I did not expect something like this in a 4 day game jam! The song started soon getting on my nerves, but the art was great! Just be sure that the horizon line of the background roughly aligns with eyes of the characters or it wont work (like the background for the initial dialogue with mom, where it seems like you are looking down to floor, but the character is drawn like you are looking in front of you)

One thing I was thinking about. Wouldn't it be better to reset at the end of the day? Like you are trapped in a time loop like in Groundhogs day which resets in the evening back to the morning. And when you get everything right you will escape the time loop. It would allow player to gather clues throughout the day so he can better answer the questions. Resetting for each character is just guess work and a little bit tedious. It also promotes rushing through dialogues.

Thank you for your feedback!

I felt like it’d become tedious to have to redo all three character interactions at the end of each of them. You only need to get one question wrong in order to fail the character interaction, and the time frame of the GMTK wouldn’t have allowed me to write separate interactions for each hypothetical day. So even if you got one question wrong you’d have to go through all ten questions again and again until the day ended.

I also wanted to avoid the concept of a time loop because I knew it’d be heavily used with this theme, and narratively it would’ve been a lazy explanation. The loop of interactions is meant to just be a game mechanic rather than a plot point if that makes any sense. I originally wanted to incorporate some kind of dislike/like bar or heart system but ran out of time. The challenge is guessing and remembering the right answer based on what you think is more socially acceptable, but the options are meant to be vague so the right one isn’t completely obvious. That being said I didn’t really intend for the game to be difficult so it is meant to go by pretty fast, skipping the parts of dialogue you’ve already gone through to get to the stuff you haven’t was expected.

Nice Game idea love it!

Very creative idea! Love the art and backgrounds, incredible work in just 4 days! I did loop a bit much (I might have been a bit too honest at everyone when I first met them..) I liked it! Very nicely done.

Visually, I loved the backgrounds in this! Were they drawn or was it just a filter over photos, they looked very realistic but also very stylized :)

Developer(+1)

Thank you! All the backgrounds were photobashed with an added noise to give them an 80s film look. I would've liked to have hand drawn all the backgrounds unfortunately but I didn't have the time. I may update it with hand drawn backgrounds in the future!

Submitted

i hope you keep them the same or similar haha they're cool!

Not a huge fan of this genre, but the UI, and music were so well-made! Plus the artwork is really something!

Really charming concept with a strong 80s vibe! Impressive work for a first game, especially in just 4 days. Great job :)

Developer

Thank you so much! I actually made it in a little over two days because I had work but I learned a lot fast!

Normally not really into this kind of game, but enjoyed playing it nonetheless. Great game. Impressive that you managed to pull this off in the small timeframe we had

Didnt read the description and got stuck in the loop XD, Really liked the game

Todd the tugger huh...
Well I must say while I'm not usually a visual novel player this one was nice, I wish the game didn't force me to go down a specific route. Other then that the art assets look super nice, narrative is a little simple but pretty cool otherwise.

8.5/10 ^^

i absolutely love the humor in this  game!! really a big fan of the artwork as well <3 amazing work!!

this game so good in artwork and narrative wasn't bad for the jam, I like it.

Lovely game! The looping is a nice twist on the visual novel formula, and I especially enjoyed the cheeky narrator!

Submitted

The art and the narrative is so well done, I love the textures of the backgrounds! Hard to make something funny like that in just a couple days I think. I see where the looping happens, but if you're great at making friends like myself (brag), the game doesn't have a loop. Still, I like what you've done. Todd The Tugger Forever!

Thank you for your feedback!

I tried my best to make sure every player experienced at least one loop, but there is always the possibility of playing all the way through, guessing every right answer. If I had more time, I would have liked to have a workaround, but that kinda thing is inevitable with a visual novel format.

I would suggest players purposely get questions wrong if they want to experience every interaction!

Loved it! The narrator is hilarious and the art style is so clean. Great game!

Anachronistic journey into the nostalgic afterglow of a teen movie. The music made me laugh the most for its outward riffing on Tokimeki Memorial-style OSTs. I think the loop could have been integrated much better.

Developer(+1)

Any similarities to Tokimeki Memorial are purely coincidental. I've actually never heard of the franchise before your comment. But after listening to the soundtrack, I hear the similarities LMAO!

I originally had plans for the interactions to alter after restarting, but ultimately ran out of time! I wish I could've done something more intuitive. This was my first time ever making a game, so I didn't wanna make it too difficult before I learned the ropes.

Very impressive for a first time! I've tried implementing dialogue systems before and they can be a pain. Nothing broke in my playthrough, which even for this type of game isn't a given.

Developer

I'm glad to hear that! Hopefully, I'll be able to go back to this project in the future and rework it once I've improved my skills. But I'm just glad everything seems to work for now...

I have never had a Visual Novel make me laugh out loud before, but this one did!!!

I love the artwork in this game! Everything is so crisp and clean!

Can’t I just become friend with the narrator XD. The narrator seems so much nicer than the other people. Also apart from the “I think I’ll go outside now” it’s pretty relatable XD. It was fun playing this!

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

The narrator is already your friend; he tells you how it is. <3

Yeah, I figured a game where you want to stay inside on your computer for the summer would be relatable to Game Jammers. The irony is definitely not lost on me!
