Election Strategies (Probably Some Spoilers)

For people who have managed to win the election and get through to the epilogue, here is a thread to discuss some of how you went about it, without spoiling any of the bigger secrets revealed afterwards.

What general approaches worked well for you, or didn't? Who made good allies? Helpful ministers? Favorite fiances?

Well at first I experimented and did some tests on which people made good cabinet members and who I could easily get to pledge their votes to me.

I didn't train knowledge skills at all and left that to my cabinet (No nepobabies allowed). I hired someone early on to be my temporary cabinet member for imperial history with the plan to drop her later on because I knew I could finish her quest easily on a return trip to her sector.

I also grabbed a good science man since turn economy is key and double movement is GOATED.

I kept my two childhood friends on-board for a while but dropped one of them when I found someone with a GOATED skill.

Kxenia is my second GOAT (First is science man) so I had to have her on my team until the end despite her mediocre stats (Not beating the nepotism allegations).

The Star Admiral sadly didn't do much for me given how late I got him though the stats I gained in the process of getting him turned out to be pretty useful in general.

I also blocked some of my opponent's early momentum by recruiting some of the people I noticed they had a tendency to get first.

For my strategy in general I took dead dad's advice to heart.
Focus on developing Zorana's skills and get a cabinet of competent reliable people to pick up the slack elsewhere.

(1 edit)

On my first full run, I kept Mirelle as Commerce Logothete. Expected her to be really good given the mining world, and I didn't understand what 30 meant on the minister scale yet. Later, discovered she was very good at Law, and started picking her up for this whenever I wasn't planning to pick Rejt.

Similarly, I took Ozara for Law early on, before discovering she was very good at Bureaucracy and taking her for that whenever I wasn't routing through the Heru system for Grojdana.

Science pretty much always goes to Stoyan or Lorkas, depending on my starting angle. Lorkas is the best I've found for Media, though Sola seems indistinguishably close if I need Lorkas for Science.

I haven't found anyone better than Khdarr for economics. Every time I've tried to offer her Law, she's indicated that there could be some very interesting things which happen, but I haven't yet found a way to win her approval enough to have that as an option.

Speaking of spicier options, Erilott was quite good at Bureaucracy, and is absolutely radiating ulterior motives. I want to find out what happens there. Radomil has the best Galactic Relations of anyone I've found, but is extremely unhappy at the callout needed to make it possible. I want to find out what happens, but it's going to take a lot of planning to have the skills needed to bring him in early. I reverted a run where I picked up Krovos for Spiritual advisor after the backlash, but I want to find out what happens. I've mostly been investigating my Novan heritage, so I think I want to finish that before I start bypassing his personal quest. Very keen to see if having Krovos on board makes something interesting happen when meeting Stoyan or doing their personal quest.

Letting Kxenia go makes me feel like a terrible friend, so I haven't experimented much without her, unless I avoid appointing her in the first place. Having her around for her interest in Nova seems pretty important, too, though exactly what I learn can be masked by how or whether I interact with Nova or the shamans, or if we pursue a dramatic roleplay marriage instead. Out of character, I think I have a pretty good idea of what's up with my heritage and why, though I can't get myself to realize much before the election, and learning the most in a single run leaves me deeply upset and traumatized at the end.

I haven't had much luck trying to get anything out of the rumor Vasilly gave me after the opera. Going back with all-around high arts and maxed music wasn't enough, so I might see if I can make something happen by being in a particular mood. I wonder if something more happens if I'm crushing on him rather than Kxenia.

Most of the romance options have been unappealing. I tried an engagement with Fire to make would-be grandma happy, and mostly to see if anything interesting happens during the "exchange" if I already had test results by then. I don't think anything changed, though. I'm not unhappy with the finale with Fire, though the final transmission's commentary hurt, when I certainly didn't feel any shame with Kxenia.

The prospect of romance with Jade seems both scandalous, and extremely funny. I definitely didn't have the build for it at the time, but it is one of the first things I want to try on the next mechabird run. I don't know if I'll feel shame or pride at the end!

