I definitely plan on it! No matter what changes I decide to make to the gameplay, I’m not starting over anymore or anything like that. I’m taking a short break right now, but I plan to make another devlog video soon to show more of my progress. ☺️ Because even with the gameplay struggles, things have been coming along great in all other aspects, such as with the art, story-writing, and music. (edit: fixed typo)

Yes, now that I understand how it works, I think it makes a lot of sense. It seems like a really cool and practical way of doing things, and it makes me want to try to get more ambitious with future Decker creations. :-D

Wee hee hee. I am working on yet another submission. I really wanted to use a body font that looked fancier than the default body font, but I couldn’t find one that wasn’t either too large for my purposes, or too complex for use in large walls of text. So, I made my own. You can get it from this deck on my website if you want it, and here’s an example of what it looks like in action.

Yes, thank you so much! What I hadn’t understood was the concept of creating additional widgets within the same contraption purely for the sake of holding variables within them; maybe that should’ve been obvious, but my prior coding experience is entirely self-taught, so I end up missing some pretty basic stuff sometimes… After trying to build it again with this in mind, it worked exactly how I wanted it to. image.png image.png

(note: Even if there is another contraption out there that someone’s already made that does exactly what this does and more, that’s nice, but I don’t care about that right now; I want to know the solution to this problem so that I can learn how to script things myself.)

I feel really silly for asking this, but for whatever reason, I cannot for the life of me figure this out. I’m trying to make a contraption that will draw colored text on a colored background using a canvas, because I’m working on a project where I wanted to add a bunch of text boxes all formatted in this way. Just effectively plain field widgets, except they can have different background colors. Using the Decker and Lil documentation, as well as referencing some other pre-built contraptions, I managed to get the contraption set up with custom attribute fields that can be used to edit the contents, and all of that. However, when I placed my contraption, filled in the attributes, then tested it, nothing happened; it remained as a blank canvas. When I went back to check the attribute fields, the values that I had just put in were also completely gone.

I’m assuming the problem is that I’ve failed to “grab onto” the values put into the attributes somehow in the contraption’s code. In trying to fix this, I have been trying to use the “get” and “set” functions, assuming that maybe I have to use those to grab the values entered into the attributes first. But to be quite honest, I don’t really understand the difference between them at all. I saw that the keyword itself of “value” in Decker scripts references the data of non-Canvas widgets, such as a button’s “value” being a boolean for whether or not it is pressed, but I was confused as to whether or not this applies to the attributes, and/or referencing them?

Also, in Decker’s documentation, I see both “value” and “val” being used seemingly interchangeably? Are “value” and “val” two ways of writing the same variable, or am I misinterpreting this, and “val” just its own variable being used and set for tutorial purposes?

(edit: to clarify, the code I note as working in a card script was also just copy-pasted as is into the contraption, with the reference names for the attributes substituted into it)

Super excited to see this developed further!! I will definitely be keeping up with this ^_^

YESSS i was really hoping someone would submit a game with a furby character LOL!!! I really love the art in this!

This is so adorable and unique! I really really enjoyed this!!

SOOO CUTE!!! Your style is so beautiful! Thanks so much for participating!!

The old artwork is now all available for download on the NOEN website’s new extras page.

Send me a friend request on Discord (my username is just treegravy) and I’ll DM you a late submission link!

Feel free to use my art for pfps! I will upload a .zip file to the NOEN website containing all the art and game assets I had made in the original style once I re-upload the alpha there. ☺️ This folder will even contain graphics that never ended up being used, such as the non-placeholder enemy sprites, and both battle and talk sprites for the bosses Alice and Conflict!

Decker VN Jam community · Created a new topic Hi

Nice jam you got here. I somehow psychically knew it was happening despite also having no idea it was happening until ahmwma told me because i happened to make a VN in decker for the first time in like a year right within the time frame of this jam. So i submitted it. Also i honestly might make another one that’s a little bit more substantial in contents because this is reminding me of just how fun Decker really is to use

Yeah… I used to really hate rendering art until I had started doing the old painted style. I ultimately made the change to the new style because the painted style is naturally just so much more time-consuming, and simplifying the style was a sacrifice I decided to make for the sake of trying to ensure that I actually finish the game (since creating more art in the painted style was something I was dragging my feet on quite often). But, I’ve been thinking recently of how I could still continue to use it every once in a while. In fact, the painted style also had ended up inspiring me to want to learn how to paint traditionally. So, maybe I could try to recreate that style traditionally, and then have traditionally painted artwork for things like prints, posters, etc. I feel like that could be super cool and unique.

WAAAAA THIS IS SO CUTE!!! Thank you!! I’m so happy you liked the game!!

Oh my god. This is it. This is The Plushie Yuri. I honestly wasn’t even sure whether or not anyone was going to submit anything to the jam in the end, I worried that the concept was too niche… and then this beautiful piece came in.

I think I just might have to make this jam a re-occurring Thing. I realized vaguely, amidst all my own ideas for what to potentially make for the jam, that the concept actually gave quite an interesting basis for explorations of emotions just like this, of longing, and loss, and loneliness… I’m not sure if I can even fully articulate in words how much I loved this.

Clearly the potential of Plushie Yuri is far beyond what I was imagining. The Dolls have so much in their hearts.

