just starting a thread for anyone that wants to share wips or talk about their progress or struggles for the day. this is my progress so far for KILL ALL KINGS.

  • music and SFX done (but have to figure out how to get it to run during dialogizer / if I want it to and when to leave it as "the silence before kings")
  • two cards (opening and first) done
  • main color palette established, will continue to refine and embellish
  • have some misc. trad art I did last two days at work that I can add and revise in decker
  • waiting for writing momentum to arise, kind of just rotating thoughts atm (ambition/obsession/long game tactics/fluffy comfort that makes everything worth it/trauma/violence/dehumanization/strategy games like mahjong and go)

what did everyone do today? anything you're proud of or frustrated about? (anything I could help with?)

(+3)

i havent started any work in decker yet, but i have started writing out stuff in my sketchbook

gonna spend the evening working on writing a bunch more, dont have too much right now

some concept art of the main character, very loose outline of what i want to do

there's a part of me that's worried that my writing will be rough and bad since i don't really have much of any experience writing but i'm not gonna let that stop myself

Submitted(+3)

happy to help you resolve any writing stumbling blocks and wrote up a resource thread that can be read here as well for beginner writers and you can ask questions in that other forum thread too!

it's really good to get into the practice of finishing projects even if you "think they're shitty" bc they help you measure growth, ones that you see to the end that you can look back on as chapters in your creative timeline. nothing helps develop as a writer and a dev more than finishing smth.

lots of ppl "get stuck/discouraged" in the middle and never complete anything, so completing smth at all is an incredible accomplishment and skill of its own!

(it doesn't rly matter if one half of a project has stupendous writing bc no one can rly experience the whole thing until it's done and released.)

as far as being confident in writing goes, the emphasis should be on just getting it done no matter if u end up feeling like it's bad writing. maybe so, but you can look at in the future and use it as a goalpost to watch yourself grow!

(+3)

i saw some of that resource thread in here and it was very helpful to read! thank u for typing it up

and yeah, i find myself struggling a little bit but im doing my best to ignore the me that says everything is bad, just putting stuff on paper and i'll let myself edit it later

it's good to have something as a starting point

the most any story can be expected to do is exist!

HostSubmitted(+2)

Another thing I have to add to this myself…..You don’t have to create a literary masterpiece or something for people to still enjoy it and have fun with it. Enthusiasm is enough, presenting some fun ideas to think about is enough, really X) And like Swanchime said as well, finishing projects is absolutely the best way to hone your craft. You will be able to learn from each one in some way or another.

Submitted(+2)

yeah!! u rly don't have to aim for like making a Masterpiece(TM), people are more than happy to get a decent and ordinary story and have a good time! I saw in the other thread that you're aiming for a trans allegory? as a trans person I feel hopeful that something about it will resonate with some other people's own unique trans experiences.

Looks so cool so far! Im actually. uh. Kind of already almost done with mine lmao (stuck at home with chronic illness atm so not much else to do :P) Here are some cards from it. It’s called “I Always Dream of Falling.”

the edits were me trying to fix the images being skewed omg

Submitted(+5)

ooh it's so interesting how you position the characters and text boxes, how you have the downward vertical cascade and the colorful card that's upside down is so inspiring in terms of dis/orientation, I was thinking of doing a similar upside down illustration!! or smth like that.

incredible that you're almost done!! will you submit another one or just call it at that?

HostSubmitted(+2)

Hehe thank you!! Also lol yes knowing myself I probably will make another one before the jam is over.

Another thing, tangentially related, I think it’s so cool that you’ve been so active in this little jam community forum! I definitely did not expect much activity to happen here but I have been pleasantly surprised :> …I’m so happy to know people have felt so engaged with and inspired by this jam!!

Submitted(+3)

yes I'm so happy to be active in the forum!! I'm glad it's not annoying haha. good luck with finishing up and starting anew!

