How does your game fit the theme?
You are forced by DEATH itself to search for answers in a LOOP of your Memories and Regrets... Your TIME to find answers is LIMITED so you are forced to loop between past and present to find the answer.

If I got a nickel for each time a game required you to answer questions I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happend twice.
How. The Heck. Is this a JAM GAME?! Genuinely an amazing experience. I love the way the narrative is told through text that exists in the scene (though it can make it a bit difficult to read in more cramped spaces), and I was engaged throughout. I've never played Obra-Din, so I'm not sure if this is common to these types of games or not, but I also really enjoyed exploring the memory by interacting with different clues to find more information. Plus the artstyle, the creepy audio track in the background... Unbelievable job on this one!!
Ah, so happy to hear! It's incredibly heartwarming to see people enjoy the story that we told here. Answering the "How the heck?" - Experience + passion. Regarding in-world text, it is not a new idea, but it isn't a common thing either; I personally only remember such a trick in "What Remains of Edith Finch". For this game, it was indeed a perfect storytelling tool: easy to make, stylish, and powerful.
I'm currently developing a detective game myself outside the bounds of this jam, and this game is genuinely an invaluable resource for inspiration in thinking about the genre and the ways for players to do complex deduction. This is a fantastic jam entry, I was very immersed for my entire playtime, amazing job!
Thanks! Hope whatever you are making turns out great! Our game is basically Obra-Din with time pressure, in terms of deduction, it works very similarly, but then you can "cash in" some extra knowledge that you gathered that doesn't add to the main puzzle in return for extra time. Normally in detective games, you only have the final puzzle and whatever doesn't fit into it remains just narrative noise, so I figured why not to use this extra info as a resource that you can exchange for something valuable...
I think this is the best atmosphere I've seen in a gamejam ever. Stellar job !
Yoooo, thanks! With some amazing jam games out there, this review really means a lot!
What a fantastic story and artstyle you have ! Did you made all the assets yourself ?! That pixelated texture look neat, I wonder how it was done
Hey thanks, glad you enjoyed it! Yes, we made all of the assets ourselves except for the base character model and a car model. We got a very good artist who has many years of experience, so he did all of those amazing environments. I'll poke him if he feels like sharing his process.
I really impressed. It's a big shame ending is unreachable because of bug. I also am amazed with weight optimisation. How is it even possible? One of scenes even contains big ass city and you telling me it all can be compressed to 40 megs archive?
Also just found out button "Remove tape" becomes active again and it resets the timer
Thanks! Yeah, we knew from the start that with just 3 people this concept would be on the very edge of what's possible in 4 days, so we didn't get enough time to patch everything. but the only other option we had was to settle for something less cool and we don't do that here haha.
Regarding 40 mb - we were surprised ourselves lol
Patch 2.0 with fixes was released, so the ending is now reachable.
THAT IS AMAZING! I dont have any other words. Just amazing. Great job!!!! It feels like an finished exirience. The concept is nice (we have a similar one for our game, but we didn't finish it, so yeah xD). Art is just amazing. I just love this game! Thank you for giving me such a good time while playing it.
Responses like this are what keep me motivated to make games tbh! Really happy to hear!
What a game! I love the mechanics and the concept, could have kept playing way longer. Would be so nice as a full game following different peoples life memories. How did you do all this in 4 days? I am very impressed. Great work!
Hahaha, thank you very much!
Yeah, honestly, we ourselves didn't fully believe it was possible so you can call it a gamble. The narrative and atmosphere of Rendezvous With Death were I believe the most important aspects that we focused on, but of course we were low on time and wished we had at least 1 more day.
We are already working on a post-jam patch and might as well see how well it will be received by people, so a full game MIGHT come out one day.
In terms of how, I think, magic + luck + dedication + just 3 people and a cat, luckily all of us were of different roles (art, design, code) :)
Again, very impressive! (I agree, cat helps a lot :))
I look forward to the post jam patch !
The cat was responsible for QA and since there are some annoying bugs I'm afraid we will have to fire him...
Patch 2.0 with fixes was released.
I love the graphics!
I see where the story goes and I like the writing. For me its very reminiscent of Kentucky Route Zero and 1000xResist. I really liked where the story goes and didn't mind getting stuck sometime on geometry and falling through the ground after i clicked the cardboard.
Very glad to hear!
Really awesome game! As soon as I saw the timer I was instantly hooked! I hurriedly grabbed a pen and paper and started writing down a ton of notes to try and figure everything out. Unfortunately, I kept falling through the floor when I clicked the "Box" in the hallway, so I couldn't finish the game. But I would love to play this again if it gets patched!
So glad you liked it! I wish we had a few more hours to properly test everything, but we were crunching like crazy before the deadline. If you just avoid this broken box you should still be able to experience all of the content as to every scene, there are multiple entrances that you can take. (Box leads you to the same scene as bike or car objects). We are going to release a patched version once the jam rating is over so all those issues will be fixed.
Patch 2.0 with fixes was released, so the ending is now reachable.
Seriously breathtaking!
Happy to hear that you enjoyed playing Rendezvous With Death! 😊
Interesting story with nice visual style and design. But every time I tried to finish it I encoutered some bug, which was frustrating. I would love to get back to it after some fixes.
Glad you enjoyed it! Is it the bug where the question disappears from the wall, and you get locked in the final area?
Well, I fell under the map after pressing the box, couldn't do it without falling, and like 4 times I got this bug where your screen goes black a few seconds after loading into a new area, I figured that everything works there, because you can interact with things (if you manage to finde them with no vision), but the black screen effect stays on in the consecutive areas too (I believe it's the same effect you use for swithcing areas).
The box you can just avoid, the second one sounds nasty. We will look into it.
Patch 2.0 with fixes was released, so the ending is now reachable.
Wow! A brillianly creative idea! I'm a complete sucker for these types of games. Obra Dinn with its own unique twist. Would totally buy something like this if it was longer! Not 100% sure about the time limit though as this is a game I like to take my time in. Also, the pistol shot sound effect was so loud my soul left my body. Overall, 5/5 though <3 Need more types of these kinds of games.
Haha yeah, we internally referred to it as an "Obra-Din-like" genre. Glad you had fun with it!
Yeah but more with a more emotionally-centric type of storytelling. I love the idea of objects containing "memories" as they do spectate and kind of absorb our most emotionally vulnerable moments without us even knowing. Big possibilities with this kind of idea. Would love for you to develop it further
I really liked the art direction, and the game is interesting, one thing tho, I fell out of the map in the apartment area
Glad you enjoyed the story!
