Love the artstyle and gameplay loop, the narrative as well is hilarious, Lonk needs to keep himself away from the poker table! Very satisfying to play, really well done!
This is the 65th game that I've reviewed this jam.
So, believe me when I say that I have seen a lot of puzzle+platform+clone mechanic.
HOWEVER, I think this is my favourite.
:)
Key novel points about this game that I like:
1) being able to choose when recording starts and stops;
2) being able to summon/dismiss the clone at will; and
3) turn-based movement (surprisingly an amazing addition to this mechanic cocktail!).
You also did a really good job with the "clone can be stepped on" and "clone can go through spikes" tutorials.
I saw another game that had the same rules; but it wasn't clear that was how it worked.
Having transparent clones makes it ambiguous about what they physically can/cannot interact it; and you handled that potential confusion very well.
Also, I know you have a list of known bugs; but I didn't run into any on my run.
So, as far as I'm concerned, the game has no bugs!
:P
You also did a great job sucking me into the puzzles.
They all looked so tantalisingly achievable and fun that I couldn't put the game down; and the difficulty was perfect.
This is the only puzzle game that I've actually finished in the jam.
Are you planning to add more levels after the jam?
(Oh, also, while I feel bad for the cat, your story was funny and novel too - who else in the jam has a cat with a crippling gambling problem?)
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it enough to complete it 😁
Regarding points 1 and 2, I initially thought of having to kill the player to start the copy, but I didn’t like the idea of having to wait around for it to do something. Having it on demand wherever/whenever you want in the level seemed more intuitive. I’m happy to hear it worked out!
And I didn’t get a chance to get anyone to try it before submitting, so I’m glad to hear I did a good job with teaching the mechanics through the puzzles.
Unfortunately after the jam, I plan to get back to my long term project. I’ll just be doing some minor bug fixes post rating period
Thanks so much for your feedback, the detail you went into was very much appreciated 😁
Awesome! Even if it gets usurped by something else I’m glad to hear this is one of your favorites 😁
My long term project is just going to be a run based platformer shooter where you fight waves of enemies. Sort of like Exit the Gungeon. I wouldn’t really call it a roguelike, but it’s something like. It’s Christmas themed so the deadline is kind of tight since it’s just a few months away and there is a lot of work left 😅
Wow, what a puzzle game and what a fun take on the theme! Recording moves to be used by a phantom later is such a fun challenge, especially with the great levels you designed that really had me scratching my head to find a solution. It’s amazing how you made this solo!
Btw, a tile-based platformer where jumping is also a discrete movement is something I hadn’t seen before, so very cool! All surrounded by cute graphics, pleasant music and a cat crushed by gambling debt: simply perfect, no notes :)
Thanks, happy to hear you enjoyed it!
I haven’t seen the same jump movement in a grid based game either, but it was kind of inspired by the levels in Baba is You that had the Fall mechanic since it turns it into something kind of like a platformer. I can’t remember if any of those levels had something like a jump 🤔
Great game! I really like your twist on the player copy idea. I think you nailed the turn-based movement, especially the way you did the jump. The puzzle difficulty was well balanced, some puzzles took me a while to get the hang of, but I liked that. Great artwork and sound too! Awesome job!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it 😁 Unfortunately I didn’t have time to fix the physics 😅 The jank is mostly due to how I do one action at a time, have everything react to it, and then move on to the next action. There isn’t any simultaneous movement. It gets messy when multiple things are happening at once like the player and the copy both trying to move, or pressing a button
Pretty unique game concept and the visuals are so polished for a short jam! I suck at puzzle games but I was able to understand this game's mechanic pretty fast, super cool but the flip bridge is evil!
It took me a bit to figure out the mechanics, but when i did I really enjoyed the game. The puzzles are challenging, the visuals are nice and simple and the audio works well. God job!
Nice take on the "saving your inputs to use later"! I like that the clone doesn't just loop your positions and that's it, it genuinely loops your inputs which is fun! The fact that you can push it too is pretty nice to offset your moves! It does get tricky after a few puzzles, but it never feels unfair, partly because of the undo button, and also because it's easy to tell what you did wrong.
Really love the simple pixel style, it conveys just the information you need and it's pretty pleasing on the eyes! The SFX is fun (can't never get enough of these meows), and it has all the little sounds you'd need. The music is alright, but the loop feels a bit too short, and it gets repetitive after a bit, but it's honestly my only issue.
Glad to hear you enjoyed it! I actually didn't realize the loop was so short until you brought it up 😅
While looking for music, I thought it fit pretty well and only listened to it for a bit before getting back to work. I didn't hear it much after since I was listening to other music while working. I was in such a rush I didn't realize the track was only a minute long and looped half way through 😱
Good work on your submission!
I liked the setup level at the start, a nice level to get used to the controls and setup some story.
The peaceful music stopped me rage quitting on some of the harder levels lol.
I think it would be nice to be able to see what your clone's next action is going to be. (especially for the bridge level although it was very satisfying when I got it.)
A really good puzzle game. Well Done!
Dude, excellent game you have here! It's really challenging. Level 4 took me several minutes to figure out how to clear. But I managed, now I'm on level 5 and I'm really enjoying the experience, real good job with the puzzles, and really creative mechanic with the copy cat, congrats!
Cute cat with debt, interesting puzzles! Meow more pixel art cats please
