This was a fantastic experience, I'm astonished at the quality of work you were able to do within the time limit. I love abstract exploration games like this, I feel like it's one of the best usages of the medium. And even after finding all the stamps, I'm still discovering new artifacts and secrets. The map and interactions are so thoughtfully put together, like dialogue being different if you do things in a different order, or making you name the sacrifice yourself. In particular, I enjoyed browsing the art gallery. My favorite item was "Work of Yart." I first played this game a few weeks ago and I've still been thinking of it, it's made an impression on me. I'd love to chat sometime about your development process on this. Excellent job.

You guys did a great job at getting that scary vibe that scary games have. I uhh definitely screamed. I didn't know it was going to be a horror game at first, so I really thought it was just a quirky game at first. When I realized it might be scary, the only thing that kept me going was the satisfying sound of picking up cubes-- especially when you dash through a group of cubes. I found out you could dash accidentally. That was nice. The whole cabinet falling when you press tab was awesome. The art was very cohesive. I don't understand why there's a painting that says its proud of me, but that was a nice touch. I don't really know what kind of feedback I could give to be constructive; the game was well made. I did feel a little lost at times, but I think being lost is a good part of the game. I will say, I heard a loud sound when I walked towards the green playground but I wasn't sure what it was. The first thing I did in that level was "ooh, I wonder if I can play with the swings". As I was typing this, one of my hooks on the wall fell and I screamed so I'm still feeling the effects of the game lmao. I think this is a well polished game overall, and I can definitely see Markiplier playing this in his series of 3 horror games.

Thank you very much for enjoying Venue. 💚

You may have collided with some of the playground infrastructure. It would be quite noisy to bump into anything at this hour.

Curiosity... compelled this cat to investigate Venue.

While I don't believe the game aligns with the theme of generosity in any obvious way, its developer gave all they could to create something that transcends a typical gaming experience. The inclusion of cubes, artifacts, and stamps provides a well-crafted gameplay loop for an exploratory game, and the diversity of areas and music creates a wonderful sense of mystery and intrigue. The designer understands the amount of surrealness to show in this avant-garde world of art and dialogue to keep the player immersed without scaring them off. Even in moments where I was lost, I was not discouraged from trying to find what I missed because of all the small things I could inquire about (like the wandering mouse in the school). There were so many red herrings too, like the party room and the "string instrument" that I ended up playing randomly in different areas.

This was an hour well spent, and I'm glad I was able to finish. I suppose it did get me in the end, haha.

As I said in a previous post, sometimes the best moments are the ones we give ourselves to be original. JewelSelective has done that here.

Thanks for creating this world! I hope to explore it again someday.

This is a phenomenal experience, I thoroughly enjoyed my time exploring Venue! The amount of polish is mind blowing - everything from the visuals, audio, and interactions all follow the same cohesive style. I’ve never found picking up cubes as satisfying as this. While the link to the jam theme felt a little faint, the amount this game offers is certainly generous.

I collected all the stamps and finished the game with 12 artifacts and 589 cubes. The odd number of cubes makes me feel like I’ve missed some, it would be nice if there was an indication of how many there are.

Below are some random thoughts and findings. Really remarkable work!

Spoilers
  • I couldn’t work out what to do with most of the artifacts, if they did have a use.
  • Found the Mysterious Tape shown in the screenshots :)
  • Playing the Stringed Instrument in the pool room takes you to the errored artifact which, after a cool sequence, transports you to a bedroom. I only found one thing to interact with there and dialed out thinking I could return later. I feel like I missed something, but don’t want to reset my save to go back.
  • In the stairway from the ‘Sooner’ path of the forest (Center of Nowhere?) you can dash onto the rail and then dash again to get under the stairs. There’s a strange box and a symbol that looks like ⎍ but with the bottom connected.
  • Near the playground you can walk up the railing of the underpass ramp and use that to get out of bounds. Walking along the grass leads outside of the skybox.
  • I loved the art gallery light switch - that was executed so well!
  • Using the player’s name in the birthday room was creepy, I assume it came from the USERNAME environment variable?
  • The “It’s almost time!” guy and mouse toy were fun.
  • The statue room in the screenshots doesn’t have the lil goober watching and there appears to be a blood splatter D:
  • “This is not his usual residence” - is his usual residence the church by any chance?
  • A lot happened in 1981.
  • In the vaporwave area you can climb the railing of the tower, dash onto the big eye, dash onto the next eye, and then dash onto the cube on stilts.
  • Despite trying to find everything, I’m sure there’s heaps I missed.
  • ‘Doggy’ will be missed :’(

Thank you very much for enjoying Venue. You have been exceptionally thorough, experiencing nearly all there is to see.

