I liked this game. The environment, especially the destructible parts was really cool.

I’m not very convinced about the spelling gimmick in its current form. I think all it does right now is force you to remember 3 words and keep switching between mouse and keyboard. Also, because the game is turn-based, there’s really no tension to it. I’m not really sure what would make the spelling game for the spells fun while keeping it turn-based. But it would require some sort of challenge. I think in its current format it would do better with three more buttons for the three types of spells.

Exploring was fun though, and the map was about the right size and right complexity. I was getting a little scared about getting lost towards the end though. But then I stumbled on the goal. However, I encountered a bug which prolonged my playthrough with about 15 minutes. The destructable walls are indestructible if there’s loot on the floor of the tile!

So pacing was entirely upended for me thanks to that bug, but still I liked the game.

I always like games with alternate spellcasting systems and this was a lot of fun. However, i was never able to get past the fireball firing enemy.

Developer

Thanks! Even I found my own game challenging so its okay :D

Balancing the difficulty in a game was never my strong suit.

One of the games in the jam that encompasses the spirit of jams: try something unusual. While the spell typing was a bit fiddly and I had to remember to use the correct interaction every time, I must say I really enjoyed exploring through this dungeon, finding all sorts of hidden corridors and whatnot. There was something very enjoyable about how it was all crafted, though it really could use some polish to make it better if the intent is to expand it post game jam.

Well done!

Developer

Thank you! :)

I love breaking walls and finding secret stuff in games so I wanted to include that. I'm glad you liked the layout as well! I was not sure if my level design was good enough - although I myself liked it.

I was a bit nervous tho because since I made 8x8 tiles the "window, iron bars" tile is too dense to be able to look through clear enough to see the forest outside. I did not anticipated that when I started the development / made the art...and later I didn't have enough to switch tile size nor I wanted to scrap the 8x8 tiles.

As a non native speaker I am not sure if its a good idea to let the player type out the spells. It could create a language barrier for a lot of potential players. Could be that I am wrong on this.

After some polish this could turn into quiet an interesting game. Looking forward to an updated version.

Developer

Thanks! Didn't consider the language barrier, might be a good point.

Fun game with nice style of art. I liked the game and the idea however had few problems like it took a while to find the breakable wall and the Fireball enemy felt too brutal. I had a bug where casting just was not working at all despite having mana, i was typing the spell then pressing cast but nothing happened, also would feel much better if I could press enter.

The style of the game looks very nice and it makes it good to play. I like exploring the game because of how it looks. It also has a good atmosphere to it, I think if the problems are fixed it could be a really good game. Good work on it

Developer

Thanks!

Interesting game! I included it in my compilation video series of all of the games from the Dungeon Crawler Jam.

Developer

Thanks for playing & gameplay :)

I really liked the comprehensive heads up display and the idea of typing your spells to cast them is great. I think getting the enter button to work would improve the snappiness of the combat. The enter key could also act as a hotkey to start casting a spell (like enter ->  type spell -> enter again). Great work!

Developer

Thanks! Some polishing will be done after the jam ends :D

A solid little entry! I had a great time with this one. Some minor quality of life things would elevate this to the next level:

  1. I don’t feel like typing the spell added to the experience. For me it detracted.
  2. You cannot break walls if there is an item in the tile, this had me confused for some time
  3. The cracked walls are hard to see

If you would like to watch my playthrough, you can find it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjD1Fqqm90M&t=360s

Thanks for playing!

Feels like the typing feature is really a "love or hate" thing. The bug where you cannot press ENTER to cast it is a really big QoL issue. Somebody recommended using ENTER for both: focusing the input to quickly cast & cast the spell which would be even better I think.

Nice game!

The game looks great and the world you traverse is very nice. The typing off spells though doesn't do much for the game imo. It would have been better to just have them as separate buttons to click. If you want to go down the typing game route you need to implement the Enter to submit, but I still think there will be a weird contrast to the exploration going back and forth.

The fireballs enemies cast are very unforgiving. The game plays fast so its very easy to just move twice when exploring and get hit by two quick fireballs and die and have to start over. Maybe the player could get some hint that someone is about to attack, or just slow down the game enough to make that obvious. Not sure whats best here.

I didn't figure out a way to equip any of the items, so I assumed they are equipped by just being in the inventory, and that its part of the balancing of the game by only having those 6 slots.

I struggled a while in the beginning to find the second wall to break. I basically went around hitting all walls until I found it. Next to the doors there are something that looks like buttons, and I spent a lot of time just trying to figure out how these buttons work to open the locked doors.

