I love the art-style and the overall vibe! Fun game, and great implementation of the jam's theme!

The only feedback/suggestion I have is maybe make the map a grid and mark the already explored spots. On the other hand, though, maybe it would make it less intriguing .

Anyway, great job!

Developer

I'm glad you like it, thanks for the suggestion!

This is fantastic, Wobble! I love the art style so much, the whole look and feel of this game brings me back to the old NES RPG days. Gameplay really feels like exploration with trying to discover different parts of the map. The music is fantastic and really ties everything together. I'm so impressed this was done by one person, you should be very proud! One of the more polished entries in the jam!

Developer

Thank you systemeffect! This means a lot to me, and I'm glad the exploration came through as intended.

Wow This the best game I played during this jam yet. The theme is on point, the graphics is stunning, the gameplay of a RPG in a jam context is insane to manage to pull this off at this quality. Great job! I would like to have more audio feedback during questing but compare to the amount of work putted into this for a single week this is awesome. Congratulation!

Thank you so much! Your kind words are much appreciated.

This was Awesome! I got a score of 98/5

I found the spirit sword and plate, is there a helm somewhere i missed?

Spamming Z got slightly annoying, maybe you could let players hold it and simulate a press every .25ish seconds?

Really fun entry, nice job!

Developer

One of the best scores shared yet, congrats! Yes, the game definitively needs something along these lines to reduce spamming. There is indeed a head piece hidden somewhere within the game. Thank you for playing!

I love it! The music is really groovy, the sound effects are nice, and I love the extensive use of dithering. The music reminds me of sequenced music on some late 90s game consoles, maybe some romplers/rompler plugins were used in the music production? Really nicely done!

I initially explored randomly and found myself dead at the desert...and the temple...and the village...and the jungle...

Then I found the beach and realized you can farm crabs for Crab Meat and stats, spammed Z for a bit and cracked a bunch of crabs and took their meat and shells. Got enough to buy a spear and some armor. Tried to fight the desert spirit but realized I didn't equip my new purchases, but I still got destroyed even with these upgrades. Died a couple more times and the shell loss bummed me out but I eventually got enough for a fishing rod, got some fish, and then on day 74 and at level 5, I defeated a desert spirit.

Started to farm those for a while, got some more fish, then made my way to other parts of the map I died at before. Got to max level, and I got the golden key, thought it would be used for the waterfall, but I entered the pyramid. Got a high score of 123 days and 6 deaths.

Really excellent project, great job!

Developer

Thank you for playing and sharing your journey! I'm glad you liked it. Yes! You heard right, I used an emulation of the SC-55 mk2 for all sounds of the music.

Delicious entry! Impressive effort, the game looks and sounds amazing from a production value standpoint. Very solid, consistent, polished and beautiful. After spending a month on the beach on a crab meat diet, I expanded my ambitions meeting the grim reaper 11 times and losing a lifetime of savings. I grinded my way out of poverty killing wildlife and slowly grew my arsenal, discovered misterious places and items and farmed desert spirits until I maxed out my character way before time. With the underworld emptied of desert spirits, I slain and disemboweled the beast. Wearing a suit made of spirits, now extinct, I faced the final trial storming the pyramid. Best 130 days of my life. 10/10 would visit the shipwreck and find the Giant Crab on day one again.

I was hungry for this kind of exploration/adventure games given the theme and yours went above and beyond simply delivering. Well done!

Awesome! Much appreciated. And big thanks for sharing your experience with the game, it's very fun to hear the different adventures people went on.

Great job with such an ambitious undertaking! The art, feel, and sounds are superbly done.  I really like how the pixel art clearly conveyed what the user was looking at.

The grid based map isn't very evident, the threshold for moving to the next cell could probably be tighter to remove a little of that initial confusion.

We had a good discussion during the stream about how to handle the random number generation.  as in how some systems use a card draw system, or others pick a number in a range and then roll through the range looking for it.  You could also set up separate generators for everything but that might be tedious.

For continued development, it would be nice to see some additional encounters per area.  Maybe not necessarily fighting.  Something to give diversity to the early game grind and give the player a feeling of more agency in how to have fun for that section of the game.

It was mentioned during the stream there is different content further into the game.  When I have time I'll head there off stream and try it out.  I'll update on here when I do.