Sometimes I see the option of a romance with Krovos, sometimes I don't. I guess that depends on the skills taken before I first meet him? That might end up being even more of a wild run than a heretical advisor, though at least so far I haven't had an engagement be enough for someone to travel with you.

Generally, I don't think I've had any trouble with the election itself. Pretty much all of my runs involved taking basic empathy and etiquette, and just not being obviously rude when meeting people seems to be enough. On a very recent and unexpectedly lethal run, I was still facing assassins after publicly unmasking one conspirator, and Korundi couldn't say anything any more specific than ~"danger is everywhere don't take any risks be mindful of everything everywhere". I assume I somehow tripped quite a lot of flags. I finally managed to thread the needle through to the election, and despite the extremely intense electoral anger leading up to it, still got the rather interesting result of 20 votes for, 9 against, 0 abstentions.

In the one run I made since, I was deliberately rude I think greeting the mostly uncourted Myrkkans last while favouring all the races I didn't need to worry about, actively full passing social phases in the deep space spot nearest the removed neutral zone for every turn after the opera, giving terrible or "don't care" responses to the "what is your stance" questions, taking the "final chance to sway" option of giving a tone deaf speech with fairly low social skills about Novan heritage that ended in closing my eyes and standing presumably uncomfortably silent and still in front of everyone pretending I was radiating light (I assume it was pretending, given prior attempts had me opening my eyes to nothing) in the engineering outfit (which is absolutely adorable and I think I will struggle to not wear it even in very inappropriate situations when available oh my goodness even the screwdrivers are colorful and coordinated aaaaaa), fully prepared to deliberately lose the vote to smash, grab, and run for Nova with top tier understanding of operational systems, layout, and getaway piloting, still made me Empress with 18 votes in favour! I think I might rollback and try again after mentally bracing myself to deliberately denounce allies, but I've never lost the vote in any run, even actively trying here. I don't think this was intentional, but this feels much less a dramatic finale than the duel for the fate of Nova in OG LTTQ. Maybe I'm just not being evil enough? :(

Denouncing three friendly people got the votes for me down to 17. Denouncing seven people, literally everyone I'd met who hadn't formally pledged (totals: 9 pledged to me, 7 pledged to Lukomir, 7 denounced by me, 6 unmet, 1 now disqualified for attempting to assassinate me), got the votes for me down to 15. After the closed recess, it became 18 votes for me. So either Lukomir's pledged electors defected, or people I'd sent burn notices of were still voting for me anyway. :')

Firing every elector in my cabinet on top of this finally caused an election deadlock! 11 votes for me, 13 for Lukomir, in the first round. Post-recess, 11 votes for me, 15 for Lukomir. No opportunity to cut and run though, just a game over assassination, but without any notified checks. Not sure if there's anything more I can do, or if that's just what happens after an election stalemate.

Strongly implied there is a situation I get to make a choice with "If you lose though, your options are fewer. He did give you a contact method and a promise of help. [...] thought exile was worth it. Will you? Of course, if you succeed, you won't need to make that choice.". Maybe that means I need to find a way to let Lukomir fully win, while still being primed to leave. Maybe I need fewer fully hostile enemies after a stalemate. Maybe it's not possible, and I jumped to conclusions.

I haven't found anyone better than Khdarr for economics

According to my notes (which are a bit hastily done, so there's definitely a chance I have some errors), Ozara performs better then Khdarr at economics with a 75.

Oooh, good catch!

There’s a lot of assassination attempts after reaching for all of the people with big numbers, compared to when I was just looking for friendly ministers without red flags. I’ll try to map out cliques to see if there’s a collection of good enough ministers without the infighting.

Once you make that clique map, I would love to see it!

I was thinking about putting my notes in obsidian for this reason... I may have to do it for real now

So, Vahter gives Galactic Relations 50, and with him it’s possible (though very expensive) to push your personal Galactic Relations all the way to 100 before your dream on turn 13.

