Yes - I'm new to game jams!

How does your game fit the theme?
The game consists on mining an asteroid field and processing as much resources as possible before a solar flare makes you flee the system. Every game sesion is starting over again and again each time a little more prepared.

The game has no save system so you literally need to get started every time you close the game (Yeah Thats the reason, and not that i didn't know how to program it).

Pretty solid visuals for your first game! I like space games so I wish it has sounds to make it more enjoyable. I actually didn't manage to get upgrades, I thought it was a weird choice for the game to start you at 0 damage, instead of just 1. So I was just flying around for 90 seconds, and I didn't quite know what to do haha.

A full-fledged built-in tutorial could be nice but if it's too close to the deadline I think you could just resort to write out the tutorials and what the players need to know to play the game in the description of your project page (which is what i did).

Either way, good job on finishing and submit, but I reckon there's still a lot left to do on this game, so I hope you would continue to improve on it some more!

That's weird, you should have 1 damage at the start of the game, and the smallest asteroids have 5 HP so it should take you 5 hits to destroy an asteroid at the start. If you could i'd like for you to try it again and confirm that it's still happening because other people that have played it said nothing about not doing damage at the start.

I wanted to do a tutorial but didn't have time at the end, the controls are pretty simple tho, you move with wasd and that's it, it autoshoots aiming at the mouse.

Yeah i want to keep working on it when the jam ends.

Thanks for taking the time to try it out!

Ok I tried it again and it works like you said.

I suppose the initial confusion stems from the fact that the game is lacking "juice" right now. In other words, it lacks feedback to the player's actions. In my first play I would shoot one asteroid and the bullet just simply vanish without anything else so I assume nothing happened and then I tried shooting a different asteroid, same result, not knowing that the asteroids are supposed to have an amount of HP and you have to repeatedly shoot it a few times. In a complete game they would do things like flashing, showing a number of damage dealt or play a sound when you hit something etc..

On the tutorial side, I did figure out for myself the controls. You should still just write it out in the description anyway though, you should never assume other players knowing anything about your project. You can update the game page right now even during the jam.

This is all to say that it's ok, it's a jam game and nobody expects a perfect game. It's just feedback that you can take for future development of this project or things to be more mindful of for other projects.

I apreciate you taking the time to try the game again ^^

Regarding the feedback on the hits, my intention was or having some type of animation or having a healthbar but as many other things i ran out of time and couldn't do it, but after the Jam i plan to take all the feedback and implement that and things that i wanted to but couldn't put for this Jam.

And yeah i will use all what i learned in this Jam to make the game (or future games) better, that's for sure, thanks again for taking the time to play it again,  and responding :D

Great work! Nice little incremental game, the concepts at work behind it are really nice. I think my primary suggestion would to be a bit more lenient with resource conversion in the early game, either in cost of the upgrade or the starting value, since it the largest limiting factor (I think in best case scenario, without any rate upgrades you can get about 50 at most, meaning you'd have to abstain from purchasing for a run in order to buy any of them). That's all game balance and numbers though, great work for your first jam, you should be very proud.

Developer

Yeah, the values were done last minute, to something that i thought was "balanced", but it wasn't thoroughtfuly tested, my initial idea was to implement prestiges, and more upgrades but at the end didn't had time to do it.

Thanks for the comment and suggestions tho! I plan to keep working on it after the jam is over and make it a fleshed out game one day ^^

Nice game! its a little unclear of what flee the system means, I assume there is a resource requirement though. upgrades are cool and game flow is pretty solid

Developer (1 edit)

Yeah, I wanted to do some type of tutorial but at the end didn't have time, the flee the system is when you cannot withstand the solar flare and have to go to the upgrade page, maybe it had been clearer if I said "flee the asteroid field" or something on those lines.

The resources need processing one to withstands the solar flare (the shield icon) and the other to buy upgrades (the white with red border) and you need to balance a bit how many you loot from each.

Thanks a lot for the comment, it means more than you think ☺️☺️
