How does your game fit the theme?
Our game fits the game jam theme of Just Get Started by implementing only one single mechanic. JUMP. The player must press and hold spacebar to keep going up, and with the constraints of vertical walls on the side, the only way is UP. Our team believed that "just get started" means that the player must start doing something as soon as they are in the game. From the player's perspective, they only have one option. There are no side quests, no extra mechanics, just one objective. That is why we believe we fit the game jam theme perfectly

Fun game! Straightforward controls and super well polished. Definitely felt the rage trying to get to the top LOL

Solid game you've got thus far between theming, mechanics, visuals. Comes together quite well. I will say while playing it encountered two bugs that involved my shovel hat hitting a wall, staying in that wall, and me bouncing off to the other side of the level (the hat did disappear after landing). Then another where I had hit my characters head on the bottom of a platform and landed lower off then where my shovel hat had landed. Don't know if those were intentional but just making note if they weren't.

Beyond that, very solid game all around for a first game jam, do hope that they can be some more interesting mechanics added to it to come if you do end up expanding upon it but otherwise, great stuff. Keep up the good work

The game is extremely well polished. Simple controls, but really fun! My only feedback is to give a better indication of what button to press. I stumbled for 3 minutes as i didn't know you had to HOLD space.

I was doing pretty well (after some struggles at the beginning) but then I fell down sooo much I was like ' :) '. Great rage game and the robot is very very cute, congrats on finishing your first gamejam!

AMAZING GAME 🔥
I'm a sucker for rage game, the whole time I just felt like this game was made for me, big fan of "Jump King" and I can sense some inspiration haha, honestly I would definitely reconsider letting the player control the direction, because waiting for the angle to align where you want it really takes so much time, it builds up for sure, I'd suggest a mouse direction solution or a A/D snap adjustments, would really speed up those slow moments, and I think most of my concerns have already been expressed by the others in the comments, I agree with most of them.
But don't get me wrong, this is a lovely game haha, a little bit more polish and ironing out the collision issues, you'd have streamers and content creators playing this game! As a fellow rage game newbie dev, amazing job on finishing your first game! 🎉

I fell down two biomes and raged ᕙ( ᗒᗣᗕ )ᕗ Brutal, but fun game. Good job (つ╥﹏╥)つ

Wow what a great rage game! I love these styles of games and you somehow managed to create a very unique one! The art style is also incredible and I love the animation of the character when they launch themselves. I does get quite difficult but it is a rage game after all haha!

I found this game super fun and addicting! The simplicity of the jump mechanics was intuitive and easy to get hooked into, it reminded me a lot of like Neopets minigames back in the day. Great job, especially for a first game jam!

This was really fun surprisingly, taking the fact that I don't like this types of games, it was actually great to play TOP! The artsyle as well as sound design was really good, the mechanics and playability is pretty straightforward so there's no confusing 'how to's! Great job, this was an amazing first try!

Fun and simple game, Aiming would have been good for those small platforms as it was very easy to bounce farther down. Great art too!

ok This was funn and its a neat game with a nice mechanic. The art is good too and the sound effects match, maybe some light music could help teh atmosphere? I played the game and was making good progress but then I fell. Oh when I fell... I tried to quickly catch up but lost even more progress.I exited  the game hahaha.. It was really fun but I just couldn't handle te rage haha. I think you guys had avision which you nailed and thisis insanely good for a first game jam. Really good work!

Feedback time!

First off I love the art! Shovel guy is so cute! And I love their animations, especially when they dive after the shovel! They look so happy^^

I think it would've been nice to have the jump gauge indicator be bigger or close to the character instead of the corner left. When trying to go right, you have to look away from where you're trying to go to gauge your jump, which doesn't feel intuitive.

There is a quite sharp difficulty spike when the very small platforms show up. I gave it a good try, but I did end up frustrated over losing progress. A checkpoint could fix this, but if the intent is to get something similar to Getting Over It With Bennett Foddy, where losing huge chunks of progress is part of the intended user experience,  I think you could still compromise by having larger platforms to catch you if you fall from the tiny platform section, or to have the difficulty and frustration be part of the game's identity and branding, as to better prepare players for the challenge! I do think this difficulty spike is a bit too much too early, since the player is still getting used to the mechanics and experimenting with their character's abilities.

Despite this difficulty spike, I had a lot of fun!!

I also noticed that you did not rename your unity build name, was this an oversight or do you not know how to do it? If so I could show you if you'd like! (discord: meerlylume)

Thank you very much for all of your feedback! Glad you enjoyed it!

We did think of moving the gauge indicator to be next to the player, but didn't manage to get back to it before the jam ended.

Definitely agree about the sharp difficulty spike, if we had a bit more time to playtest it definitely would've been changed up. There aren't any checkpoints, as the gameplay loop consists of improving your best time after you beat the game, although that has proven to be challenging to everyone who has played the game.

Most of us haven't used Unity before so we didn't think of renaming the build so it was an oversight, but it's also because we ran out of time to make sure everything is clean, which is also why we didn't manage to get a web version ready. Thank you for the offer to help though!

Cute little rage game - i love the protagonist art style.

One advice - first time i started the game I could not see the character due to my resolution and aspect ratio. Next time make sure to test on different aspect ratios or have a correct viewport scaling in mind.

Great submission for a first time jam!

Developer

It's most of our team's first game jam and making a game ourselves, so things like checking aspect ratio weren't on our radar, and by the time we noticed it only works on 16:9 aspect ratio we had no time left to fix it :(

But glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for leaving your feedback!