Many interesting things then happen.

...it occurs to me that, remembering LLTQ, I started planning out my emotions immediately after being shown where the bonuses were, and so my skills might be higher than expected. I also didn't put many lessons into knowledge skills, outside of a little Spirtuality before meeting her All-Holiness to make a good first impression, an emergency rollback lesson in Blade (Basic) to not die inside a frozen shattered planetoid, pushing Intrusion to 50 before a critical turn-locked test, or pushing my personal Science to know how to scare off a sea monster because my Logothete could not help me when I was off on a joyride, though I could still receive help evaluating beetles while alone. Not sure what the rules are there.

Though, high skills aren't always good. The Empire won't be as happy if Rippling Eternity likes me too much to ask a favor.

I wonder how I can learn more about Heru II. Even if I complete Robe of Ice/Starlight Needle's personal quest via Science, complete Chapadoc's personal quest, and have Khdarr in cabinet as the Logothete of Commerce, I somehow lack connections there in the end. Maybe something interesting happens if I finally work out how to have Khdarr accept the Law portfolio, or have One Bite on as a firebrand minister, or if I can make Chapadoc uncomfortable by staying many turns or hosting the election there, or if I'm there when space-COVID happens.

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

> Not sure what the rules are there.

(We're not sure either, really, and do sometimes change our minds about individual challenges whether they should let you use a minister or not. Generally defaulting to 'yes' because that's what they're for, and then sometimes removing the bonus when it seems like you couldn't logically have prepared for that.)

Just got my first success, and have been dutifully starting my spreadsheet. Absolutely love picking up Sola, immediately firing her, and still keeping her vote. Makes me laugh every time I think about it. I was wondering if anyone had successfully gotten Chapadoc or Radomil on your council (or has confirmation that they'll refuse). They're the only two I have not been able to get a firm 'no' or their stats from.

You still get to keep her vote? That's so funny - I'll have to try that on a future playthrough!

I was able to get Radomil onto my council (either through Rhetoric or Menace). My notes say "galactic relations 60" for him, but fail to note if that is the only position he can be recruited into  or if it was the only position I tried him in.

I got the impression of a firm no from Chapadoc, but I definitely could be proven wrong.

It's not *guaranteed*, but recruiting her boosts her approval and if it's high enough when you fire her she'll still vote for you so it's not too difficult to do

(+1)

I have most combinations of people and positions I think. A few outstanding gaps, and a really big question mark over what it takes to get Khdarr into a Law position.

Chapadoc has always given me a firm no, at least.

It’s possible to get Radomil. I called out his surfer facade by saying I was a liar too. He has the best Galactic Relations (60) out of anyone I’ve found so far, though the tests to coerce him seem too hard for an early pick up. He’s really not happy about it, and likely spends his time lining the mood wheel with assassins if you do force him to stay close.

(1 edit)

I've been absolutely devouring this game! I still feel like I've got so much to uncover.

I've firmly settled into my early game strategy of Myrkka II for the easy personal request -> get interaction stats to decent, emotion stats if I have the wiggle room -> Myrkka I to get the easy Vahter and Krovos votes, and hopefully try and finagle one of the more finnicky electors while I'm at the planet. I wonder if I'm missing any special events by not going to other systems early game.

As for romances: the one with Ixil's daughter was pretty cute + helped me snag an otherwise uncooperative elector. No particular feelings on Fire. Vasily was fun - especially having him as my concubine for Eve, which gave some neat epilogue text. Kxenia was adorable and I'm intrigued by her desire to have a villainess romance, but also it is rough having to tank her 30 skill points. Oletko's son was intriguing.

Eve is the marriage I keep snagging on. The implications of her end card! Does anybody know if it's at all possible to marry her daughter, Star? I've tried proposing that, but Eve either wants me to marry her son or, if I insist I'm not interested in men, will just offer up herself. I'm decently convinced that Star is our half-sister via our mother, and that's why Eve is insistent upon us not marrying. The drama that genetic test result could bring...!

