Creative Vision / Rationale / How Did You Incorporate the Theme
7 day Forest is based on dreams of leaving behind traces of our existence. Rather than competing, players tend to a shared forest where actions--digging soil, planting seeds, and watering others' plants--leave behind an act of care for wanderers they won't meet. We dream of transforming the language of games from taking to giving, from fighting to nurturing. Each player leaves behind a permanent change in our shared world that outlasts any person.

By every cycle's end, the forests become mementos of collective care that players, both old and new, can return to explore--walking through canopies that flourished in some and fading vegetation that struggled in others. Through this gentle, reflective simulation, players discover that the deepest connections aren't made through big gestures but through small acts of caring for something larger than ourselves. We believe that "a society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in."

7 day Forest incorporates generosity with multiple forms: to ourselves through mindful, meditative gameplay that invites us to be present; to invisible collaborators through patiently nurturing their plants; and to future players who will inherit the forests we've grown together. There's a lot of meaning in knowing your small acts, along with others, will create something none of us could build alone. After all, in caring for our shared world, we learn to see ourselves in others and others in ourselves.

Great look and really fits the theme of the jam. It is great to come back every day and watch the forest grow

This game was very impressive, especially for a game jam with the features & end-to-end player experience. After becoming familiar with the core gameplay, I began to explore the latest level, seeing the contributions of the previous players. To exhaust my remaining energy for the day, I settled on assisting with other peoples' gardens, & starting my own. I plan to log in the next day to see any changes in the level I was in, or to check out other levels.

I will be looking forward to what you & your team makes next. Some feedback:

  • For the first-time user experience when spawning into the level, the UI felt a bit overwhelming, although the utility is there to teach the player. Perhaps you can stagger some of the initial information into sequences, so the player gradually learns the basic controls as they're traversing the environment.
  • It would be nice to view the level name when pausing the game, so the player knows which level they can return to on another day.
  • The 'action ready' cursor needs some tuning for accuracy, so that it is accurate on where the action is ready to be performed, & the location where the player initiates the action.

Congrats!

Thanks frENETxK and everyone else who gave us their feedback - these things are extremely valuable. It's good most of these improvements are my domain - so much improvements to look forward to!

This is a pretty cool concept. I can see myself coming back to see how things are in the garden :) I fumbled around a bit and the game itself is pretty bright, so my eyes got a little tired, so the stamina limitation comes in handy.

Overall, very cool implementation of the theme! Great job!

Reposting here for visibility as I originally commented on the game page itself:

I just played a full day and I'm impressed! I haven't actually played a lot of cozy/farming games so maybe take this with a grain of salt but I feel there's really something special here.

The beautiful art, soothing UI sounds and relaxing music flow so well together. I really like the minimalistic approach that they all seem to share. They definitively bring the gameplay together, even playing for just a day I felt very satisfied.

The first couple of minutes playing I was a bit lost, but after reading all the popup tutorials and finally realizing that I wasn't able to perform an action in a square if I was far away from it it all clicked - at first I thought the red circle meant that no action was available on that square, not that I was too far to perform it.

There's potential here. I could see some people would love to play a larger version of this on Switch to wind down at the end of the day, and the communal aspect would be the cherry on top!

Congrats!

Developer(+1)

awww thank you for playing!! yeah there's definitely some UI tweaks we want to make post-jam, and we're still thinking about what form 7 Day Forest would take after as well~ so stay tuned~~

You guys made a beautiful and engaging game with such a lovely art and character animation

Great job!!!

Developer(+1)

thank you!

Submitted(+1)

Wow, I really like the art style. the character animation is cool, and the tools on the belt are a great detail. The camera movement during fast running feels really good, and overall the game is relaxing.

If I had one suggestion, it would be about the red circle, it feels a bit off compared to the rest of the color palette. Maybe making it an outline circle or adjusting it to a slightly pinkish red could help it blend in better. Just a suggestion!

GG 🎉

Developer(+2)

ohhh good call! i can see how the red is a bit aggressive, noted! thank you for playing

An experience like r/place with thoughtfulness and care. I enjoy how players are introduced to this experience with small quests to unlock new features!  How big could a 7 day garden get? What kind of art could be made and maintained? These are questions that the community would need to answer. I hope this game can grow its playerbase the same way it grows its plants :D

Developer(+1)

hahaha we hope so too!!

Very cool idea. This is the kind of player interactivity I wish I had incorporated into my game, I think it's the most effective way to convey a message of generosity, to encourage the player themselves to be generous in a way that will actually have an effect on other players somehow. This is my second day coming back to the game, and I spent it just watering the plants of others which had decayed.

The visuals are similarly simple yet effective. The shapes, flat colors, and off-white background give me a feeling like I'm looking at an art exhibition in a museum, like I'm playing a Bauhaus painting.

Developer(+1)

thank you so much for playing!! i'm sure our artiste would love your feedback about his art <3

Hi all!

The Garden of Words has officially concluded, and the new one, Forest of Dreams, has sprung to life. The new forest also needs your nurture!

(You can still walk around Garden of Words in the "Explore past forests" section)

And check out our dev log about it here :)

A niceee complete game. One of the reallllly bext way to implement the theme. I would definitely come back to play this again everyday haha, to build a forest.

The art and the gameplay is very well presented, an example of how minimal can create a huge impact if implemented correctly. I really enjoyed playing this. There’s definitely a replayability value for this. If you ever decide to work on it or release it on web, that would be amazing.

