Score: 16610, Upgrades: 4, Grade: B I suppose I could have done worse! :D
This is another example of what happens when a game maker focuses on making a game LOOK, FEEL, SOUND and PLAY like an NES game, which is exactly what this jam is all about. You have something here that could have easily been a $19.99 game found in stores!
This is one of the shining examples of an NES Jam game entry done right!
Notes:
Phenomenal game! This could actually be on the NES. Fun gameplay, great artwork and music, presentation is spot-on. Nicely done!
I did my job, scored 17030 points, found 7 ammo upgrades and ended with B rank. I loved the ending sequence, it's awesome, not hinting it too blatantly in the description of the game was great.
The game could 100% be a NES game and it's very fun. It looks and sounds great, movement and the two weapons are all super pleasant to control and I love the quite open and just big enough dungeon featuring the proper interconnections so that you don't spend much time backtracking. The occasional visual changes between environments were the exact clues I needed for the exploration to be the most possibly fun, always kind of but not exactly lost. Finally the last fights are satisfying ones where you can make good use of the extra ammo capacity you collected through the game.
Love it!
I really enjoyed the game, it feels like it came straight from the NES. The audio is very enjoyable and fitting, and the areas are diverse and encourage you to explore the castle — very fun. The gameplay feels just like the original console. The only issue I found was that after entering the boss room and dying, I couldn’t get back in because the door was closed. I wasn’t sure what to do after that — I don’t know if it was intentional, but I would’ve liked to try defeating the boss again. Other than that, it’s a really great game for this jam. Congratulations!
Glad you enjoyed it! The thing with the boss is a bug and you should be able to retry. Sorry about that. We’ll post a patched version after the jam is over!
Nice work! I played this one to the finish and enjoyed it. It gave me Castlevania vibes in the art and player movement, and the NES feel was excellent all around. I love a few secrets in a game so I wasn't disappointed there (no spoilers). Early in the game I fired several times at the knight and it didn't defeat him, so I figured the armor prevented gun damage and stuck to the sword for the rest of the game, assuming the gun was for the assassination scene. When I had passed through the series of roof chambers and approached the final scene, I was *ready* with around 60 bullets.
Nice job on this!
I'm glad you enjoyed it, I usually stick with the sword for the knights, but the guns comes in real handy for the rats
That makes sense, in hindsight -- of the enemies, the rats got me the most. I have the unfortunate playstyle of hording game assets if I can at least get by without them, to avoid the dreaded "I ran out of bullets" feeling :).
Super fun little platforming and adventure game! I made it to the top of the tower, and I loved how you approached the final challenge before the ending. I didn't find all of the ammo upgrades, so I must return to get 'em all after I make a bit more progress rating and reviewing the other entries. Thanks for making and sharing your game!
I actually just found a bug with this. At the end it says how many you got out of 12, but there are 13 ammo upgrades. You’ll be able to find them all if you explore all of the rooms, though!
Awesome! This feels just like something I’d have stayed up all night playing in 1987! The lightning effect really adds something, and without violating the NES constraints either. I don’t think there was a single thing here that couldn’t have been done on the NES. Well done!
I guess just one thing was missing: Where’s the princess?
Thanks for playing! we payed close attention to making sure it follows nes limitations with a few exceptions to add a little polish.
There's a little treating waiting at the end
Thanks! Your game is also really good! I think a lot of us played it before the jam was over since you submitted so early.
If you got to the end you'd find your answer
Fantastic Game! Brought me right back to the 80's with that authentic NES feel. Really enjoyed the music, its difficult to replicate the sound. Great level design too, all of the space is used to great effect. Control was nice and tight. Well done!
Thanks! We did a lot of research about the NES hardware to make sure our game met the constraints. The level design was heavily inspired by Metroid, which you might have noticed!
You nailed this one. The NES feel the engaging gameplay. Awesome game good work
Thank you! Glad you had time to play it!