The “errored artifact” will soon be usable at any time once acquired, so do not fret about destroying your hard work. Please look forward to version 1.01, where many issues have been addressed, and new discoveries will be available. Additionally, it was not the instrument that transported you. Though perhaps in the future, it will have purpose in another location.

What a strange symbol beneath the stairwell… An investigation is in order. Did you put that there?

…As for the room containing the chiseled statue, there does exist a way to recreate the preview image. :)

Your feedback has truly been invaluable.
Venue will never forget you. 💚

Glad to hear about the upcoming 1.01 version! Ah, I see that correlation was not causation with the instrument. Turns out the time it takes to equip it and play a few notes is longer than I tend to hang around in the pool.

I'm unable to decipher whether you are hinting at something with the symbol beneath the stairwell... it looks kind of like a doorway or a top hat (Dazzling Headgear?). The crates are preventing me from getting a closer look.

Thank you for the hint about the statue room, I now feel like a monster.

Wow what an incredibly psychedelic surreal almost liminal experience. It was polished from top to bottom, I had a lot of fun searching for the stamps. Everything FEELS great to do. One of my favorites so far!

Notes of little things I like I took during playing:

Incredible polish, cubes going from world space to canvas space, crt shaders, opening inventory animation, surrealness of everything. Dashing instead of jumping feels good, picking up ominous horn sound/crows on dismiss, great fog distance. Oh hell yeah elevator jams. "Please refrain from interrupting" board room lol. Naming the dog artifact...losing it :'( ...

This is really cool!

This game is super trippy in the best way. The visual aesthetic is very reminiscent of old video games with the retro, kinda creepy style, and the menu animations were a fun surprise. I had a lot of fun exploring the different environments and collecting all the artifacts, stamps, and paintings (or as many as I could, there were some I couldn't find 'cause I got a bit lost trying to remember where I have and haven't been). This is a ton of work for only three weeks and everything looks super polished. Great work!

Love this fun weird art style! really creative and matches the experimental dreaminess of the mechanics! Great job!!

Lovely experimental exploration game bringing to mind the likes of LSD: Dream Emulator, Hypnagogia, and even Petscop, but with a clear and uncompromised vision of its own that it executes wonderfully. Games like this remind me of why I love the medium! Full of style and has a great amount of polish for a game jam game. The theme of generosity feels loosely, maybe abstractly applied here, but that seems only fitting for an abstract experience like this.

Loved exploring these beautiful worlds. Amazing vibes, visuals, animations, sound effects and music. Everything is on point and very polished.

I just didn’t get the playground stamp. Got all the other ones, but couldn’t figure out how to get that one. :(

Thank you very much. 💚

Utilizing the "dash" feature is more helpful than one might assume.

Thanks, I’ve finally figured it out. 𜷼

This game is awesome! Super immersive and gives off a very eerie yet mysterious and nostalgic vibe.

Wow!

You've managed to cram so much in to a jam game. With such cohesion and polish as well.

The world you made is both terrifying and alluring.

This is beautiful.

The swinging bit cracked me up as I rotated into oblivion. The pickup sound was very satisfying. Overall great nostalgic vaporware vibe.

It's incredible you put so many content in your game. Music and envrionment settings give me a strong creepy feeling despite that I didn't understand the story behind them. Overall it's a great work!

Visuals and gameplay are very good. But sound design and animations are TOP Tier. Good job

If anyone is reading this comment, try the game now.

2 seconds into the game, I opened the pause menu, and the animations made me realize this is no ordinary jam game. The controls are smooth. The graphics may look retro3D but the art style is very coherent and it does an excellent job at painting the atmosphere – maybe a bit too well. The eerie atmosphere reminds of stanley parable and severance. I didn’t experience any jump scare (does the librarian count?) and I knew there probably wouldn’t be any, but the game made me scared every single second I played. I hope I can finish this game to understand fully how it incorporates the theme, but I don’t have the courage. Overall, from my experience so far, it is a very polished game with a lot of content. Good job! If the game is on steam one day, let us know :)

hey it's Chris:
What can I say? Or should? I constantly experienced a state of physical fright, chills down my spine, yet at the same time intrigue to keep going just a bit more. It's so unfortunate that I really won't play games like these enough, but I did get to 450 cubes, a few stamps, and a general rush of excitement from your creation. I loved every little detail you labored in the game: the illusion of the big hole that I needed to just jump through; the portals that slowly revealed themselves to be connected; the idea that, in every corner, there's something new, eerie, fun, waiting for me to come in and experience. Although I didn't feel any semblance with the theme, it still touched me. I hope this reaches the audience it deserves!

Thank you, Chris. Venue will never forget you. 💚
