Yes - I'm new to game jams!

How does your game fit the theme?
The player begins in darkness with no direction. Progress only happens once they take action and light the first fire. That small start is what begins to reignite the sun. You just get started.

alright, the vibes of the game are so good, loved the art, the 2d lighting is really impressive and the level design was fun.  Solid controls,, the goals on stages were clear and it is just a very chill game (even if I hate the enemies that hover above you if you dont lure them away XD). Even more impressive seeing that it is your first jam game... Good job!

Whoa this was good! ✨
I enjoyed and like the puzzles, I'd say they were very clever and well done, torch mechanic was fun to do. Really nailed the vibe, melancholic but hopeful! As a fellow newbie, congratulation on finishing your first game! 🎉

Really creative idea! The idea of an interaction being tied to a limited resource is super interesting (and the fact said resource can be different types is so cool). Aesthetically I really like the visual and the audio, and the story is super interesting. I'm very excited to see it's development :D

Really liked it! The mechanics are really interesting, reminds me of Lava & Water! (the old flash game lmao) Great work!

Submitted(+1)

That was a very creative idea for the jam's theme, i liked the fire mechanics it's a great puzzle. (also congrats on your first game jam!)

Submitted(+1)

Loved this game!!! I like how you handle the lighting and the puzzle with the torches! Though the gravity did feel a little low for some reason- But really good idea! Keep going :>

Fun: amazing puzzle platformer, love the vibe, the mechanics, the idea of lighting the torch to use the platforms and open doors while trying to make sure your torch doesn't run off, amazing

Presentation: love the vibe, the artwork was amazing, the sound design as well, the light improved the vibe a lot, did you draw yourself or did you use assets?

creativity: great idea, the colored torches, the platforms, great work, fits the theme well

I love the introduction , but since it was rather long compare to the others , with how silent it was , it may cause a problem on the overall experience , since the mood just not set up enough. Its best you add a background ambience sound effect or just music. The gameplay movement overall was nice ,and atmospehere is well made too.  Would love for you to try my game

Hi! nice introduction to gamejams you have here. The atmospherics and overall feeling of the game was really melancholic, I liked it so much! Even stayed with the BGM while doing other things since it's so peaceful.

The puzzles were really interesting and well done, which is to admire since making a fun puzzle game is difficult.

The only thing I didn't quite like was the checkpoints. Currently I experienced a bug (Linux version btw) which made that when I die the second time after a checkpoint, I have to restart the game from the beginning. ALSO enemies blocking completely my path made it difficult to use the light-boxes (I get that may be intentional, to avoid mindless placing of the boxes).

The torch mechanic I find really fitting for this jam btw like Just Start a Fire or smth like that. Fitting.

Good game! congratulations on your first jam !!!

Developer

Hey, glad you enjoyed! After the jam, we are going to rework a lot of things, including the checkpoints. And yeah, the first was just one part of the just get started aspect of our game, but so was the ending scene, which i hope you got to see.

I liked the atmosphere and the graphics ! Maybe a camera a little closer would be nicer. What I think is that since the environment is all dark, we don't really need to see the entire level at once. And sentimentally the closer camera gives a more personal vibe -- which could intensify the dreadness and despair that I felt in the atmosphere. The movement is really slow - with the time mechanic of the torchs, it is a bad combination. The tutorial was well done, the light box was a little difficult to use properly

Developer

We are going to fix many issues after the jam! There will be 2 difficulties too. One brighter and easier, one harder and darker. We are going to keep the camera far out, but we are going to make the levels more puzzle-y, like how it was originally supposed to be, and you'll need to see the whole level to figure the puzzles out. Thanks for playing, hope you enjoyed!

I might give this one another chance but I really tried to sit through it and got frustrated at the end of the tutorial.

Some unsolicited advice from a first time jammer to another, I feel like some of my frustrations come from the conduct outside of this game. Was a little disheartening to see someone complaining about the circumstances of how their game was played on stream, when other devs would really love to be in that position.

I bring it up because I feel like part of me understands and wishes you succeed, I mean you're just getting into game development and jams after all, but as someone with not that much experience with the scene itself (Again, mostly just a programmer, not much game dev experience :p) I can already tell that it's always going to be an uphill battle that takes a little bit of luck and patience and a lot of determination. Will replay this one eventually, and I hope it wasn't uncalled for or anything to bring this up. Best of luck.