A Really Nice Entry!

Developer

Thanks for playing!

I think a "find your spells by typing" system, maybe hint based, would have been better but I had to settle with this due to time constraints. It's one of the reasons why there is no ingame information about the available spells - nor any kind of main menu.

The missing ENTER was a really annoying bug even for me when I did some last-minute testing.

Items are equiped by default when picking them up. I forgot to write this down in the description :D

After an exhaustive search, I finally found the egg.

A few days ago  as we where trying to record a chicken sound with my brother we were joking about ranking the games by best chicken sound and I am happy to say that you won and that I am now going to send him a link to your game. This mage chicken spelling an incantation is my favourite chicken joke in the jam, it's just awesome. The chicken looks pretty cool too by the way.

And the game is pretty fun! The visuals are consistent, the music is great and the game pretty much resolves on lethal, instant, turn-based (sure you can dodge fireballs in real-time) gameplay with some resource management inside a very good dungeon given all the paths and breakable walls, which is my kind of things.

Whatever path you take or items which get dropped you're going to end as an unkillable warmachine which is both boring and satisfying in the same time.

You can't drop pieces of equipment, only consumables, which can be a problem. Many enemies don't move or at least don't follow you when you take a corner or something like that. Finally fighting doesn't work where there's an item  (can't remember if it's when it's on your tile and/or on the enemy's tile, also maybe only melee fighting doesn't work).

Super cool!

Developer

Thanks for playind and for the review, sharing the game!

I really hoped I can nail the look of the chicken wizard since I don't draw profiles / faces that much :D

Found the egg!

Definatelly need list of spells in game to play it... Found scepeter and shield and with shield I could just melee everyone away - was quite OP :)

(there is no description on decorations btw, when I tried to interact with them they would say 'attempt to interact with ." Also you interact with things on your tile even if you not seeing it - was especially visible when you would dig the big room out - you will not be able to dig a wall, unless you picked up a potion first)

I liked the entry a lot. Spell casting with bawks was funny. It simple, but has a lot going on it and aestetics  are spot on and perfectly matching. Love this game :)

Developer

Thanks!

I think I forgot to handle the cases where you want to interact with nothing :D

I thought it was a bit hard at first, because I didn't read the gamepage to get the spells.  I assumed I had to experiment or collect them on the journey.  Somehow I onced over the page during the playthrough and still didn't see them. 🙃

After I read it properly, it was a fun brisk crawler.  Especially on my winning run.  The RNG showered me with potions. to burn.

Playthrough in a min.

Thanks for playing + for the gameplay videos, I'm glad you enjoyed it! :D

I forgot to write some stuff down in the description at first and usually my eyes miss some details both in my own written stuff and also other jam projects so don't worry... I think I might have been better off with a "tutorial" button that shows everything in a scrollable page. - Tho last time I did that, for a card battler game, it didn't make much difference.

I enjoyed this and got all the way through! I liked the old school graphics, tight movement and the casting mechanic was funny with the squawking chicken noises. I had fun exploring, finding secret destroyable walls and fighting the monsters. I saved the egg!

Needs some strafing and some of the items were tough to differentiate due to the blending in with the background from the small tile size, but a minor complaint overall.

Overall fun entry!

Cool game. I loved the casting sound effects when typing. It was fun expolring and discovering new parts of the dungeon.

Very cool little game. I like the squawks you make while you type in a spell. Breaking down walls has really satisfying sound and visual effect. The game feels a bit cramped with the 8x8 pixel tiles and I would have liked to have strafe movement on A & D. The music is probably my highlight - very nice work.

Developer

Thanks! :)

The game was pretty cool, but I wish it had a mini map ’cause I had trouble finding the door. The grayscale color makes it hard to see the cracks in the wall too. I really liked the animation and the blood on the screen. The music was spot on, and I love the chicken cluck sound. But none of my spell inputs worked, even though I only got to level 2, lol. For just a week of making the game, you did a really good job—I liked it.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! :)

I've used mostly grayscale because I wanted to use brighter colors to emphasize things, like the red eyes of the cultists or the golden aura / sparkles around the egg of light + I wanted to try myself at making grayscale pixelart.

I forgot to mention it on the game's page that you have to push the cast button on the UI to actually cast the spell because ENTER is not working. I couldn't spend that much time with development as much I wanted so I was in a bit of a rush at the end leaving some annoying bugs like this.

Altough I'm not sure what exact spell you tried. fire / fireball / fireblast (not available on level 1, tho its just a stronger meele "fire" spell) should work.