Still early days for me. I've got a plot structure for what scenes/choices I want, and I've started on some character art, but writing is still pretty early and I haven't done any backgrounds yet. Plenty of time left, hopefully on the weekend I'll be able to get some stuff done though.

Anyway, here's the character portrait for my protagonist

HostSubmitted(+3)

Fun haircut hehehe…..I had a cut like this myself once and I think my hair’s a little too thick to really make it work but this character is rockin it

Submitted(+3)

agreed!! great haircut

Submitted(+2)

I've got all my character designs done (although haven't done like the blinking/talking/different expressions yet, likely will look at that later), and I've been making a start at writing and some of the background art.

Speaking of which, here's sort of a cutsceney bit of background art

Submitted(+1)

you choose a really good color palette!! the linelessness of everything looks great too

Submitted(+1)

I've used this palette a lot before, it's this one on lospec.com https://lospec.com/palette-list/pastel-horizon

Submitted(+1)

oh nice thanks!!

Submitted(+5)
  • finished another card
  • figured out how to get jankytunes playing across cards AND during dialogizer
  • selectively chose to create silence upon clicking dialogizer during this card for maximum intensity
  • added new brushes to decker and new transitions
  • did some quality of life minor fixes like allowing arrow key navigation AND having SFX/transition button options
  • designed my game page
  • adding new thematic motifs and thought of more (butterflies, maple leaves, peach blossoms, spider lilies, uguisu)

(+4)

didnt get anything done today...

but have a plan to write in my evenings after work this week

then ill see where i am from there after the work week, maybe start getting to making the deck and implementing some text/making graphics on my weekend

HostSubmitted(+5)

As of typing this, all I have left to do is draw the end card, finish coloring most of the cards, and design the game page, and then my entry is complete ^_^ So at some point within the next 24 hours it will likely be posted lol

Submitted(+6)

Hehehe this is my first game jam, and my first time using Decker! I love learning new coding languages and pieces of software, so I've basically been spending all my time messing with Lil and dialogizer. Wrote up a text formatter script that will take the stuff from the first text field and turn it into the second field (character name with proper font, and a command for changing the text sounds and such). Not sure how necessary this all is, but it was fun to make hehe. At the very least, it lets me change up the fonts of the dialog whenever I want without needing to go back and edit lots of dialog.

With this is place, I'm starting to write up dialog for this game! Hopefully I'll get some character sprites in soon as well so I can properly test out puppeteer and such.

(PS, I love how artistic everyone's games look so far!!)

HostSubmitted(+3)

WOAHH This is super cool!!!

Submitted(+4)

woah!! smth like this might be really handy for me if you're willing to share it with a little explanation, if that's okay! this is so so cool!!

Submitted(+3)

I would love to share! I'll see if I can put together a lil showcase of this (since it's a little Involved when it comes to setup) within the next couple days.

Submitted(+2)

hooray!!

Submitted(+3)

Super cool writing a formatter script like that, if it's something you're able to share I think it'd come in handy! I know I've spent a lot of time manually tweaking fonts in some of my stuff, haha! Looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

Submitted(+5)

I think I'm going to start a new short palate cleanser decker vn based on the joke meme of don't look at my b*n*r when we fight about trans asian sword lesbians, just a romantic comedy(?) to clear my head no thoughts head empty from the extreme tension of KILL ALL KINGS.

I'll see how far I get after work but that's what I'm thinking!

(+6)

a simple screenshot of one of my characters (belah!) talking to the protagonist before she's sent off to explore the room. my irl bestie had to remind me to record what i intend to do....... the reminder was very needed. i often just jump in and rely on my own memory (Not A Good Idea!!!)

though it just has the wip filename right now, the title is "the end is yours"

(sidenote i am trying so hard to add this image Please be kind to me internet)

Submitted(+5)

that's a really good title! i'm rly interested in the way that the hair stipples at the edges because of the brush you used, it looks super cool. the white on black bg is so striking when it creates facial features, like chalk. nice job!!