Eve in general is a character who I've struggled to figure out the motivations for. Once I was able to get a personal quest from her, but I didn't have the stats for it. In other runs, her negotiations either jump to marriage or just straight out deny me. No clue what variables cause her quest to become available!

Also, I've found that the Viper is my safest pick for pet. The social moods it can auto get you to are useful for any sort of run.

Eve has given me a personal quest whenever I’m already engaged. Maybe that’s the condition?

Finally managed to win the election after seeing some advice on the other thread of how to go about winning the election

As I had put it to my friends, "high speech with low int is winning me the day so far".  I generally focused on getting high enough Empathy/Etiquette and then Rhetoric early enough before working too much on the other skills, since being able to talk to people well in a game about forging alliances is never a bad idea.

But yeah, as it turns out, having a competent cabinet really does make everything easier, since it's too time-consuming to get Zorana's own knowledge up to par compared to just hiring someone good. On my first run, I wanted to hold off offering cabinet positions until I met everyone, but then realized that the game is too short for that. I feel like prioritizing getting a good Science and Bureaucracy person as early as possible helps mechanically, though having a Commerce person early ended up making a lot of narrative things easier as well.

I haven't been especially inclined to offer Zorana's hand in marriage to anyone, even her friends. I'm honestly super suspicious of her friends even though they've been nothing but helpful and kind to her, but that's probably just a me issue.

Pet choice absolutely ended up shaping how I approached things, since knowing which moods I can access the easiest had me planning out which skills/electors to go for first. The Hawk is my favorite pet, but the Viper is probably going to be my go-to since I prefer focusing on social stats.

Second win! It seems that going Tharkas > Mrykka > Draug > Heru > Myrkka > Mau has been working for me so far. By the time I get to Mau, the Mau mostly like Zorana well enough to vote for her without too much fuss, and I find that the Heru/Draug side of the system has rather high checks for making good first impressions.

Zorana's hand in marriage, I was initially wary of engaging her to Fire, but turns out that 1) I like his design 2) it wasn't as risky a decision as I thought it would be.

Mood-wheel wise, I feel like the right side of the wheel generally has more threats than the left side? Though I guess that makes sense, since the bottom/right side of the wheel has Zorana be the most isolated or in situations more likely for her to be physically harmed, so those are probably the ones that make the most sense to stage an assassination for.

I got to the election once (after one loss at the election, and a few reloads for assassination reasons - they're a lot easier to deal with than in OG LLTQ but I can see how it might not seem so easy if you're stuck between two assassination attempts on the mood wheel). I went mostly Interaction+Emotion, which tended to be my go-to in LTTQ, with decent Stealth (and picked up the Leotard and the Training Outfit before the end as well).

I followed some advice on this thread - Myrkka II's personal quest, Myrkka I (where I tend not to do great. judicious Blackmail turned out weirdly positive), then after several turns of not feeling like I'm amounting to anything going for Draug for the Science, then down to Heru to open the planets, where I picked up Grojdana and got involved in Heru politics. I would love to delve deeper there. Then Neutral Space (the plot flew way over my head but some merchant goes free I guess), then Tharkas - which I hadn't even reached on my first attempt.

After that I returned to Myrkka I in time for Turn 24 (I need to skip that to see how badly it hurts Zorana), then down to the Tharkkan sector. By this time there was only one vote to pick up there and delving into the Elector's background made her a natural fit for one of my only open position among my advisors (I'd retained my friends as advisors because Student stats are better than 0 stats). This was too late in the game to be truly useful but that was a strong Council.

