Heh nice on the medieval sound and dorian mode.
I'm definitely a sucker for that kind of thing, I listen to a lot of medieval music, as well as create a decent amount of it on handmade instruments!
I went a different way for this jam, but it's cool hearing someone else writing music that is more medieval in its orientation.
Nice work! :)
Thanks for the listen and feedback! Handmade instruments, sounds very cool. I play sax and flute, you got me to look up their production process - seems they are made by hand in Japan, I didn't know that!
Very nice and clear ideas, probably the most satisfying use of the motif from all that I've heard so far, especially entering the section at 55s. The whole thing feels well rooted in the idea with how the other melodies borrow and swap around bits from it, like motific babies or something lol, with the evolving instrumentation helping a lot to keep things fresh. Awesome!
Thanks for the listen and feedback ๐
Motific babies. Lol
Very cool, first medieval take of the theme. its sound nice very simple, the chord at 0:50 I think its interesting but the expressions on the brass especially is probably a bit too much and the contrast from the previous section make it seems too obvious. at 1:00 the strings playing up high is a nice touch same for the the repeated motif right after at 1:03 but they feel a bit weak in the mix. The dulcimer up high for too long is also getting me some ear fatigue just playing down an octave from time to time would be very nice. I like the arrangement with all the swells, runs. For the looping, it works but to make it truly work you'll need to reintroduce the bass pedal you have like you have in the intro for aboutn 5 seconds so we get really nice re entry. Good job !
Hey! Thanks for the listen and the detailed feedback. I agree on more or less everything you said, you have good ears :)
had I spent more time I would have gotten all of those issues smoothed out. But for the time I did spend (two evenings), I am happy with the result :)
The first mellower section without the brass and winds really gave me a bit of a Civ VI feel, good stuff!
I'm still using the old PLAY version of HWO, but should probably take the CC Cloud sub for a month and test the new OPUS version if its any easier to use than the older one ๐.
Thanks!
Re opus - I'm pretty sure it is easier to use, worth the low price of the subscription at least to try it out...
Hey! An Opus user :) Trying to master that beast myself, great job!
You might want to work a bit more on the instrument dynamics; in my opinion, that's what's missing for even more realism. (Do you know the trick of mapping CC11 and CC1 together in Opus's macros? It helps a lot!). Nice composition by the way!
Thanks! I actually use the template they provided which has the macro built in on almost all of yhe tracks. But I actually felt that was really bad for realism since it didn't allow me to tweak them independently...
I really don't like a lot of things about the EastWest vsts.. it was just so handy to open the template and start writing. I really want to make my own template with audio imperia vsts that I own and like a lot
I really like how stripped down this feels without sounding empty. Sounds great!
Less is almost always more when it comes to arranging... I feel I could have done even better at that had I spent more time on it - mainly making sure each part has a very clear focus point and that whatever else os going on servse very clear and distinct purpose such as rhythm, background harmony etc. Thanks for the listen and the feedback ๐
Really like the use of the motif! It going through all the different instruments and getting bigger and adding on other elements was wonderful. It gives like a cinematic vibe because of that and it works very well!
Thanks! I appreciate that ๐
Oh yeah, I can definitely see this being used in a TRPG where you're planning out how to manage all your medieval troops on the battlefield. The orchestration feels huge and is helped a lot by the way the song keeps building up into each new section. The swells are seriously great, it feels like it's always heading towards something. The motif usage here works perfectly too!
I'm not a mixing expert or anything and this is very much nitpicking, but I felt like while the instruments were panned around and had great stereo imaging, everything felt very close-up in my headphones and less like they were all on the same stage. I think it's mostly from the drums and horns, but I could be completely wrong. The mix overall is great, as is the rest of this submission!
Thanks for the detailed feedback! As I said on another comment here, the mix isn't totally there as I didn't spend enough time on it. Appreciate your kind words ๐
Thanks!
Yes, the mix isn't totally there yet.. I just spent two evenings writing this piece, only started after I saw the message that there was a two day extension for the submissions lol...
The arrangement could definitely use some tweaking as well, Basses are there but not giving enough oomph, I agree. Plus I'd probably make the track longer and have more time for each idea to play out more fully. But for the time I did spend, I am happy with the result :)
Re VST - This track was created with Eastwest vsts. I have the Composer cloud plus subscription which gives access to their whole ~3tb catalog... I've been playing around with their free Cubase template they released not long ago, I even made a video review about it, check it out on my YT channel -
I feel like Iโm standing right on the beginning of my new adventure. What will I encounter? But with the heard full of determination. It captures that certain magic and also that medieval style perfectly. The motive fitted like a tee. Canโt find anything else than to say phenomenal work!
Thanks! Appreciate the kind words ๐