Submitted(+8)

Hi didn't find this topic until now. A few days ago I made Ross. He's like my son please be nice to him. The whole scene with him is done, it didn't take too long. I love him.

I've also made a map where you click on different areas and it takes you there, and you talk to a guy and it'll be fun, I actually really want feedback on it, it feels kind of overwhelming and maybe there's something that could be done better? The areas you click on are not implemented yet besides one where I still need to add the dialog. I haven't been very productive compared most other projects I do.

Also everyone's projects look really good so far. Someone mentioned submitting another game and I didn't know that was a thing so from the beginning I've planned a single large one that would take advantage of the long deadline and I'm not changing that plan now.

Submitted(+5)

Your art is so fun! Nice to meet you, Ross.

Submitted(+5)

Thank you!

Submitted(+3)

wow! your backgrounds and stuff are so detailed! :O good use of textures!

treegravy is almost done with one and said another one is planned!

and yeah I'm making one main game (KILL ALL KINGS) and then a side nsfw game (WHEN WE MEET IN HELL (let's pretend we don't know each other)) as a palate cleanser from the tension in KILL ALL KINGS where there's not necessarily a lot of words but every one is precious and just writing more prose-like traumatic/erotic narrative instead of the implicit word-restriction of smth more poetic, like KILL ALL KINGS. I hope to finish the side game just in one shot today? I'll be reusing some assets (all made this month! from KILL ALL KINGS).

not sure if I'll finish KILL ALL KINGS this month but probably will, though if I don't I won't rush it. would like to have smth submitted though!

(+4)

was able to get about a page of writing done after work today, whether the writing is good or not.... well, what's important is that i at leasr have something written and i'll work on that from there

i feel silly posting text only updates... but soon ill get some decker screenshots in here !!

meow meow

Submitted(+4)

text only updates are still good!! nice that you got some writing done, can only go up from here!

(+7)

when the jam started i made a bit of progress on one idea i had, a sort of serious and personal story, but after a few days of not really touching it i realized i didn't actually like the idea very much (or at least, the idea of actually having to write it, haha) so yesterday i decided to just throw out what tiny amount of progress i had and instead start over with a much more lighthearted idea. that idea being that there is no idea and i'm just making it all up as i go along depending on whatever i feel like drawing whenever i reach the next card. which is proving to be infinitely more engaging for me to work on so i have a good feeling about it haha

Submitted(+4)

the most important thing is to have fun with it!! there's no point in making any kind of "masterpiece" if u feel like shit tier level while ur working on it. i'm glad ur feeling more engaged and good about it!!!! (interesting art style, cartoony figure!!)

(+2)

may the whims of creativity guide you with whimsy and joy

Submitted(+6)
  • decided not to stress about deadline, if i don't finish i don't finish but it motivated me to start which is enough! this jam motivated me to start TWO whole decker visual novels which is rly good for me! so i decided to take it easy, it's ok if i don't work on it everyday
  • picked color palette but still depended on only two main colors (sob) and am not used to using more than one color. maybe for future cards
  • this is going to be (designed with the idea/intention of being a short prosaic nsfw game but might become a larger project than that...already thinking about using the chat contraption...
  • this is the first work i've done w/ my duelists who are butch x butch sword lesbians
  • didn't do much today (yet)? but not sure if i'll stop here for the day or not! not rushing myself though, and there's still smth like 20 days left, so who knows

Submitted(+3)

This is so stylish.... wowie.

Submitted(+3)

thankies!!

Submitted(+6)

Hey. I haven't 'officially' joined the jam, but I've been following for the past few days now and started work on the story and some cards yesterday.

It's my first time using Decker so nothing will be too spectacular from me- never minding the creative block that's followed me since the start of the year, lol. I'm just kinda vibing as I go. We'll see if I'm able to finish in time to submit!