Up to Mau for Tulisti and see if having completed Krovos' quest makes any difference in Muistis' quest, then back to Tharkkan sector on the way to Heru sector. Lukomir stole two of the votes on Heru III, where I was planning to spend the last few turns, but it was too late to change plans. There's precious little time between the announcement that you won't be able to move and being unable to move (I find the last turns pretty punitive), and it wasn't immediately clear to me that "sector" referred to the Electors on that planet and not the Electors of the planet group (ex: Myrkka I + Myrkka II as opposed to just Myrkka I)

Then I accepted Vasily's offer to make him my concubine and reached the election with 17 votes and no betrothal. I'd been feeling like I was playing pretty aggressively (I consistently had twice as many promised votes as Lukomir) and juuuuuust squeaking by makes me think I'm not playing this as intended, especially with all the hanging plot threads.

Are there mechanics to get people voting for Lukomir to drop out or is it something that needs to be solved before they vote for him? I haven't figured out yet why the option to dwell into their BG etc remain open once their vite is secured by our opponent, when we can't do the same with our cabinet members. I haven't tried to offer Lukomir electors a cabinet position, but could you offer them a cabinet position to bait them into trying to murder you, then use that against them to prevent them from voting?

Given the need to secure votes the game feels it's at a more break-neck speed to fulfill the plot than LLTQ (that might be inexperience speaking), like there's less time to get things done.

Otoh I love the personal quests. They're so varied and cool! I LOVED the Dungeon's Master, what an absolute treat of a character dynamic there. The physical stats seem like they mostly come into play here. I have no idea what Ixil wants and that makes her pretty scary ngl.

(+1)

Mood wheel assassinations can usually be avoided by talking to Korundi, who pulls your mood to Cautious if there’s a lot of danger. I think I’ve only had one time where she didn’t bail me out when I was surrounded on the mood wheel: She warned me not to go anywhere I could be cornered while I was Secretive, and was facing death on both Negative and Determined. I’ve never faced a death check on Social or Compliant, so my early golden sneko runs left me oblivious to late stage assassination attempts while I was maxing out my social skills.

I’ve still never pressed the blackmail button. Maybe that helps.

You learn a lot if you make the most of your presents. One exception seems to be the Uuzgha’s snow globe, where setting up a display gave me an end where they rebuked all diplomatic advances, compared to being polite but avoiding deeper cultural exchange if I did nothing but let it sit in the vault.

You can poach Lukomir’s Kedrow colleagues if you’re very fast about completing their personal quests (only a few skill checks seem actually relevant for Zolok’s infiltration, and blast fishing is hilarious in Milan’s), and Milan will take a cabinet position if offered. It’s a lot of work in the crucial early turns, though.

I think in most runs I wrote off all “pureblood” Myrkkans except Mirelle (who is very kind), Krovos (who is kind of nuts and has a lot of enemies, but his personal quest just seems too important. I tried taking him as Spiritial advisor and it didn’t seem to do anything special, just the general malaise when people dislike someone), and Stoyan (who is just too useful as a science minister, though he has few friends and many enemies especially compared to Lorkas). I had to go back and check, since I wasn’t intentionally seeking out a diverse coalition, but that does seem to be what I’ve ended up with in practice. Maybe insulting the Myrkkans at reception wasn’t the political suicide I thought it was at the time.

Ixil finds the thought of bribes distasteful, but will easily vote for you without a pledge if you negotiate then claim you’re absolutely not trying to bribe a vote, you avoid bringing her enemies into your cabinet (all five of her enemies are very viable minister candidates), and you don’t overly offend Myrkkans in general. She will also pledge her vote for a cabinet position (though she’s not very good in any seat), or for an engagement. Mostly I’ve been content to ignore her and accept that she’ll eventually turn against me if I want a strong cabinet, though if I have a spare social action I’ll throw it at her to give the impression of squeaky clean hands and hopefully make Lukomir work for it.

I’ve yet to get a personal quest instead of in-negotiation dialogue from Erilott and Rippling Eternity. I’ve yet to get a personal quest instead of a “sure, I really like you already!” skip from Grojdana and Lorkas. I’ve yet to get anything other than “I hate bribes” from Rejt and Ixil. I’ve yet to get anything productive out of negotiations with Oletko, Ozara and Khdarr. I’ve yet to finish One Bite’s pilgrimage. Everyone else, I’ve been through their personal quest at least once.

