i loved this a lot! cute fishing games are the key to happiness for me

The fish look awesome, concepts fun, the music is chiptune and not annoying. Great game. Only thing I'd change is making the reeling just a little more difficult. The whole time I never lost a fish and never felt all that close to losing a fish, even when catching the dragons. Still very fun though.

I found the dragon twice!

It's so simple and fun. You should let the player change the direction of the fishing pole.

Nice, casual game

I'm a lover of fishing minigames, and this is a solid one.  The fish icons were beautiful, but made me want to see that quality matched in the fish shadows and character animation. I think the game would benefit from some visual QoL, like wave assets so you can better track movement when the camera is entirely occupied by the blue ocean texture. A fishing line could be nice too, to help you better judge the distance to the player, though those kinds of features are secondary when making a jam game.

The mechanics of the fishing itself were really intuitive, and the UI was very clear without needing much instruction.

All in all, really solid entry and and great introduction to a fishing mini game I was previously unaware of! The game ran fine for me embedded in itch, btw.

Delightful fish sprites. I'm glad you followed the color pallette

Sorry can't figure out the controls!

The art looks nice but i had to figure out the controls.

The sprites on the data window are drop dead gorgeous. Really cool game!

The game is giving me much like retro vibe from the visual and music too. I really like it! But it would be better if there is a controller guide, because i had a hard time to figure it out by myself. Overall great game and concept.

Fantastic music! Very pleased to see a picotron game jam entry.

Luckily the controls were listed in the game page but it still took a while for me to figure out how to catch the fish and lure it back in (maybe it's because I haven't played Breath of Fire IV's fishing minigame). Having a tutorial would greatly help.

It was initially difficult to figure out the controls, but after I figured it out it was fun. I like the reeling mechanic, but for most fish I was just holding X with occasionally letting it go. Maybe if the fish were resisting a little bit more it would have been even more satisfying. With some upgrades for the fishing rod and the hook with maybe some big/hard to catch variety of fish I could see this game become really fun and addictive. Good job

Cool game.

The sprite work is great. I wish the controls were shown in the game, and even then I had a hard time determining how to reel in fish, do i use the arrow keys to counter-act their movement, but the sprites are hard to really tell what direction they are going.

Really cute game and concept just with little to no instruction.

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah I had a feeling the controls would be an issue. To be honest, I didn't really implement them the way I wanted to, and they were pretty confusing in the original game, which is something I should have addressed! Pressing the opposite arrow of the way the fish is currently facing (which is a little confusing because it's slanted - pressing up means up and to the right, left means up and left, etc) will increase tension and decrease fish hp, but only if the fish is currently trying to move and only if you're either pulling down on an upwards-pointed fish or if the fish is going sideways, you're pulling the opposite direction, and the fish is further in the direction it's pulling than center (so for example if the fish is going left, you press right, and the fish is left of center on the map). I... don't know why I made it so complicated. I did all the fish-catching code in a single morning, lol

Very cute character, also fun seeing a Pico 8 game submitted to the jam :)