AW 🥹 so glad you’ve enjoyed it so much…

Thank you!! It’s been through quite a lot since this version that’s been uploaded here lol, and I’m waiting for it to be in a more stable state before showing any more of it again. While I feel it would be a shame to take anything related to it down now that it’s up, in retrospect, I think I may have shared it at a point too early into its development.

However, over the past couple of weeks, I have been working on it more passionately than I probably ever have. I’m hoping that my current vision for the game will end up really becoming something special. While most of it will still be very familiar to what’s already been made public, I’ve been spending all this time trying to refine everything into a much clearer creative vision, and I think it’ll really be worth the crazy development journey it’s gone through in the end.

(To give an idea of what I mean by “crazy”, the game has been started over from scratch over 10 times, across five different engines, and cycled through at least six different genres… 😅 All in pursuit of trying to figure out the ideal way to tell its story, which has also been constantly evolving. Although, thankfully, scope creep has not been an issue; in fact, the scope has only been getting smaller and smaller as I’ve come to realize which of its elements are most important.)

Yes! The jam has been extended recently. :)

OMG i just saw the trailer for this on YouTube and it looks so awesome… Will definitely be keeping up with the development :D What engine is the game being made in, if you don’t mind me asking?

I think you should add graphics settings, and a way to disable/separately adjust the volume of background sound effects (such as the gong), but other than that I very much have been enjoying the experience of being a Girl Ball. 11/10

Where can I add friends? :o (i have my account connected to discord and everything)

Hello! Happy to have you! Feel free to ask if you have any questions~ :)

I’m really really intrigued by this story! I think my only real critique is that there’s a lot of terms and things being infodumped all at once (particularly towards the very start), which makes it confusing to follow at times. I had to reread some things several times to make sure I got it all. But, regardless, I found it all super interesting, and the character dynamics portrayed are super fun. I’m already hooked and will definitely keep reading if/when you decide to release more of it. ^_^

I was hiking up a mountain. I asked the guide how far up we were. She said “The V in Vampire Stands for VVife.” I smiled. That’s how I knew we were at the peak

Soooo adorable!!! <33

Thank you!! So glad you liked it!! <3

Thank you!! I actually have one too (idiopathic hypersomnia). Wanted my fellow sleepyheads to feel seen X)

WOW!! Thank you so much! I’m so glad you enjoyed it!! <3

This has now been fixed. d=(^_^)

Really?! That’s strange. I’ll look into this. Thank you!

I realized that some people might not want to make a new thread just to leave a comment LOL. So, here is a thread that you can reply to for leaving general comments/questions/feedback/etc.

Nice to see someone else talking about not “writing scared” when it comes to representing minorities one is not a part of, LOL. I am also a very strong believer that it’s better to take the risk and just learn from potential mistakes than it is to cower away and try to keep everything sanitized.

I had realized when I was first working on writing projects and getting friends to beta read them that, a lot of the time, even if you fail at what you were trying to do in your writing, people will still generally be able to tell what you were going for. Like you said, I think it’s usually pretty clear when the creator of the Thing has any genuine empathy towards the characters they’re representing or not. That really emboldened me into writing about a lot of things that I originally worried might come off as insensitive or offensive if I messed them up. I have gotten increasingly positive reception from friends and randoms alike the more heavily that I have leaned into writing “risky”.

(edit for clarification: taking the risk =/= going in uninformed of course :P)

(decided i have more to say lol)

It made me really happy to read that you felt so passionate about your work for the jam in the process of making it. I always have such an endless, ravenous need to create and create and create, always working on projects and becoming utterly consumed by them (although some of that last bit might be a result of hyperfixation lol.) I think every artist needs to feel that way about something they’re making every now and then, at the very least. It’s just so rewarding to be able to see those creations come to life. So knowing that the jam was able to instill these kinds of feelings in people is everything to me.

Super cool post!! I’m kinda busy this week, so I was gonna play all the entries next week. But, honestly, since the jam isn’t super big, and since Decker projects aren’t that long, I was thinking of doing some little shoutout about every project in the jam rather than picking a top five. We’ll see how that goes, I guess.

Either way, I’ve been so happy to see how much the jam has inspired everyone. ^_^

Hi! You can shoot me a friend request on Discord (username is treegravy) when you're ready to submit, and I'll generate a late submission link for you. As mentioned in this post I just made, I have also extended the late submissions deadline to two weeks instead of just one.

(1 edit)

Hi guys!!! As you know, the main jam submission period has now concluded. Like I said in the rules, I am allowing late submissions. I have extended the deadline for late submissions to two weeks (now until 12am ET on June 30th).

If you want to submit late, you can add me on Discord when you’re ready to submit (my username is treegravy) and I will send you a late submission link. Additionally, if anyone wants to join, I have a tiny little server that I’m trying to curate as a chill hangout space for creatives; I originally created it as a spot where people could keep up with my own work, so there are channels related to that, but you don’t have to be particularly interested in my work at all to be welcome ^_^ Note that the server is SFW, and you must be 18 or older to join. https://discord.gg/8mqSGbrkQG

Thank you everyone for participating!! <333

**edit: Reminder that you must already be entered in the jam to be eligible for submitting late!!!

SOOOO ADORABUBBLE ROZE Your style looks so cool in Decker too :D
