Description
I originally only wanted to make one song because I was feeling burnt out, but everyone posting their battle tracks in the Discord was very motivating and led to some more fun music making!

Verdant Green was mainly inspired by Elliot Hsu (the goat), and uses the first 6/8 motif. While making this I was picturing that the game would be some kind of creature collector (kinda similar to Pokémon?) and this song would play during a vibrant forest-y location that's got all kinds of nooks and crannies to explore. The usage of the motif is pretty direct, being used directly by the bagpipes and whistle while the guitar plays with it a bit more loosely.

Verdant red still uses the same motif, but it had to be translated to 4/4 and I made it (more?) minor so it's less of an exact usage. I still tried to keep that triplet rhythm and general melodic movement with the supersaw plucks right at the beginning and kept that in mind all throughout. The section around 1:03 uses a version of the motif more directly with the pluck being panned left and right. It should probably go without saying that this would be a lot later in the game for a big boss fight that would use motifs and melodies from all throughout that don't exist in this limited soundtrack. It does have the second motif thrown in there because I thought it would be cool lol (not gonna say that this uses both because of that though).

Verdant Green's loop starts at 0:15 and ends at 1:49
Verdant Red's loop starts at 0:13 and ends at 2:29

Music is cool and good and cool stay cooking thank you :) <3

Bagpipes! Cool Bassline! Vibe Switch up in the second track! This is very cool I like it a lot

First track:

I like the dry bassline with the flute a bit more reverby. It gives it a nice sense of space.

The drumline has an easyness to it as well, nicely timed.

Heh... it's something I've grown accustomed to now, but on the second track, at 0:08 when you go up to that minor third, I'm reaaaally craving it to be a bit sharp, just  so that it barely reads as a minor third.

I think I also want to hear more dissonance in the A section, like it has a lot of consonance without any tension being built and released. Dissonance carries tension - and this piece has a tense energy to it and I feel like that tenseness calls for more dissonance.

Overall, very good though. Nicely done! :)

Love how buzzy the bass is in Verdant Red, overall just a really fun and groovy track.

Good work!

Mmmmm those bass lines… -chef’s kiss-

Yes, Verdant Red is really effective!! A perfect track for intense gameplay :) As for Verdant Green, as has been mentioned, it's a little too 'MIDI file' sounding, which I think is due to the sound choices and overly harsh quantization. That said, I believe it's the only groovy 6/8 in this Jam! Well played :)

Hey really love both of the tracks!

The first one being that adventure rpg type song while traveling in the overworld works so well with that motif and you nailed it. A great use of different instruments as well definitely gives it that video game vibe that transported me instantly.

The second song is really great as well. All your synths are mixed well and you can hear all the different aspects of it. Definitely something that Im trying to work on to get my songs to sound as clean as yours. Especially when adding like a violin or piano to a heavily electronic track. It can be hard to mix in to sound coherent but you did that very well.

Great work!

Very cool stuff, both tracks are so different. First track have some crazy Zelda vibe with the instrumention and the chords used. I would probably change the piano VST for something more "alive" or "organic".

Second track the mix is really great, the compositional structure and story telling is very well done. 1:07 to 1:55 I think the square wave lead is present for a bit too long, I would've tried to either change the lead at some point or change direction completely structure wise.

Well done, awesome submission !

Groove in green was super fun! Funny, I also started playing around with a bagpipe sound when I started working on this jam :) (ended up going with dulcimer instead though)
Overall great track (refering to green), there were a few moments of harmonic clash, might be a preference/style thing, but I'd check out for example 0:28 and 0:45 - tweaking the chord or the melody a bit might make it sound more palatable, to my ears at least lol.
Other than that, great vibe! and the bassline + drums work really nice, thumbs up!

I love these tracks so much! When the choir hit in Verdant Red, it got so real fr.

Me when the 2nd track came on:

Do I hear DM DOKURO as an influence in your music? I loved the 6/8 time you used in Green, and can absolutely hear this as a boss battle theme or like a really difficult platforming level. Masterful use of base and instrumentation.

Red was super different and really refreshing to hear, I agree with the others in that it sounds super energetic and I feel like I'm playing an AG racing game or something. Amazing work

Probably subconsciously! I don't think I had his stuff in mind here but I have spent a lot of time looking at his stuff, personal favorites of his are "The Tale of a Cruel World" (if only for that juicy chord progression) and the Devourer of God's theme which has carried me through many fast food shifts lol :)

Thanks for the comment!

First of all, I love the fact that it's kind of Ocarina of Time-like, well at least for Verdant Green.

Verdant Red is like the steroid driven Gran Turismo background track during a chaotic race-like.

Both share aspects, which I like.

So for me it's great.

The motif was audibly used in Verdant Green, but Verdant Red was audibly less focused on it.

But, It was a likeable set of tracks.

Thank you for the comment! I definitely get what you mean with Verdant Red focusing on the motif less, in my head I didn't want to have both tracks use the motif directly as-is for main melodies so it got put more in the background and the melodic content was mostly motif inspired rather than directly using it.

I love your stuff, really, it's always refreshing to listen to without trying to do too much somehow I can't explain yet. Maybe it's the layering you do well, the catchy melodies, the sweet production, or the combination of taste and solid choices for each element. Your stuff seems to have something that I'm missing and I'm just sitting here taking notes tryna piece together what it might be haha

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much, that means a lot! I think the feeling goes both ways, though more generally I think it's always awesome to see everyone's musical personality come through so strongly in all of these jams :)

Loved both tracks! Great use of the motive

Killer mix on both tracks! Love the contrast of Verdant Green's laidback feel to Verdant Red's high energy. It's like going from the tutorial village with Verdant Green to reaching the apex of your journey with Verdant Red. Great Job  :D

Developer(+1)

Yeah the game consists of two areas, one happy forest village and then you step outside and immediately fight a god in a collapsed world lmao

Thank you for the comment! :D

Upbeat and with a hint of funk, what’s not to like about it? Really dug the bass sound in Verdant Green. It had a rubbery texture that really worked well. And then there Is Verdant Red. Oh BOY! I’m getting hyped when I think of it! And just the production value! It is just epic, full of energy and just makes me want to move with a stank face. I now definitely need more of this. Fantastic work!

Developer(+1)

Thank you for the kind comment! Both of these were super fun to make and I'm glad it paid off, funnily enough I think it was your battle track in the discord that was the moment that made me decide  to try making one too haha :)

Okay...

Verdant Green - BASS. BASS. BASS. BASS. BASS. A wonderful piano that feels like it's telling me a story over a backdrop of lip-smacking hormones..... and, of course. Bass

Verdant Red - DYNAMICS! SYNTHESIZERS! PAPHOS! DRUM BEATS! I love this mix of upbeat war drums, some shammy shakers..... and then pure synth in the flesh! I especially love how the synth itself seems to dance to the beat of the music..... (or I'm getting extra sound hallucinations from lack of sleep, lol).

Perfect Green! Rawr :>

Drums and bass are two of my favorite things in music haha :D

Thank you for the kind words, and I'm glad you enjoyed the songs!

Thank you! I've always been super inspired by common rhythm game genres like Artcore specifically because of how they combine real and electronic stuff, glad to hear that it's paying off!