Developer

Hey, no worries! I completely understand where you're coming from; that frustration is absolutely called for based on the circumstances. Regardless, I'm glad you tried out the game and hope you'd be willing to give it another try sometime!

Love the aesthetic of the game.

I would love for the player to be a bit faster... every time I had to start over I felt a piece of me die lol. Good job

Nice game! The story gave me glimpses of the lore of the Hollows from Dark Souls. I loved the core mechanic of the torches and the attributes from each color. Well done!

Developer(+1)

Thanks. Im glad you enjoyed!

Cool idea for a game and the story reminded me a lot of OneShot. Unfortunately I really struggled with being able to see anything really in some parts, especially with the blue flame and some puzzles didn’t feel very intuitive like the parts with the light eating souls. It sometimes felt more like I was being lucky that they weren’t were I was going at the moment when you couldn’t see them yet (like in the 2nd level) or like I could only pass after I broke them by squishing them with a box or elevator, making them completely trapped.

after finally beating the 3rd level, or at least reaching the last torch there, the game soft locked for me in where it wouldn’t lower the door enough for me to exit :(

Eitherway, this is a neat game for the first time and having some more “advanced” settings was pretty cool too! A bit more visibility would have helped a lot with my personal enjoyment, which, if you don’t want to add it to the main game directly, you could add as an accessibility feature in the options or instead of using “full blue”, you could go for a brighter color and / or tint of blue like cyan.

Developer(+1)

Hey, glad you enjoyed it! The goal with the Shade was actually to trap and/or distract them any way you could. Definitely could work on making that more obvious. The soft lock is a known bug. We made a comment about it in the main itch page. You need to go to main menu and go through level select to get to that last area (which would be really cool if you'd be willing to hop back in just to see that last animation 🥺). I think what we are going to do is have like 2 difficulties. One that makes the puzzles a bit easier and brighter, and one that is harder and darker. The way it is now will likely be closer to the harder difficulty. We also plan on having around 20 levels.

My main problem with the shades was not understanding that, but moreso the execution of it. A lot of times, when you have distracted them, they would still block the path

In the 3rd (2nd non-tutorial level) level by the big elevator, when you would run to the right, to get to the distraction and the shade would follow you from the left for example, you were actually stuck as it was then blocking you. I eventually got past it by going left instead and going the elevator there up fast enough, where the shade then got stuck on it and then got pushed into the ground by the elevator and stuck there, no distraction needed.

In the 2nd (1st non-tutorial level) it was a bit tricky to jump over the shade at the end, as the corridor was so small.

It might just be a skill issue though

I did see the ending now too and I think it is pretty awesome actually haha. I still liked the game eitherway and as a first game you did a great job!

Developer

Thank you so much! We decided thay we are going to remove shade collision and do some more work on levels to make the game really feel like a puzzle game. Right now it definitely Italy feels more like an obstacle course.

The strong point of the game for me is the visuals and the moody lighting and sounds.

Thematically, I was going to do something very similar to what you went with here, as in light being the lifeblood and letting it run out resulting in bad things happening, so I had a curious interest as I went along.

I think the animation and move speed needs upping a touch, movement felt a bit flat in general really.

Conceptually and aesthetically this is a good game, just needs some small gameplay tweaks to improve it and make it a better gaming experience :)

Well done and congrats for your first jam game :)

Developer(+1)

Yeah.. we weren't able to get the animations for the player done in time, sadly. I think we may tray to upgrade the game after the jam! Thanks for playing!

Submitted(+1)

Very well crafted idea and amazing for first game..keep making more games:)

Developer

Thanks so much! I think we're going to try to expand upon this game; turn it into a better, more enjoyable, playable game!

Yup that's what you should do..all the best for future updates. Make sure to post about the game in discord/Reddit to gain more player :)

Nice game. Quite good for first game. I like lighting and art, though as stated by others, enemies could be a little bit less annoying. But overall cool game. Good job!

Developer

After the jam, we're gonna work on it some more. Fix the levels, enemies behavior, and overall playability of the game.

The atmosphere is impressive, however I think the final torch is not necesseary, and ususally just makes you to redo everything from the last checkpoint. Apart from that this game is a great experience
