The art is pretty cool! The movement could be fine tuned as it felt weird and some of the controls were annoying. The music is good and the concept is really neat!
Let me preface this by writing the following:
The game was overall not fun for me. The boss kind of remedied that.
Enemies don't have any sort of collision with the player or other enemies. This makes them either very threatening or almost completely harmless, depending on how you approach them.
"Given the opportunity, players will optimize the fun out of a game." This quote came to mind as I figured out the best way to defeat the enemies:
I really tried to beat the game properly first but there were so many small issues:
Nitpicks:
The Good:
The boss was easy but fun. All I had to do was dodge when it got close enough then walk around a bit to avoid the projectiles. Nonetheless, dodging the huge attack felt great.
Sorry for the mostly negative review. I'm not taking the time to write all of this to be mean but because I see some great potential there and hope you can improve upon it. Or, again, I might just not be the target audience.
Regardless of all that, I'm certain you put a lot of work into this game and the fact that you uploaded it in time for this game jam is great. Congratulations!
Hej, great thanks for your feedback, i really apriciate it! Enemis shoud not have the collision, that was intentional. Yes, that gives a really good way do avid attacks, i tried to balance it, but unfortuanetly it's really hard, not enough time. About players attack weight and parry feel - had some trouble with it, cos of sound effect difference after adding music, just had not enouph time to redo it, it was really differnt in editor.
I know that "not enough time" is bad way to say smth, but it's game jam, and i had only 1 month expiriance in game dev before it. Abot parring being punishing - must be, as in any souls-like, maybe too punishing but always rewarded. Two good parry is all you need (hmm, maybe souls gamer just take over in that momet, for me in this game it's so easy that i forgot about others expirience).
Only went in attack phase when see you - it's was, hmm, intentionally lefted cheese to give good chance for players who will stuck on that phase to beat it. Also there is another alight improvmense - when you consume a hearth it not only heal you, but slightly buff max HP and when i was testing sometimes that gives so great feeling of "killed enemy on last HP";)
And yeah, of course, i made mistakes, but it just great opportunity to improve myself!
So, once more - great thanks for playing and rewieving my game! I will notice every comment, becouse this jam and expirience doing this game inspired me to make a big game, and every moment, every little issue that were notised gives juat more courage to become better!!
Very nice pixel art β¨
Unfortunately didn't really enjoy it much tho, still needs more time in the oven. Movement feels sluggish at times, I'd suggest allowing melee attacks in the air, other than that I think most of my concern has already been expressed by other comments, I have more to say but I'll leave it at that for now. As a fellow newbie, congratulation on finishing your first game! π
I love the art for this game! Really awesome and the different skeletons were great! That final boss is pretty tough lol, I thought maybe I could parry those shots but I don't think I was able to. Pretty cool idea with the gauntlet before the boss fight.
My small suggestion would be to let the player get used to the controls in like a small area leading up to the gauntlet would be good to add, maybe even introduce each type of skeleton before then locking you into the room with the gauntlet would have helped a little.
Definitely a really cool game and I could totally see adding in different enemies, maybe even different weapons/abilities and tons of really cool designed bosses as the designs are really awesome here!
This is a cool little project. The art is nice as others have said and it's cohesive, music is nice too.
I really liked the direction you're taking the movement, though it could do with some fine-tuning maybe, and being able to swing in mid-air would be great.
Also a little bit more direction could go a long way, like an indicator of how many more enemies need to be killed for this phase, etc. (like maybe start with ~20 skeletons on the ground, then as an enemy spawn one gets removed, it could be visual feedback that the player is progressing, just an idea)
Overall this is cool, good job and congrats on your first game jam submission!
Love the art, great job with your first UR project! Being able to attack while airborne might be a nice mechanic to add if you continue development.
Very nice pixel art. There's a lack of control with movement. Sometimes jumping would send me flying across the map. The parry can also accidentally drain your stamina to zero if you hold it since it will spam the button instead of firing once like the hit does. Great job \ (β’β‘β’) /
Pretty impressive for your fist game and only 9 days! you can be proud.
Combat felt really well, here are some suggestions I would do:
- When I hold the block key the hero blocks in quick succession, I would keep the shild up if the player holds the button but stop the stamina regeneration. Also all damage (or a part) while blocking is count to stammina not health
- The roll can be shorter, as long as there is no enemy which requires the player to cover a big distance (like a big enemy)
- Heavy and slow attacks or maby a range attack could be fun
I also love the artstyle, but it seams you used sprites with different resolution. This can be ok but try to keep at least the characters (enemy and player) the same size and background the same size.
One more tip: try using text boxes for popup text, this makes the text more readable.
Keep up the good work and have fun on your futur journey as a game dev :)
Thank you! About bloking - it was counter) yep, maybe i should make it some bigger, but i had no intention to add exect blocking. I tried and was so imbalance even with big stamina consuming that i just cut it out from game)
Neat style! Combat felt pretty good too, but that spear guy is kinda strong lmao. I couldn't really make good use of the parry unfortunately, I bet it's easier if you're actually able to parry. I was also kinda confused at first about what to do, maybe some counter on the statue would be cool to show how many more enemies you've got to fight before the boss spawns. Maybe also some hit sounds, for the enemy and the player. I found a pretty cheesy way to get to and kill the boss, but it was a fun experience! Really well done for your first jam, congrats!
Hello! Spear skeleton is the gardest with the smallest parry time:) It was planned like that. Yep, i haven't enought time to make three things that i planned - show how much health you need to consume to ublock energy walls (and there is way to make boss fight really easy in two ways - left one or two necromansers to spawn skeletons get from them more and more MAX hp (hearts not only heal, thay give u some max xp) or just good parry - he has really big stun time. ) and also i wanted to add some effect wich will show that opponents are stunned above their heads. About sounds - there thms happaned with some of them while building and i am trying to found wat was that cos in the editor all of them where different.
And can i ask you about cheese u found to kill boss? I love good cheese:)))
This is your first jam game, are you kidding me?!
This is peak! I love Souls-like Metroidvanias so this was right up my street.
The pixel graphics are awesome, especially love the sprite and the smooth animations. Did you make all these yourself or are they pre-existing assets?
You even put a dodge roll in there, awesome job! The enemies are generous with health pickups but I do think the stamina regen could do with being upped a bit.
Other than that this is a great game, amazing work :)
i am really AWFUL in painting usual or pixelart, music also not mine, so that are pre-existing assets)
I really love the idea, I went in blindly without checking the settings :s Which should have been named controls btw, the combat system is super well implemented and both bars were immediatelly clear, health and stamina, however I just wish there was a death animation instead of running around when your health falls below zero, and also the enemies sometimes spawned right on top of the player, maybe a brief animation before spawning them in would have been nice :) Also it felt like rolling and attacking in mid-air should have been possible, Although I love how diverse the enemies were, a ranged attacker would also been nice (other than boss) but overall a fun game :D
Nice aesthetic, good effort on balancing the boss, turned out quite well
Oh and btw if you have the time you could try my game as well, I would love some feedback
Great game!
Really cool graphics! The combat and movement felt really snappy. And I am a sucker for that old medieval gothic aesthetic. Great work!
Thx. I tried my best. Really much work was putted into Boss and his actions. It was hard to make him not too easy and not too hard)
