A cute, simple little platforming game that kind reminds me of mario sunshine. Very much expected game jam jank, but it's intresting to play and is over quick. Though of course it also ends just as suddenly as it starts. honestly not much to say here that hasn't been said in previous commons. Still, good job for a single person project, and good luck with whatever you try next!
Both the chattino and pebbles are cute. As others have already pointed out, the camera can be wonky at time. It would be good if the camera waits a bit before respawning the chattino as camera movement happens too suddenly.
I remember seeing all of your Chattino work in progress updates in the Holojam discord; the finished Chattino model is really nice and cute!! I love it! Despite not being really good at platformers, I eventually made it to the jetpack! I had fun!
Cute model for the Chattini. Platforming was standard but the camera is the bane of me. Having to drag the mouse while holding right click make it feel too jittery for me. I'm not sure what supposed to happen in the end when you get the jetpack, for me it just teleport me back to the start. Still I think with some improvement with the camera would definitely make this game feel better!
I like the Chattino 3D model and the little jump animation.
My greatest enemy here was the camera. On each restart from checkpoint, the camera always faced the opposite way to the path forward, in other words, I had to rotate the camera 180 degrees every single time I died.
Having to right click also didn't help as my mouse would end up outside the game sometimes and I'd click on other stuff.
I had a hard time measuring distances and the jumps would sometimes not go high enough to reach a platform, as it seems some collission happened between chattino and the wall.
In the end I had to give up at the section with 3 flying pebbles moving left and right. I just got tired of running back there and failing the second jump over and over.
Some improvement suggestions:
- Camera: Make it always follow the mouse, no need to right click. Also keep the mouse locked in the center of the screen and invisible. There are mouse cursor options you can set in Unity to do this.
- Checkpoints: Always respawn the player facing the path forward and with zero velocity.
- Instructions: The game relies on a double jump yet it was not explained to the player that you can double jump.
- Shadow: As others have pointed out, in 3D platformers, the depth perception adds to the difficulty so unless you want to make a rage game, make sure you've added a player shadow below that helps as a guide to correctly identify the player position in space.
Solid 3D platformer bones, and the models are very good!
My suggestions - when resetting to a checkpoint, at the very least cancel all momentum, since you're snapped back instantly and in whatever direction you're facing, you can just launch yourself off the edge of the map. Might not seem like a lot, and it really isn't, but it helps. And drop shadow to help figure out where you're landing while you're in the air.
The theme is a little weak, but that's not really a big deal, the important thing is making something, which you've done! Hope you can come back to iron things out and maybe add more content, would love to see other Justice mascot models! Thanks for submitting!
Very cute Chattino! As is kinda the nature of jam games, there's some jank. I'm not really a fan of using right click to control the camera, it just did not feel super great. Also, having a shadow directly below the player would help a lot for jumps.
The click and drag hurts my wrist bit because of the camera sensitivity, and it's nigh unplayable while in fullscreen because right clicking the window highlights everything in this pallid blue colour. The platforming's a little tricky too because of how looking around works.
My comment on the art direction is usually in 3D platformers it really helps the player if the player shadow is directly under them. That way, if they're trying to view the player character from the side, they can see whether they're over certain terrain or hazards. I also think the models are a little flat in colour, egregiously so with the pebbles. They cast such a big shadow, but if you look at the area behind them that's supposed to be dark it's the same colour as everything else. This actually might be why the game was difficult for me when viewing top-down, because the pebbles dont have shadows on them they're sorta like a homogenous blob moving about and I don't get a sense of depth or distance from the pebble. One section was especially tricky because I could not tell if the pebble was above or below me. But I suppose that's why you can move the camera around, which would be fine if, again, moving the camera around wasn't such a pain. Skill issue on my part, likely.
Anyway, funny idea. Decent execution. It didn't really have a 'real' ending, but that's fine. It is in the nature of a jam that we can't always finish what we create. So in case you decide to revisit this post-jam, I look forward to seeing your game improve!
For a second I thought the jetpack was made out of cucumbers--probably because of how it's coloured, idk? I had an idea that I thought would be funny as an excuse as to why reaching the jetpack just unceremoniously teleports you back to the first checkpoint. What if the jetpack was made of cucumbers, and that *oofs* the Chattino and that's why they reset to the start. I dunno, food for thought XD
Good work and congrats on the submission though! I still had fun all things considered :P
The controls are a little iffy, but easiest thing you could do to help them is lock the mouse to middle of the screen. The mouse going off the game window and me right clicking other things was my biggest frustration. Very cute Chatini, true angst when you don't get the jetpack at the end after all that work.
cute chattino!! for these kind of 3d platformers, what you can do is make the model have a shadow connected via a spring element, so it's always showing a texture exactly below him.
Cute chattino model, the need to click and drag to move camera doesnt feel very good. A Nice short game, i got to the jetpack and nothing happend, is this a sick joke or something?*
In plat there were to choices at the end, Jetpack or Pizza with fries . But i was short on time :D and now jetpack teleports you to the start of level. About mouse i was hopeing that i will have time to do something with it but didn't have it XD
camera being super sensitive is annoying, but very fun! plus cute chattino...
Thanks a lot yep i need to learn more about camera control :D but i'm glad you had a fun playing my game ^^