Submitted(+3)

good luck!! that's such an interesting black and white choice screen!!! :0

Submitted(+5)

Hiii, I have made quite some progress today. I drew sprites for two whole characters, and a backdrop (very wip still) of a café. I think a good chunk of the game will take place there (not sure yet, I haven't done much planning, I'm going with the flow here...)

I also wrote some dialogs and scripts for a little scene! it was supposedly just an excuse to see if everything was working well together (puppeteer and dialogizer etc.), but i think it will end up in the final project. Meet Saya! she's your crush :)

Submitted(+3)

aww she's so cutey

Submitted(+3)

Oh wow I am loving the art style and I'm excited to see how it turns out!

Submitted(+1)

This is looking so beautiful....

Submitted (1 edit) (+5)

My idea for the jam revolves around some old characters of mine that I've always wanted to make a game for. Since their designs are already monochromatic, I felt they fit the aesthetics of Decker quite nicely! Been working on character sprites, and I really like how they came out. Because I can't control myself and like a good coding challenge, these are all "fancy" puppets.

(tldr on the story. the witch, hyperion, is trying to exorcise/bargain with/study a demon that's possessing a priest. somewhat scary premise, but i plan on it being fairly comedic hehe)

Submitted(+2)

Ooooh! Fancy puppets! :O

The style of this looks fantastic.

Submitted(+3)

Thank you! Yeah, with the pt module, fancy puppets are very useful when you wanna have more complex puppets heheh. Like maybe different faces, body positions, hand positions, etc.

Submitted(+2)

this style looks really great!! I love the placement of the portraits over the bg character too, great ui sense

Submitted(+2)

Heheh thank you! Yeah I made the bg character first, since in the game you're playing from Hyperion's POV interacting with the priest. But i just had to include sprites for her and her cat too, so I put together the portrait sprites. I'm happy the UI looks good so far >:)

Submitted(+2)

oh that's cool!! u have a rly strong art style and visual direction!! is the priest from a fictional in-world like magic religion?

Submitted(+1)

ty!! and nah, its just (probably inaccurate) fantasy catholicism hehheheh. priests using swords and holy healing spells and stuff like that to literally fight demons.

Submitted

ohhh I see!!

Submitted(+3)

Hell yeah Fancy Puppets! I've not yet been game to experiment with them but I am excited to see how you're using them! This is looking so great!

(+1)

love how this looks !!! super cute

Submitted(+2)

oh wow it looks great!! I love your style :)

Submitted(+5)
  • set up the itch page
  • finalized color scheme
  • redesigned and renamed main character (cynosure wren, more of a girl-prince type than i was expecting! still he/him trans girl though)
  • changed lop bunny to tall ears bunny ear so they're more visible and cuteyer
  • the new color scheme makes everything way more legible
  • just focused on color and design so far today
  • story changed a lot, ended up being a bit of a palace politics entanglement with a long lost prince (without a fairy tale's heraldic return) who is talking to his rival from his fe3h style war academy days and they both talk about dueling again for old time's sake and also the fact that rival (named cormorant who wields the cursed uguisumaru sword, nicknamed "issu" by cynosure) is going to be married off in a pawn marriage by his warlord father, and cynosure talks about also being currently an available bachelor and being sent to visit the warlord's manor by royal decree to "find a wife" (the emperor is clever but dull-witted in some matters, assuming that cynosure's attention will be @ cormorant's sisters). cynosure Will definitely find a wife, but who it is may surprise her...

Submitted(+5)

I've only made a little more, worried about it not being a visual novel enough. The UI looks more like a point and click, and there should probably be more text. I'll see if I can find a solution.

Here's Eddy Retro, he's kind of an ass.

Submitted(+3)

Eddy Retro is SO CUTE!!!!

(+2)

the spring allergies really killed my momentum on writing

but thankfully, i think the worst has past? hoping to get a finished first draft before the end of the week, abwehhh

Submitted(+2)

good luck!
