Nope - I've completed at least one game jam before.
How does your game fit the theme?
I interpreted "just get started" as "skip the preamble." I thought the most silly and extreme way to do that would be to start at the finish line -- the final boss fight. Training? Nah, boss fight. Items? No need, boss fight. Strategizing? We'll figure it out on the fly. Hit the start button and we're boss fighting.

its pretty good art is good too w game
if u can rate my game too:)
The fact the fight portion takes place on the beat of the music i really like. I struggled a bit at the beginning, especially because my keyboard isnt full size and doesn't have proper arrow keys. So possibly having wasd support would be nice
Ooh, pretty big oversight tbh, good catch. I'll add WASD support. I'm gonna look into custom key binds too after that, since not everyone has the same equipment.
Nice spin on the theme, I think it really just needs some extra juice (more dramatic boss + music, some background elements maybe?)
I kept retrying after I leveled up. Would be cool if there was like a shop or something w/ branching power ups (ex. slow down the bar, maybe a shield, etc.) to add more variety than just bumping stats on level up
Would also be cool to see a challenge mode for a level 1/perfect run
Right on, thanks for playing.
Love this interpretation of the theme! The sprites are simple and cute, and the music is nice.
I think it could've felt more final-boss-y? Having multiple phases helped but maybe it could've had some over-the-top name instead of just "Vampire" to make it feel less like a random encounter.
Even though I suck at the game (and the timer felt very unforgiving to me), the level mechanic kept me going, since I knew I'd eventually get better as long as I kept throwing myself at it, so that was a good call! I do think we could've gained more xp/leveled up a littleee faster.
Fun game!
Totally, good notes. That will all be good polish to add. This is giving me ideas for how to handle xp gain too—very helpful to hear those details. I think I can come up with a fun way to solve for that.
Thank you for taking the time to play and give this feedback!
Very fun! I love the art and the music doesn't get old whatsoever. Some of the phase 2 combos were practically impossible for me haha. Despite that I was still able to persevere and achieve victory!
My biggest suggestion would be to add a short countdown after pressing start. Since I was clicking start with my mouse and then having to move my hand to the arrow keys, I lost precious moments since the game starts expecting input immediately. Beyond that, the arrow indicators tended to blur together (especially when in a rush) and was hard to tell which key I actually needed to press.
Side note: I kept playing until level 7 to see if I'd become impervious to the vampires damage since my defense matched their attack... I did not. Great concept, well done!
Okay so like I definitely had that thought during development too, but copped out saying "just start" because of the theme lol. Even watching play tests, I saw it startled people, especially the first time.
I'll definitely do that in a new version. Good notes there, thank you.
Glad you liked it, and big respect for checking the damage calcs!
It doesn't even have to be a countdown. Just a momentary half second pause if you wanna keep that "just start" feeling.
Super fun little game! I really enjoyed getting down the inputs and the music was great and added lots to the experience. The concept was also very nice, I haven't seen that interpretation before. Great job overall, especially for a first jam
Really glad you liked it, thank you for playing!
Very nice music and rhythm overall.
The thing I would like to see improved is the fact that the different arrow key visuals look the same to each other, just different orientation, so it's very hard to immediately knows what keys to press. You sort have to pause and interpret them, which is much slower and prone to error. Rhythm games like Guitar Hero have their buttons color-coded for example, so the monkey brain can process it much faster :) I hope this is some small suggestion for the next version of your game.
100% I was actually thinking how I'd handle that in a new version, and differing color was exactly one of the ideas I wrote down. I've got some ideas for how to implement that as a feature.
Thank you for playing and for taking the time to give feedback!
This was quite fun! I enjoyed the music lining up with every attack, it felt like I was clashing against the vampire with every successful input
Awesome, glad that effect came across well. Thank you for playing, and I'm glad you thought it was fun!
Love how the gameplay combines the music with the attacks! The art is simple, but it gets the goal of the game! Another thing is that I loved that you put music and options into the game. Great job overall, really liked playing it!
I'm glad you liked it. Thank you for playing!
Your take on the theme is quite interesting. It was a bit difficult for me (but maybe its a bit of a skill issue), managed to get the boss at half health before I just got one shotted haha. I cool thing i thought of was, everytime u lose, u still retain those levels so its like ur training on the big boss xD. Nice work!
You nailed it—skill issue is a game mechanic here since you gain xp and level up anyway. That's exactly what I was going for. Thank you for playing!
It's a very cool idea, and I really like the gameplay - simple but fun. My one issue is with the timer, which I think is a bit tight, maybe having a difficulty setting for this would be nice. Overall though, it's a small issue in a well built and fun game. Nice job.
Good feedback—I like the idea of difficulty/accessibility options. I'm sure there's a good way to work that in. Thank you for playing and for sharing your thoughts.
I love the idea, but I feel like there might be a few tweaks, just add a bit to the timer for each correct key press, and reduce for a wrong one, and maybe record how those moves will play out when the boss fight starts out, but other than that it was a pretty interesting game :D
I really like these ideas, maybe even as unlockable upgrades/abilities or something
Thanks for playing and for sharing your thoughts!
When I started playing I thought... Damn I must be getting old because I clearly suck xD. And I struggled to see which buttons to press visually, but I think that's what adds to the difficulty and it honestly made it fun. I started to get the hang of it and saw that you level as you go. I really enjoyed it!
Haha me too tbh
This is giving some ideas for what else might be fun in a fuller version
Thank you for playing, I'm glad you had fun!
Enjoyed the game. I think I learned I'm directionally challenged, but still had a fun time. The music and attacks on beat was lovely touch!
You're definitely not alone lol. Glad you had fun, thank you for playing and for sharing your thoughts
Cool concept! Really liked that the hits were on the beat
Nice, glad you liked it. Thanks for playing!
It reminded me of that game released long ago on IOS where you had to defeat the boss over and over. Fun game. Good job.
If you remember the name at some point I'd love to check it out for research
Thanks for playing, and glad you had fun!
UNDEAD SLAP! SLAPPERS! Great concept, great music. Beat it twice, just to say I overcame the darkness.
Glad you liked it! You rock for beating it twice