Overall, my mossssttt favorite of them all submissions. Greattt job!

awww thank you so much for playing!!

It's really cool. I just had to grasp and figure out the navigation and controls a bit but its really interesting. I'm actually surprised we had really similar even like intersecting ideas.
I had pitched environmental awareness to my team and that's what the core of our game was just a bit different.
The idea and game feel is brilliant, quite timeless as well. You guys did a great job and nice implementation. Really unique and cool stuff truly

Developer(+2)

thank you!

There's so much to like about this game, but it's the small stuff that really gets me: The particles letting you know where to use your item, the sound effects and particles when you perform actions.

I didn't really get if the "come back the next day" meant a literal day or if I was missing something.

Developer(+1)

hahaha thank you for playing! if you come back, you'll find out ;)

This is a truly beautiful and meaningful experience. The concept is powerful, and the execution, from the art and sound design to the overall atmosphere, is flawless. 7 Day Forest feels meditative and reflective in a way that’s rare in games. I found myself slowing down, appreciating the quiet impact of small actions, and feeling genuinely connected to something larger than myself.

It’s a concept with so much potential for a full release. I’ll definitely be coming back to it, I hope it wont shut down. Thank you for creating such a calming, generous space, it’s a wonderful reminder of how games can nurture rather than compete.

Developer(+2)

thank you for playing!! love that you're slowing down while playing, we really wanted to bring a few moments of serenity to the busyness of everyday life

What an incredible experience! I'm a big fan of the art style - the character, plants, and colours all work together so well. Tending to a community garden is such a fun idea and perfectly fits the theme. I'm glad you get to perform a decent number of actions each day (rather than limiting it to only nurturing a couple plants). The little details like the particles which show which plants need watering and being able to view who has cared for each plant is much appreciated. It's a great concept with a solid execution, fantastic work!

thank you for playing <3

Great looking game, you really nailed the mood in this game. The aesthetics, the feel, the art & animation, the audio all blends in well to create that sort of experience that players want to feel. There's not much to do in the game but there is a lot to feel. This is one of those interactive artform more than a game, and that's a good thing! It's a pretty creative way also to express the theme of Generosity where people collaborate in making a beautiful scenery. Another value that this game also emphasizes is patience - having to wait 7 days for the results, coming back daily to plant more seeds. Very impressive submission for a game jam! Thanks for sharing!

Thank you Akusan!

So first things first I want to address the overall aspect of the game I feel is important, I think the idea of bringing players together to help create something that's beautiful holds a great meaning and is ESPECIALLY important nowadays. You tie in the theme of the game outstandingly as you literally give to others your generosity/kindness of helping watering plants and saving plants from decay (via acts of kindness). This is a prime example of a game that is straight to the point, simple, yet very powerful.

Mechanics-wise, everything worked as intended and flowed very nice. I think the "coming back the next day" aspect is a really cool addition to the game as it kind of makes you want to come back to tend to your plants and also simulates actual plant-growth. I think there was a small thing where sometimes I have to move to a spot a certain way in order for the red circle to go white to dig, plant or whatever. I don't know if it's built to where I have to actually point in the direction of where the plot of land is and if it is that's definitely cool and works as it should, if not I think that's the only thing really I saw that only ever so slightly interrupted the flow.

The Good
  • Communal forest
  • Overall map-size
  • Simple, yet effective gameplay
  • Very heartwarming to play
The Eh (things i wish were in the game)
  • I think it would be cool if the outside map world had more like empty nature with the playing area having dirt-like colors or textures. I think it would add an additional level of immersion.
  • This is me just being astoundingly nitpicky and to be fair we were given only so much time, but I'm a big sucker for custom characters. I think it would be awesome to have.
The Bad
  • Virtually nothing

In conclusion, fantastic submission. I hope this finds a Steam release one day.

Developer(+1)

Thank you for your feedback, Balint. Our tastes are similar - your Ehs were also in my "Nice to have pile," which of course were tossed out since we had plenty in our "Must have pile."

Simple and powerful is to me, the highest compliment, so I'm glad that you bestowed that for 7 day Forest.

Submitted(+1)

At first I was clicking everywhere trying to dig but it didn't let me. I then moved over to the comment section to look for some hints. I then saw I can use WASD to walk around. Oh boy did I feel silly haha. It's like a community garden! What a wonderful idea, I absolutely love it! The 7-day cycles are also a great idea as it helps feel more invested from day 1 of the cycle, and seeing the gradual changes. I made sure to plant some flowers and use up my energy watering everything. It's so lovely to see how many people have been participating in the garden. Beautiful game, well done guys!

Developer(+1)

Hi Manojo - I'm sorry you felt silly; it's really the onboarding for newcomers that should be done better (feels like it's always a challenge, especially for a short game dev cycle). The forest is resetting this Sunday night - you should stop by and see how a fresh forest differs from the current one.

Thank you for your time!

Submitted(+1)

The visual aesthetic of this game is stunning, I just wanted to admire the surroundings. Not just that but the music and sound effects all fit together perfectly to add to the atmosphere. The gameplay is simple yet really engaging, I got to plant at least a dozen flowers and I might go back and plant more later. Overall, this is a very impressive game and such a pleasant cozy experience. I'll definitely be popping back in to check on everyone's flowers in the future. Fantastic work, kudos to your team!

Developer(+1)

yesss we're waiting for you back at the forest <3
