Clever! And the snake is super cute. I’d totally pay for the mobile version.

Are we supposed to be able to eat our tail before getting all the fruit? I imagine that just wasn’t important enough to worry about during the jam 😄

Here's a video of my playthrough, which contains my feedback. I play your game at 1:38:20

Developer (2 edits) (+1)

ooh nice! heres my thoughts as i (Nettakrim) am watching lol:

the movement is indeed really smooth! the sprites took ages for Walex to do lol

1:42:40 the gotcha is that if you turn right instead of left you get stuck, but you turned left so,,

we had a mneumonic that “you can only eat (your tail) if youre ate (tiles long)”

color coded buttons is a good idea, it doesnt account for one button doing multiple doors, and one only doing one of those doors, although im not sure if we actually do that anywhere

ahaha you cheesed both the levels with cheese, yeah thats supposed to get you to split yourself, but theres too much fruit outside the room you can only access at length 2

there are not any snakes that eat plants in general, let alone fruit, thats actually really funny

the green things are supposed to be always solid, where they arent is an oversight lol (aside from the maze, which i personally dislike as a level but Walex insisted)

we really shouldve done a proper tutorial making it clear you had to face the end of your tail,,, thats by far the mechanic that follows the least logically

some of the puzzles are decently obvious yeah, often because they want to teach you a mechanic, but maybe we did that too much

1:55:30 that was recoverable if you just undid to when you pushed the pear box down with your tongue, as you eventually figured out. we shouldve started the snake facing left

sound effects wouldve been nice, i even copied over my sound manager system from previous games so it wouldve been easy. if we remembered it was a voting category we definitely wouldve done them

the level editor was useful as it meant Walex could make puzzles while i was implementing sokoban boxes, but yeah, broadly not worth it, it is slightly janky for that reason

ahaha yeah the block sliding puzzle in the middle of snakeoban is funny. i wonder if every pattern is possible? it definately seems like you cant softlo- oh yeah thats the bug it tells you about

yeah a pit animation wouldve also been good, that was on the list, alas, time

nice! you didnt accidentally discover box breaking in the second box level like a friend i watched play! the reveal worked! i could definitely see someone getting stuck on that, but i think it being literally the only thing you can do helps. and trusting the player to figure it out means they feel smart. (perhaps having a level based around holding a door open with your head before that wouldve been good, just to prime the idea of leaving things in doors and closing them)

yeah the penultimate one is decently easy, it shouldve had an extra step, that is a complaint that atleast one other person has had

there is one more secret bonus level which is winning in the menu after eating the logo :P

yeah there is definitely potential with the mechanics (level editor moment, it base64 encodes them and puts them on your clipboard :3), most of the mechanics only have a few levels focusing on them (and there are a lot of levels! so i guess that itself shows theres potential lol)

and thanks for playing and videoing etc!

Cool to hear a bit of the behind-the-scenes. And once again, great work on this game. I had a lot of fun playing it.

Interesting puzzle with cool mechanics and smart level design. Polished art style. Surprised by the use of teleporting tunnels. Enjoy playing it so much.
Better to be able to tell if there is a button under a box and set that the snake can form a loop if there is a tail right in front of its head.

Developer

the tail needing to be lined up definitely hurts learnability given the lack of a tutorial

the main reason we did it that way was to make it easier to prevent the player from winning in unintended locations, as well as increasing the minimum length the snake needs to be to win

Submitted

Oh, I miss the second point. You are right. But my first point still holds.

Developer

yeah even just for that level with all the boxes lol

Submitted

Interesting puzzle design. Loved the idea for the level select!! Also great art!!

Submitted

I love it! great puzzles you have here. played a lot through it. :))

Submitted

Nice work! We definitely shared some similar ideas here. Love the art and the little decorations over the levels.

Developer

yeah, your poop mechanic is very interesting

if it happened on a different type of fruit then youd also be able to mix the mechanics which could be cool? (not sure how you could make the hunger one implicit, perhaps a floor tile that hurts you and its health?? idk)

Took me a little bit to figure out how to actually eat my tail (didn't know I needed to use my tongue in a particular direction), but after that I really liked the levels! Also I dig the main menu thing ;)

Very fun game, most of the puzzles are well designed, i like the inspiration taken from A Can of Wormholes (assuming  its intentionally similar), and the sprites are cute. There were a few puzzles i didn't like and i think the game could use a tutorial but overall its a pretty good game.

Developer (1 edit)

i did have some passive can of wormhole inspiration from watching a playthrough of it some time ago, which shows with the snake cutting (and less directly the box opening)

which ones? out of curiosity. the maze one i (nettakrim) did want to not have but walex insisted lol. there are also like 2 that are cheesable

it definitely could use a tutorial yeah, at the very least to make the win condition clear lol

Submitted

yeah the maze one was definitely the worst level and i think level P and level J were the ones that i didnt like if i recall correctly but i may be wrong

Submitted

just double-checked, yea those are the levels i didn't like (though J is the aforementioned maze level)

Level P just kinda didnt offer much in terms of puzzle - the solution is obvious from the start its just kinda wastes time i feel like

Developer

the end state is clear on that one yeah, there should probably be an extra step somewhere

Developer

J is the maze one yeah, P is the one with 4 boxes that you need to push (some with your tongue) into the doorways

Submitted

This was really fun, we both used a very different approach on the same concept

Submitted

Super cute art and I like the in-game menu you got. Good variety of puzzles and mechanics, too. Another great ouroboros-take :)

Submitted

Great game with ouroboros like mechanics (gods i love ouroboros), however i couldn't comprehend the controls and what to really do without the description (licking your tail, but in a certain angle is kinda not intuitive lol)

Great job overall

Developer

yeah the win condition is hard to figure out, we did want to have text for controls etc but ran out of time

Submitted

i understand completely and when you got the hang of it, its really good

Submitted

10/10 really cool game

Submitted

Great puzzles and mechanics. This has lots of potential

A snake-type puzzle game is so clever!

Submitted

fun twist!

Not what I expected form a snake game. But I was happily surprised. I like the art and theming. Also the concept was interesting. I think your game would really benefit if it would just go from one level to the next (I think I struggled with the level select the most of all your levels haha). That way you can also introduce new systems easily to players gradually.

Submitted

This is such a cool concept that I wish I had thought of, it took me a while to figure out that you could use your toung to grab fruit across the level (but I probably didnt read the description properly haha).

Nicely done! Sadly I didn't hear any sounds and I have one more question: how to move between levels - is it automatic or by pressing ESC?

Developer (2 edits)

yeah we sadly didnt have time for sounds

once you win a level it kicks you back to the menu after a few seconds, but yeah you can always do ESC
