Very solid game, especially for a first-time game jam. I like how the crowd grows as you successfully hit the notes properly, and you've got chances to get back into the rhythm of the game if you mess up. I do think it could be a bit of quality of life if the notes where changed to be bigger or maybe had an additional outline color to them, perhaps, but that may just be my own perspective on it. Beyond that, all I can really say is maybe the visuals could be fine-tuned a bit more, but after that, all I'd hope to see is just more of this game if you choose to do so. I wish you well in your game dev journey going forward

Play this reminded me of how I still struggle at games like guitar hero, where I felt like with the dedicated controller I had better controls, but still lost if my performance was too bad.

In Gentoo Riff Riders its not the case - you always get a chance to get back into your rhythm and maybe secure the gig - I prefer it that way to punish a smaller series of mistakes this way better!

You'd metioned you did all the assets yourself - is that also true for the music tracks ? The Track gentoo felt so familiar at parts.

Nevertheless - I had great fun and you did great for your first game jam submission every!

Keep up the good work

Developer

Thank you so much! Yes, I did all the music, in Gentoo I used the royal road chord progression (anime chord progression). Maybe that's why it sounds familiar. Thank you for playing!

This game was so adorable and fun, especially since I love rhythm games :) I loved the touch of penguins appearing as you're playing better since it feels more immersive, and the music was very jammy and fun. My only feedback would be that I think having some VFX or sound FX when hitting a note would be very satisfying and add an extra layer of polish to this already very fun game! great job and especially on your first jam!

Developer(+1)

Thank for playing! And thanks for the feedback, it is in my list of things to add. I loved your game!

Cute is the name of the game! When you play good penguins come to see the show. Adorable...

On a side note, I wanted a little story snippets while playing every level, it would feel more like progressing.

And, difference between normal and fast was too high, a balancing act would be nice

Thank you so much! And thanks for the feedback, I will keep all of this in mind.

rhythm games isn't my style, but I had fun playing a few levels :)

This game is actually so fun, lol. The songs are fun (both the sound and the play patterns), the difficulties are impressively balanced too. It seems like you had a lot of good playtesting sessions, or your intuition is spot on.

I think adding a little bit more juice when the player successfuly hits a note (a sound, or a visual effect, or something) would go a long way - maybe the visuals could be improved generally. But overall, the game is already really fun. I definitely think I will be coming back to it sometime and trying to master the highest difficulty, lol

Developer

Thank you so much! I didn't playtest that much so I guess the random numbers I put on where nice hahaha. And thanks for the feedback, I will keep all of this in mind. Thank you for playing!

I liked this rythm game a lot! I'm so bad in everything involving rythm though. Managed to complete the third difficulty!

I would love to see a more complete game, maybe with more feedback when you get a note right! (just a suggestion, but I know nothing about rythm games and it could be a little distracting so idk).

Great first submission!

Thank you so much! And thanks for the feedback. I loved your game!

Although rhythm games aren't exactly my jam, this was really nice (and the penguins were cute). Good job!

Developer

Thank you so much! Really liked your game too.

What an adorable game! Gotta be honest i wasnt really feeling for the music, but the more i played, the more it grew on meI Also nice detail for having the penguins move based on the arrow keys i pressed. i especially love how the number of penguin audience is directly tied to how well you perform. I also appreciated how, instead of just making the notes fall faster at higher difficulties, the song itself speeds up and changes tempo, each song on each difficulty has a fresh vibe. Gentoo on Fast was a blast to listen to!

That said, just needs a little more polish in the art and visual effects department. Maybe have a vfx that shows which notes you missed or hit perfectly. Also having the background match with the penguin vibe would be super cool, maybe have them play inside an igloo, maybe adding polar bear bouncers chilling on the side of the stage.

Overall, i totally vibe with this game! Really impressive for composing three diffferent songs in just ten days, especially when its your first game jam entry. Well done!

Developer

Really glad you liked the music! Yeah I feel like the visual aspect is one of the weakest points of the game, thanks for the suggestions, they would be a fun addtition. Thank you for playing!

I really liked your game! I liked how an audience gathers around you as you play through the song. A minor issue is that at the end of the song, there were still a few notes falling down when the end screen showed up. Great music too!

Developer

Thank you for playing! Very glad you enjoyed it. And thanks for the feedback.

Brother , why am i vibing so hard. Its been a while since i played Friday Night Funkin. Its so good !

Developer

Thanks for playing! Really glad you enjoyed it.

This is cool! Would like some visual markings when you tap the arrows so you know you're taping them, or some type of effect when you do hit them. Aside from that it's great :D

Developer

Thank you for playing! And thanks for the feedback.

This is one really satisfying rythm game, all the songs sound different and unique, the difficulty progression is natural, and I just love how the crowd gathered based on the performance… I just wish you gradually unlocked harder/faster songs as you progress, but that’s fine. The game is amazing as it is, but it just needs some UI tweaks to make it perfect, as you have color-coded directions it would be great if the info on how on beat the player is would correspond to each note, and maybe add a too late text as well… and also it would be nice if the corresponding key lit up when the note is on top :) Overall a really cute and well executed rythm based game, especially as your 1st one

Developer

Thanks for the feedback I will keep all of this mind, hadn't really thought about adding these things to the UI. But now that I think about it, they would be a really nice addition. Thank you for playing!

I love rhythm games and this was super fun. Had to give all the difficulty levels a try and had a blast. The penguins were also super cute. Well done!

I liked the music and it's very impressive that you did all the music and assets yourself. One thing I noticed is that the songs end before you play all the notes. Other than that it's a very well-made game!

Thank you so much!

Cute art and I think the mechanic itself is working very well, congrats and good job on your first jam!
PS: We need a penguin rock band album

Developer

Thanks you so much! Yeah maybe one day I will make a full penguin album, that would be fun. Thanks for playing!

This is just so awesome and made me so happy. All the songs are great, but Gentoo is my favorite, it's so funky. That syncopated part with the Left + Downs and the Right + Ups is so much fun to play.

I do feel like sometimes the vocals in the song do not match exactly with the arrows - I noticed a few times that there's some vocals in the song that don't have a corresponding arrow,  and sometimes there's some arrows that don't have a corresponding vocal in the song. For the most part though, everything lines up very well, which must have taken a lot of time to map out and sync up. Good job!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much! Yes I had some trouble lining up all of the arrows to the notes. Thanks for the feedback and thanks for playing!

I like how the music felt very "penguin" like, and it really fits the vibe of the game! Well done!

Thank you! I loved your game.