I love Vahter’s quest. It’s a bit sad that you have to be pretty callous to see it. Even Vassily sent messages about being kind to myself on that run.

I feel like there’s more to Robe of Ice+Starlight Needle’s quest. I feel like there’s more to Radomil’s quest, there were a lot of branching paths in the Saw fiesta.

I’m trying to remember all the quests where you can end up in total darkness. Definitely with Krovos. Yakau if you fail. Maybe some routes in Radomil’s quest. Maybe there are routes on Sola’s quest. Did Oberod’s field test ever drop below dim light?

I highly recommend trying a blackmail run! Get a good media cabinet member and buff up your menace, and you can intimidate so many people into voting for you. (Will they try and assassinate you for this? I dunno, probably.  I have gotten an assassination on Compliant before, but never Social, so sneko should be able to help).

I've gotten personal quests from Grojdana and Lorkas (they've never once given me a 'sure i like you' skip... i thought we were buds in my previous runs, but knowing that they could do this makes me question that LOL). Grojdana wants you to play a military strategy game with a group of people - high military skills are enough to clear it, I think some good social skills can also get you through. Lorkas's quest is wrestling a Rakshar, but I haven't attempted it yet.

Definitely a good point about Robe of Ice and Starlight Needle's quest! I noted that there's a Grandmaster military check in the military branch, so I definitely plan to try and explore that.

Second win! this time I decided to challenge myself by avoiding as much as possible Interaction/Emotion. I ended up with 50 rhetoric for the turn 22 neutral space event, but that's that - all the other Interaction/Emotion where at 0.

This time I went for the Tharkkan group, picked Ozara, Rejt, Lorkas, and got my friends on board because any stat is better than no stat. Also got Sola's vote. I had to abandon Zolot, Milan and Ixil to Lukomir because I was snagging Mirelle and had the good fortune of meeting and persuading Yakau for the first time. I liked him! Then midgame I successfully did the turn 22 neutral space event, went to Mau for the easy friendly vote, got Vahter and Krovos on board (Vahter hit me with a personal quest for the first time), pushed to Draug, then I tried the Pontifex' personal quest for the first time (with only mixed results due to very middling Sports). Final push I went to the Heru group and stole a truly outrageous number of votes, including Grojdana by naming her Lord Chancellor. I did a try where on turn 20 (the same turn Lukomir got the votes of Branekka and Radomil) Zorana got engaged to Eve's son (fascinating! I'm very glad I went for it.), went to the end, then reloaded and tried to do the same without Eve's vote (turned out better because Zorana could get Rippling Thunder's deal), and easily got enough votes.

It feels like naming the correct ministers + being a generalist in stats pays off, I didn't specialize much (I think I had only the Spaceship group around Graduate level) and most of the quests where pretty doable. I regretted not having picked up enough Stealth for the Heru III quest, and sometimes I had to reload to study a non-optimal skill so I could do the day's quest, but on the whole it didn't feel difficult.

It did absolutely require the Science bonus, I don't know how I could have done without it.

Spoilery super quick doodle, because I can’t not make the joke while I’m thinking about what to investigate next

Glad I wasn't the only one who thought about this likeness!  I'm having trouble getting anywhere with the "main plot"/Zorana's origin secrets after a certain point. I would be thankful if you share any findings from your investigations! :D

Ah, I was thinking about what to investigate next because I was stuck. No major breakthroughs yet, sorry!

Mapping out the social graph doesn’t really show more than “experts aren’t well liked”, which makes sense as a tradeoff.

That's interesting! I'd like to investigate as well, but unfortunately I have to take a break from the game for now. I have some deadlines coming up :( I'll probably still check the forums during breaks.

I was thinking of making my own doodle crossing over Zorana with the OTHER unprepared-princess-gets-thrown-into-space-empress-election, if that's ok! I edited my post! Thanks for telling me!

