Nope - I've completed at least one game jam before.

How does your game fit the theme?
It's a game about a long and difficult journey. At the beginning of the game you are told to "just get started". It ties into the narrative.

Nice game! The directional lighting was cool, and I thought that the grabbing on to the ledges of blocks was a interesting mechanic :)

SO GOOD!! The controls are so tight and fluid, and you are clearly a fantastic pixel artist and level designer. The game is super tough (I myself haven't completed it, but it definitely brings to mind old NES and SNES games!). Absolutely fantastic game, one if the best in the jam!

If you had the time to check out and rate my entry as well, that'd be very appreciated!

Developer

Pretty sure I already rated/commented on your game. Thanks for checking mine out!

Making your own platforms to traverse the environment is a really cool and fun idea, with the knife and the seeds! My only real issue is that the timed sections are a bit too lenient sometimes and a bit too brutal in others, a variable timer would've been appreciated. Stellar work here regardless :>

Developer

Thanks for playing! Would've loved variable timers but this was way easier to code in the timeframe.

I gave on what I think was the last level, but I loved the lighting, sound effects, mechanics, puzzles, and levels. The last one was a bit too hard for me, but I guess that was the purpose: overcoming difficult challenges, and the only way to do that is to just get started. I love this!

Thank you for playing. I have nerfed that final room in the upcoming update

That was fun! The last level almost made me tap out, but I got into the brazier room!

Only critique is the blurry text. Great game!

Thanks for playing! (And completing)

This is a really really great game! Is this pico-8? It's really quite well done. I love the way you introduce new mechanics and they all feel very nice to use together. The sword and the vine were quite unique, and I especially liked that the sword had multiple uses (and none of them were combat hehe). Only thing I would mention is that if you're in the air you can drop multiple seeds and grow a whole bunch of vines at once, but that's not really an issue because the rooms were so well designed around the abilities you have. I'm very impressed with the pacing. And the art was nice as well. Beautiful game, super fun, I'd love to see more.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for such an in depth review. The game was specifically made to resemble a Pico-8 game but is actually made in Gdevelop.

Really nice game! The mechanics were really interesting, I had a lot of fun! Good job!

Very interesting mechanics. Apart from the obvious bugs, I think the game also has great visuals and vibes.

I really like the sound effects, but somehow I wish you also added music. I think a fitting theme would elevate this project.

Developer

Thanks for playing! I fully agree on the music aspect, just didn't make it into the game.

This was really fun! I like the mechanics a lot, especially using the sword to make your own platform. I felt really challenged in the last room where I had to make use of all the mechanics the previous rooms taught me. Great job!

Developer

Thanks for playing. I'm glad you noticed the difficulty curve

Really fun, solid collection of levels and mechanics!

I like the combination of sliding momentum and climbing

I ran into a small bug, but thankfully it was only visual:

The "bubble" effect for the sword throw doesn't despawn, so if you throw it enough time the screen becomes covered in bubbles and obscure the actual platforms a lil if you spam it like me lol

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! Yeah I know about the bubbles glitch and have a fix ready to drop

This game doesnt receive the love it deserves! Really had fun, played almost all of it (rage quit at that level when I had to go up two floors in 20 seconds - probably would go back if it had a save function) but can tell you that the game is REALLY REALLY GOOD. The retro graphics, the mechanics are all lovely. Good job! One of my favourites :)

Submitted(+1)

oh ,really liked the shadows. I was feeling like a solar eclipse when going in front of the lights :)

Developer

Thanks for playing! The room where you rage quit is the final room so I made it extra difficult but I might have gone overboard 😂

This game is really cool! I really liked the idea of the sword not being a weapon. I ended up unable to finish this game, because the furthher I progressed, the more i lagged, which really sucked because I wanted to see how it ended. The movement felt a little slippery, but I think that was intentional. I also got a jump with coyote time that was a little after the point where I would have expected coyote time to have ended, but there's no time to fine tune that for a jam. There were a lot of jumps where I ALMOST made it up the ledge, but didn't, and had to wait for a ledge grab. This didn't feel great, but my game was running REALLY slowly so this took like two seconds, it probably would have been less annoying without the lag I was experiencing. Amazing work this this game, I wish I could have finished it!

Developer

Thanks for playing! I figured I'd give the player ample coyote time to make things easier. The game might have a memory leak causing the lag, which I'll look into.

Loved a lot! The mechanics are so good, I love the fact that you can throw the sword not just to grab it but to activate stuff as well, it was a nice touch. The art and the music are pretty cool as well. I fell too many times at the beginning but couldnt stop playing it for the world. Great job!

Developer

Thanks for playing! I appreciate you noticing the sword mechanics

I loved the ending, kind of would have liked to do a NG+ >_<

Getting the different abilities thought the climb was great and the lighting was very cool, but I cannot express with words how good is the ledge grab >_> the particles combined with that meaty SFX, idk I really feel like the game could use some more ledges just to be able to grab them! Then again the sword is kind of a pocket ledge so maybe I'm just being silly lol

The physics were annoying at first, almost lost it at the first jump where you can fall all the way down and have to repeat a couple of screens, but endured mainly because of the ledge grab SFX and ended up finishing the game.  At that point I got used to the physics and ended up kind of liking them, so I guess I don't know where am I going with this...?

My only real issue were the blurry letters, the camera man really needs some glasses

Overall great game, amazing presentation and fun gameplay, good job!

Developer(+1)

I thought of implementing NG+ but it would've taken additional programming time that wasn't worth it. I find the idea of the ledge grab SFX being so good that you carried on hilarious. Thanks for playing!

Submitted(+1)

it was really fun. I loved how you could grab onto the edges of platforms

Developer

Lots of people loving the ledges. Thanks for playing!

Submitted(+1)

The ledge grabbing is an interesting mechanic. The controls are a struggle, I felt I was fighting them as much as I was trying to overcome the level. But the design is solid and I could see losing hours to this game.

Developer

Thanks for playing.

Submitted(+1)

I don't know why but the ledge crabbing sound just feels so satisfying! Great game I had so much fun, and enjoyed the different mechanics put to together. Really good job!

Developer

Thanks for playing. I am proud of the ledge grab sfx haha

Submitted(+1)

Nice game! The light system and art style look really well! But the movement feels a bit odd because the character's movements feel a bit too heavy; maybe increasing character acceleration might make the game more fun to play!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! Noted on the character movement

Submitted(+1)

Great game, I love the different upgrades like the sword and in general the grab mechanic, they are so fun to play with .