What an awesome entry. Super polished and amazing idea that captures the theme perfectly. I got killed by a snake 5 times in a row trying to get fruit which was a bit annoying but other than that it was very fun

Developer

Thank you! The early game definitely needs some tweaking based on the feedback I got. Plenty of good lessons were learned...

This was fantastic! One of the best made games I've played so far! I didn't even realize how nostalgic I was for this type of game. Great job!

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks a lot! I love the old school aesthetic and I'm happy my work can trigger some of the things it makes me feel in other people too.

Love the game! Never could find the key to that chest behind the waterfall

Developer

Thank you for playing! There is a hint for the cave key for players that reach the end without it. So if anyone really wants to find it, just know you may not need to explore to do so!

Love the text based adventure feel! Very old school and nostalgic. The binoculars map selection was also super well done, and the graphics fit perfectly! Had to farm crabs on the beach to avoid getting beat up in the jungle ahaha. Adventuring truly is dangerous! Great job ^^

Thank you BuffBakery! I'm glad you like it

I should of known there'd be a troll at the bridge waiting to clobber me and take all my shells XD

Game has a nice retro feel, deciding on when im ready to tackle any of the points of interest has a good curve to it, once you get over the initial realization that those villagers were not kidding about dangerous the jungle can be.

Developer

Thank you for playing and for the nice comment!

Very well executed game. Art and music are fantastic and the core game play loop is super tight. Didn't get to finish the game but loved the parts we played.

Developer(+1)

Thanks again for playing the game!

I think you have done a really good job with this. These types of games aren't really my thing but the game feels really well made and I can tell you put a lot of time into it.

My advice to future players: make sure you farm crabs on the beach for a while before going anywhere else (besides village shop)

I think that we needed some kind of indication on the danger level of different places before we go to them, at the start I seemed to be getting destroyed whenever I went anywhere. Also I feel like I needed a bit of direction at the start as to where I should go first, or what my goals are.

I like how the map works and how many different areas you can go to, Its really cool that you have a save system as well

Well done ^.^

Developer

Thank you for the nice words and feedback. I hope dying wasn't too frustrating. Did you find the village info useful? It does advise players not to go too deep early on. I'm sure some will miss it though.

Submitted(+1)

Dying wasn't too bad as it's not super punishing. I don't remember what the village said, I just saw it as an item shop. It's probably my fault though because I tend to blast past text in games haha

Submitted(+1)

I suffered most death early on and had to grind but I ended up getting caught and finished the game. Solid game with a chill ambiance.

Developer

Awesome! Thanks for playing

fun game! Love the retro feeling

We had fun playing this. Good job on the retro feel. I agree with the other comments on wishing for a way to speed things up when repeating them.

Thank you for playing and sharing feedback!

Love the retro style! Reminds me of some of the old games I’d play on my old Super Nintendo.

Also nice work on the saving feature, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a web export that saves your progress like yours does.

My only gripes are that I wish I had an option to have the text fill in all at once instead of letter by letter, and I wish I had more stats I could view. Enemies seemed to have speed but I wasn’t sure what mine was. Those Snakes are ruthless early on.

Developer

Thank you! I totally agree with your gripes. I didn't include speed in the interface because it was already filled with info, but maybe I should have put it in anyway. For info, energy is the stat that determines speed.

Submitted(+1)

That absolutely took me on an expedition, it took me 113 days which I assume is not very good lol.  I really loved the nostalgic visuals.  Also game felt great, I never got tired of the clacky sound of the text typing out.  My only 2 small grips are I wish the battles would resolve automatically, since I was spamming the x key constantly during combat, and also it would be cool if there was a fog of war and you were revealing the map, because I didnt understand it was actually a grid until very late in the game.  Awesome awesome work!!!

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks! I am glad you stuck at it and found the ending. I'd say it is a good score for a first play through. I wanted to encourage exploration and days stacks up quickly while exploring.

I had a text speed option in my feature list, but couldn't get to it due to time. I think an option for automatic combat, and your fog of war idea would be great additions. Thanks for the feedback!

Submitted(+1)

Really fun idea! I loved the art style and UI, especially the dark brown background. Do you happen to know what the font you used was? Really loved the title + text font.

The systems were really solid and remind me of tons of old adventure games. I do feel like the spike from danger II zones to danger III was pretty steep, but not at all insurmountable. Nice work!
