The rewinding is an interesting mechanic, and I like the twist of a changing environment/gravity within a single level.

The puzzle design didn't really work for me though. I finished most levels by just doing the one thing possible, and rarely hit a moment were I really needed to "solve" a level. I really liked the one where you had to place a clone that's pushed through three doors that you then open one by one, because it wasn't just about placing a clone on the next available button.

I think the game also needs a way of showing how the buttons are connected. Without that, it's even harder to plan/solve a level, and even more a case of randomly trying things. I had to stop on a level where I had 4 clones and 7 buttons and couldn't figure out which ones to press. A related issue is the camera, I think seeing the whole level at once would really help so you can plan your moves.

The controls feel a bit robotic because of the instant movement and the jumps are a little floaty, but overall I think it is fine.

I like the art style and sounds, and the rewinding animation is great.

I also like how you integrated the tutorial into the game.

I think the UI should show the current gravity in addition to the next one just for clarity.

Developer

Hey, thank you for your detailed feedback!

I recently watched some videos on level/puzzle design (e.g. GDC talks), and I think I have a better understanding on that now. We didn't have any experience on that when we made the game, so we basically just started building some levels right away without much planning. 😅

We will update the game some time after the jam is over, and rework the current levels to incorporate all of the feedback we got as much as possible, and likely even add new mechanics and levels after that.

I will definitely work on the UI as well, since it appears that many people didn't really understand what exactly it shows and how important it is (that's why we also added that to our itch-page's description for now).

Thanks again, the amount of high-quality feedback we already got is amazing, and I'm glad you liked some parts of our game! 😀

Great to hear that you are committed to learning and improving the game!

I know it's hard to design good puzzles, especially in a short amount of time. Understanding how a player will approach a level, providing enough options in a level so they don't just stumble into the solution, but also not overwhelming them, while knowing the solution yourself, is really difficult. I think playtesting (by other people, not just yourself) is also even more important than with other genres.

By the way, we made something similar but not (intended) as a puzzle game. We would also love some more feedback, so feel free to check it out :)

I loved this one!

a fun puzzle platformer! i enjoyed it more than I thought i would, very charming! good work!

Developer

Thanks again for the feedback!
Glad you enjoyed it :)

I've seen a lot a games with the core mechanic of rewinding, but this one had a very unique submechanic of changing your environment each time you cloned yourself. it created a really fun and unique puzzle experience that scratched my brain. just one small bug with a puzzle and the audio was a bit sharp with all the sawtooth/hard 16 bit synths sounds. but the game plays super well and was really enjoyable! great job :)

Developer

Thanks again for playing!

Very nice~

Really cool and smart puzzles, had my head scratching a few times! Really well done for a first time game :)

Developer

Thanks! We had a lot of fun making it :)

Wow!!

I've seen this concept of creating clones of your previous runs and using that to aid you in the future replicated several times across the 'loop' theme, but you excecuted in one of the best ways I've seen!

Your level design is perfect, doing everything a level should: introducing the player to new mechanics and variables with a slowly increasing difficulty curve. There are so many details that bring this game to life, to name a few: the rewinding before you respawn, the unique art style, the new mechanics introduced every level that keep the game interesting, and so much more. It is clear a lot of time and effort was put into the game.

You've managed to add a lot of content as well, adding even further to the impressive factor. The menus are intuitive, the tutorial logical and extremely helpful, and lots of different levels to play.

One quick suggestion: maybe make the jumping more realistic? It is more of a long, slow glide here.

That's all I have to say! I am quite impressed and applaud the spectacular effort 😄

Developer

Thanks for the detailed review!

I'll see what I can do about the jump without having to remake all the existing levels too much. Probably, it can be improved quite a bit by just playing around with different values like gravity and jump velocity.
Also, do you thing the "the longer you press the button, the higher you jump" mechanic would make sense here?

Submitted

I don't think it would be worth it to completely rework all the levels just to adjust the jumping. It is a very small issue compared to the overwhelmingly positive parts of the game!

The rewinding after you create a clone adds so much!

Developer(+1)

Just a fun little gimmick that we implemented on the first day, before we even knew what exactly we wanted to make ;)

Thanks for the comment!

Very fun to play. The levels are well designed. I like the shift patterns that make each clone different.

Developer

Thanks :)

I like the game. The levels are well designed if the replay can be part of the game, too! Or maybe  I didn't figure that out.

Cute!! And fun to play!!

Really fun and creative game.

Submitted(+2)

wow that was a really fun game. It's impressive how much you guys managed to do in therms of level design with only a few mechanics. I really had to think on some of them. Well done!

Submitted(+2)

What I liked most was the cute graphics!

Developer(+1)

Thanks, yours looks good as well!

I like the concept, and the levels are designed well. the rewind is a very cool concept!

Developer

Thanks!

I like the idea and the fact that you can see the player's previous steps when you rewind. I am a bit confused on how the shifts work.

Developer(+1)

Hi, thanks for your feedback!

In each level, there is a fixed pattern of some of the following physics shifts:

  • upside down: gravity and player are vertically flipped
  • half gravity: player can jump twice as high and falls down twice as slow
  • upside down + half gravity: combination of the other two
  • normal: no changes in physics

You always see what the next shift will be, and incorporate that into you decision on then and where to place a clone.

Hope that helps 😀

Submitted

I noticed and I really liked this idea, it adds variety to the gameplay

Submitted

Thank you for the clarification. I thought it was a fixed shift for each level which is why I got confused. I definitely think you should add a way to see the next shift or make it more clear that the shifts rotate each rewind.

Developer

Well, you do see what the next shift is in the top left of the screen. But maybe we could change the text in the level where shifts are introduced for the first time to make it a bit more clear.

Nice puzzle game ! The only thing that bothered me a bit was the fact that you didn't know the list of all the loop effect of a level when starting it, but at the same time it makes the player try to advance in the level and adapt as they learn what are the possible effects, so it was still enjoyable to go through each one !

Developer

Hey, do you mean something like a short popup that comes up when you select a level from the level selector before it begins?

We didn't really think that was necessary, since the current levels never have a pattern of more than three shifts at once (so the player can discover the pattern really quickly anyway), but we should definitely think about that in case we add more complex levels and shifts after the jam.

Thanks for your valuable feedback!

Submitted(+1)

I was thinking like having the list line by line instead of having only the next one (maybe a small ui pop up, with a srollbar). But yea as you said, with few loops it's not that much bothering

You're welcome ! Good luck if you continue with this game ^^

This was really fun ! I love the character's face - the music also works really well, so great choice !

I was so focused on the mechanic I tended to forget I could jump (which forced me to replay levels to get better scores, so I think this is actually a very nice consequence - intended or not :))

Developer

Thanks, we are glad you had fun with our little game! :)

Submitted(+1)

Really like what you did with this mechanic, very cool!!

Submitted(+2)

Really cool puzzles! This game has a lot of potential, so you should keep working on it!
