Newbie?

Experienced

Nope - I've completed at least one game jam before.

How does your game fit the theme?
The player character is experiencing a neverending nightmare, and needs to escape for their morning to "just get started".

I loved this game! Personally, I'd prefer to play itch.io games in-browser, but this was really worth downloading. I liked the design and visual style, very nice. I also liked the momentum mechanic, it felt really good to use, but I felt like the enviroment was kind of "wrong" for it, because it was too slippery and I'd keep falling off the platforms, especially when trying to collect the little clocks. I also felt like the walking animation made it feel a little clunky although otherwise it felt smooth. I feel like having the character do a skating motion when at full speed would've looked better. Overall though, I liked the game and it was fun to play! Will play again! :)

great game. really liked the main character design.

if you don’t mind, could you take a look at mine as well?

I like the visuals quite a bit even though it's simplistic. I like the momentum mechanics but I also think if you want to make it like a high-speed game you would need to play with the camera a lot, and that's a challenge on its own.

For this type of game, I think the arrow keys for movement would feel better. I was straining to keep the WASD pressed but also pressing the other buttons for other functions.

Developer

@snacksgg said the same thing and forgot to add the bindings :S The diagonal movement and the controls is what we should defnimprove, thanks for the feedback :)

Fun game, the graphics are good and I love the momentum mechanic, so nice to skip platforms when you understand how to control the character well. Only thing is that even tho it's a design choice moving mostly in a diagonal is kind of a challenge to me

Fun platformer with really good visuals, really enjoyed it.

This is one I'm really interested in possibly offering more feedback for, the problem is that all of the feedback I could give is subjective. The game is great as is, and there's nothing wrong with it, I'm just a huge nerd for platforming games and like talking about the fluidity and rigidity of platformers, as well as how games can incorporate both. It's really interesting to design a platformer, but for what it is it serves its purpose really well.

Developer

go ahead. we’ll take what we take :) we were a bit improvising the movement on this one to keep the speed.

Lovely game with soothing music (quite strange for a speed based game but refreshing !)
The animations and level design are really good (also thank you for adding the little shadow under the character ^^)

Developer

thank you for playing and the kind words!!

really cool concept and would honestly love to see where you would take it next with more time for it. the feel of the game was very warm/cozy and very smooth. I love these types of speed games, i played alot of speed run 4 on roblox and i get a similliar feeling from this game and LOVE IT. took some time to adjust to the perspective and controls (keyboard) and i think with some polish to it it will be perfect. only think i lacked is SFX, loved the baground music but it felt quiet without jumping and landing sounds, Also would love more of an challange - moving platforms, enemies? less time maybe. could take it into a roque-like with each "sleep" being different maps or say powers (for a 10 day gameJam absolutly enough content, just some suggestions for the future). Overall a great idea, execution and feel from the game. Please continue with these types of games. :D

Developer(+1)

There is a footstep and landing sound! I’ve never done audio in a game so I couldn’t figure out the right equalization and I think you can only hear them with headphones? Or the sfx somehow got reset, it was like a last hour thing to add because I had the same lack as you. Thx for the feedback, we’ll definitely tweak those sfx. Also pickup sfx…

Developer(+1)

speed run 4 was definitely an inspiration for me! and the game actually was gonna be a roguelike before we scoped down to a pure platformer lol. thanks for the suggestions and the kind words!

Really cute concept, I speedran it skipping a lot of platforms, and I really enjoyed it! Some polish on the character animations would improve the general feeling a lot!

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

When one manages to do big jumps and crazy skips is when its the most satisfying. I wouldve LOVED to add an online leaderboard for this. I keep wkndering what everyones times are

Nice entry, very close to being really good. The controls are very snappy which is a good start for this type of game, but I feel like the levels aren't quite made for the mechanics. I would like to spend most of the levels in a fast and satisfying flow state, but instead I stumble quite a lot. Your character is also quite small, so when the controls are this sharp, hitting small objects like the timer pickups is quite hard. But I think if these issues were fixed, the game could be really good, and I had a good time playing overall.

Developer(+1)

thank you for the detailed feedback! will definitely tweak the levels a lot if we continue working on the game. i was tasked with level design a few days before deadline and had never done it before haha. glad you enjoyed it!

Developer(+1)

Actually one extra, bigger collision box for pickups is a great idea, dunno why I didn’t think of it.

Submitted(+1)

I didn't realize there was a timer running out just as i was about to finish sdojfois. The render is so good and the gameplay feels really smooth.

Developer (1 edit)

Hey at least if you run out of time you start at the last level entrance when you go to sleep again :)

I think we should’ve made the time tighter so one realises it’s a speed game. Probably lowering the starting time and adding a +time when reaching the level.

Thank you for the comments!

I think with a little polishing these controls could carry a whole game and the art was cute.

The diagonal perspective definitely threw my coordination off. It meems my brain cannot compute what buttons to press if single presses don’t move you along the screen’s axes XD

Developer(+1)

yeah it was a challenge to try and design around for sure. it helps a lot to play with controller if you can!

Submitted (2 edits) (+2)

Playing with a controller helps with the coordination, but my speed got reset constantly, which isn’t too great if you need to jump over a large gap. I don’t know if it’s an issue with my controller (I have only one so I can’t check with another) or with the game, but the game is very hard to play that way. If I just ignore the speed resetting, it’s a great game! And with the joystick of a controller much less frustrating to play.
[EDIT]: An idea for how to design around the angle could be to either allow the player to turn their camera or to turn the inputs by 45°, meaning e.g. [W] moves up right, [A] up left, etc.

Developer(+1)

yeah, i believe either your controller has stick drift or the two control schemes are conflicting. i actually had the same problem with my controller's drift while playtesting hah, we just didn't have time to fix it unfortunately. thank you for your feedback!

Developer (2 edits) (+1)

Mmmh thanks for the thorough report! I guess if we add input detection to disable one or the other, the bug would stop. By the end of the jam period we realized the game is in reality a racimg game disguised as a platformer, so if you collide or move in tbe opposite direction the speed stops to a halt. Which apparently breaks controller support if inputs conflict, we’ll look into it for the future. Thanks!!

Cool Game, it is fun!
