Woooo, thank you for playing!