I'm assuming that the political matters we're consulted on and get to make decisions about - like how the illegal clone children should be housed - impact our approval with certain electors. Or at least they're doing something - I don't think these events are just here for flavor text. I could be wrong, of course, this is just my gut instinct.

Has anybody been able to figure out specific impacts of these choices? Any interesting events that can come from them? I know the Grib colony has a whole chain of events that it can cause, for example.

Also, there are some characters who I have the option to propose an engagement to, but they always reject me (Stoyan, Rippling Eternity, Branekka, and Eve's daughter Star are the ones that come to mind). Is there anything I can do to make these engagements available? Or is the option just there for the realism of "sometimes you are going to get rejected, even if you're in line for the throne".

If you are able to see "under the hood", you will find that there are 10 different factions with approval ratings. Many of the choices (especially ones that appear to be flavor) influence these factions, and it seems that Electors belong to certain factions, and have their approval rating changed by your approval with their faction(s).

There are, of course, also choices that trigger new and interesting events, and many choices that are reflected in the endings.

For the first time, I attempted to negotiate with Chapadoc *after* having her background unlocked (max intrigue is a ton of fun), and I was able to unlock a new option for her quest. For anybody who hasn't already seen it: run, don't walk! It was an absolute delight. Plus, it's a way to get her vote that doesn't need you to invest in piloting and gunnery skills.

I just started playing around, but it seems like no matter what I do Khdarr is hostile to me and won't even meet me for a cabinet position - is there an early story choice I'm missing that affects her feelings?

Khdarr has always been slightly negative or worse for me. Often hostile, if I don’t do well countering her rudeness in our first meeting.

She does well with Bureaucracy and Economics, refused me in every run with an “affected by elector approval” for Law, and outright refuses every other position.

I don’t know what it takes to have her accept the Law role. Dialogue indicates there would be some very spicy consequences with her in the role. If anyone has managed to leave a good impression, I would love to know how. :(

(1 edit)

I finally got her to be on council, but I'm not spreadsheeting or writing down anything - I think maybe it had something to do with replying favorably to the moons of Svargas on Turn 17, but haven't checked intensively. That theoretically propels her from hostile to just negative, which allows me to at least meet with her to ask her to be on council.

Developer

Khdarr starts the game with one of the lowest approval ratings - not actually hostile but pretty bad, so it takes only a few choices she doesn't like to push her down into the level where she won't talk to you at all, and there's a lot of choices that can nudge her a little by the time you get to her.

I got the Election victory on my second playthrough, which suggests that it is a much easier game than LLTQ.

Whereas in the first run I tried to carefully manage relations, I disregarded them completely in the successful run. You are "hostile" towards me? Whatever, you still have a high Skill value, so welcome as my advisor! I also didn't try to find out the electors' allies and rivals. Maybe my advisors hate each other, I don't know, and it didn't seem to have an effect. Overall, I am not sure whether this is as it should be -- it feels strange that I can disregard this mechanic completely and still be successful.

My advisors were Grojdana as Chancellor, Ozara for Economics, Rejt for History, Stoyan for Science (all 75), Sola for Media (70) and Krovos for Spirituality (50), so with the Admiral and the Thresher taking care of Military and Intrigue, only Galactic Relations was lacking and I could focus on my other training. I found Rejt particularly useful for the lore.

I prioritized Interaction and Emotion, with a secondary focus on Spaceships and Big Guns, neglecting almost anything else. This also seems to be a good choice for RP as a successful imperial ruler.

Because I spent the first game on the right side of the map, I went to the lower left first, grabbed a few advisors and finished some easy quests, not bothering to level up for a more difficult one. When I came to Myrkka, almost everyone already pledged their votes for the other guy, so I added Krovos to the council (figured I wouldn't be able to get approval of the good guy) and finished on Heru.

I romanced Jade later on in the game. Was a bit unsure at first, but judging from the epilogue they seem to be a good couple.

My only regret is that I had Krovos on the council. In all other aspects, it was a good run, I think.

Developer

Basically when asked about it my expectations have been that getting through the Election would be easier than surviving LLTQ but solving the plot that gets revealed to you at that point is probably harder, especially without hints (as far as I know only one person has gotten there so far and I did drop a hint).

> You are "hostile" towards me? Whatever, you still have a high Skill value, so welcome as my advisor!

Actually hostile characters will refuse to speak to you at all so you can't take them on as advisors.

For my victorious run today (I had 3 losses prior to this one):
- Stayed put and studied Etiquette until completed student leven.
- Travelled to the planet with the most Electors and studied Empathy.
- Assessed who liked me and who didn't.
- Recruited skilled people as Chancellor and two other positions, reducing the pool of home candidates for any potential rivals.
- Recruited a good scientist for the Science role as soon as I stumbled upon them.
- Spent quite a lot of time in the bottom-right corner of the map and thus met lots of people.
- Tried to find out what people wanted and do my best to give it to them.
- Investigated people before deciding to negotiate, quest, marry or blackmail (once).
- In the third quarter of the game, got selective about whose quests to train for.
- Remember I have a rollback button in case of misclicks (sometimes I get overexcited if I think I see the perfect option, and then click on something that was on the way to that option).
- Worked on Etiquette and Empathy when I had nothing better to do.
- Took advice seriously.
- Denounced one person who already had a bunch of enemies.
- Realised I'd neglected a whole sector late on and got a marriage candidate from the area I'd neglected.

Things I did late on that would have helped me more had I done them earlier:
- Be more selective about Cabinet members not known to be near my rival.
- Made better use of denouncements and blackmail.
- Move on when I'd got nothing to do that was actually worth doing on a planet.
- Got some independent intrigue skill (I think a member of my Cabinet was trying to kill me at one point, and it limited my options).
- Got cannier about mood management.

Things that actively hampered me:
- Making promises without knowing how to keep them.
- Attempting to impress someone who was obviously always going to be disgusted with me given the configuration of my Cabinet at the time.

I got my first Electorate win but I think I got a bad ending overall?

I basically focused on my social stats (+arts) and gave out cabinet positions to lock down some friendly votes. As well as doing a few personal missions- I did 3 stone's murder mystery which was probably a waste of several days of stat building but it was fun.

I feel like I need to keep working through this game to have a better idea of who to put in which position.

(1 edit)

my first playthrough ended in a tie (and then death), i focused really hard on trying to do the personal quests of everyone i got one from, locked down a decent number of votes but then didnt have time to fly around and meet everyone by the end.

second run i think i locked down a couple votes through quests, filled my cabinet (with mostly unhelpful advisors, statwise), and otherwise just focused on flying around, meeting everyone once and trying to get them to like me in the first meeting. was baffled that that was enough. im gathering a lot of people will just vote for you if they like you, which is handy. my stats were all over the place, but i did focus on empathy early since not knowing how people felt about me seemed like a big detriment in the first run.

i did also propose marriage to someones son and then married my childhood friends instead without going back to him to finalize it. oops.

This was with Jaxor as an early fiancé - one of the only three I've had so far - and I'm liking Jaxor a lot (more than Fire, despite the fact that Fire has a portrait and Jaxor doesn't). Also it's really hard to not take Vasily as logothete of culture, with ulterior (having him as concubine) motives; the scene where he offers is lovely and so are the epilogues I've seen. I do want Zorana to have something nice.

Died to assassins my first several playthroughs, so this run I focused all on physical skills and combat to make sure that assassins couldn't actually kill me. Zorana never developed a shred of empathy (who cares about reading people when you can just have Sola conduct polls for you?) and was a novice at speaking and etiquette, but she impressed electors with her ability to win starfall matches, wrestle wild beasts, and survive death traps. Made it to the election for the first time, and won handily, 22 to 7. Never had to blackmail anybody, and I got to marry Kxenia for love. This game definitely scratched the LLTQ itch and I'm looking forward to exploring the world more and finding other paths through it.
